As part of the project, which was organized by Health teacher Anthony Tussie, students pledged to take a stand against bullying by signing their names on paper cutouts of their hands. Greeting Veterans In recognition of Veterans Day, students at Robbins Lane Elementary School, in the Syosset School District, welcomed a platoon of Armed Force veterans from all four branches of the military, representing nearly every major American conflict. Music students in Catherine Da Silva’s class sat at the music podium and asked questions of
the veterans who are members of the American Legion Post 175 and the VFW Post 6394 in Syosset. The guests ranged from Vietnam and Korean War veterans to 93-year-old WWII Navy veteran Gus Scutari, who shared his experiences enlisting, coming home after the victory and dancing to Benny Goodman. After the veterans

answered questions such as, “what did you eat in the war,” and “did you make a lot of friends in the military,” the students sang “The Fifty Nifty United States” to their guests as Da Silva accompanied them on piano. The students also thanked them for their service with decorated thank-you cards for the veterans to take home.

Big data is out there, but the way that school districts access it is changing. The Nassau BOCES Instructional Data Warehouse (IDW) team has improved navigation, designed dashboards and created new reports. One of the new features for school districts is that they can use a variety of browsers, such as Explorer, Google and Firefox, to access data. The portal page features icons that are links to various features of the IDW including five reports common to everyone in New York state. “You have the flexibility to interact with the dashboards and look at the data the way you want,” said Nassau BOCES Data Analyst Jeff Davis at a presentation to school administrators. “A dashboard will allow users to see data quickly and graphically.” “The IDW is in the

Back In Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to
observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather
than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach. So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment. And as you embark on your shopping journey, be it Friday, Saturday, Monday, Christmas Eve or any time in between, take that same sentiment with you. Happy Shopping!

Syosset’s Village Elementary School showed off its Halloween spirit this year with two “spooktacular” events. For the annual Halloween Party, students present and past, along with their families, and even some staff members came bedecked in their best costumes. They danced to the music of Hart to Hart Entertainment, feasted on delectable desserts, enjoyed several different
craft stations, and played plenty of Halloweenthemed games, including “guess the weight of the giant pumpkin.” Prizes were awarded to the attendees with the best costumes. Many thanks to committee chairpersons, Stacy Paxinos, Laurey Shane, and Cathy Singer, for putting together such a fun event. On the afternoon of October 31st, the rain held off long enough for
Village’s youngest students to strut their stuff around the outside of the school in their finest costumes. From princesses and pirates to witches and wizards, students in kindergarten, first, and second grades were cheered on by their friends in the upper grades and the many parents in attendance. It was a fun way to end the school day on Halloween!

A Genius Bar officially opened its doors on November 17th at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District. The student-run ‘bar’
In addition to contributing to a Thanksgiving food drive, children and teachers at Dutch Lane Elementary School in the Hicksville School District constructed scarecrows as part of its first-annual Scare Away Hunger project.

On November 15th, twenty-two teams — including two pre-rookie teams — took part in the 3rd Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills High School West. The event was presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and the Half Hollow Hills School District. High school students used the same robots they built for the 2014 Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The robots battled on a 27-by-54foot playing field with a
truss suspended just over five feet above the floor, attempting to earn points by trying to shoot as many balls as possible into goals during a two-and-a-halfminute match. The winning alliance comprised of Malverne High School FIRST Team #884 “Mechanical Mules”; Patchogue-Medford High School FIRST Team #329 “Raiders”; and Huntington High School FIRST Team #5016 “Huntington Robotics.” The finalists were Hicksville High School FIRST Team #1468 “J-Birds”; Center Moriches High School FIRST Team #4458 “Infernobotix”; and Bay Shore High
School FIRST Team #271 “Mechanical Marauders.” The purpose of this postseason event was to show visiting schools, teachers, and administrators how students are garnering an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and why robotics programs are vital to their schools’ curriculum.
