Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s 2020-21 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program and House League has begun at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is one of the best games in town, and features many respected coaches dedicated to teaching this outstanding sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in the program,” said Councilman Hand. “As a hockey enthusiast myself, I am proud to announce that the children who attend the program get the unique opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality.” Boys and girls, ages 6 – 16, interested in registering for the Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. Check, money order, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted. All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. Registration fees are $150 for ten weekly sessions. All participants must provide their own equipment. Games will be played at all three Town rinks, with game schedules being distributed after team assignment by the designated coach. North Shore Rapid COVID-19 Testing Facility Moves to a New Location
In an effort to increase efficiency and ease of access of COVID-19 testing, Nassau County in partnership with Northwell Health has moved the North Shore drive-thru COVID-19 rapid testing facility to 600 Community Drive in Manhasset. The drive-thru rapid
testing site will be open from 10 am to 3pm Monday through Friday. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-833-4CARENY (1-833422-7369). This COVID-19 testing is provided free regardless of insurance or immigration status. Testing will be open to

Preservation Long Island Announces Call for 2021 Endangered Historic Places Nominations
Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable long-term stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.

Photo by Dylan Wallace ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Significance: A nominated site must be historically, culturally, or architecturally significant and may encompass individual buildings, landscapes, structures, or any grouping thereof. However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity. Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.
Nomination materials should be submitted online via our website at preservationlongisland.org. Nominations submitted after Friday, December 18, 2020, will not be accepted. Town Kicks Off Massive Toys for Tots Collection Drive Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand have announced a massive, month long collection drive to help benefit needy families and less fortunate children throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the Town of Oyster Bay will host a first-of-itskind ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 5th from 9am to 2pm (rain date for the event is Sunday, December 6th). In addition to the cruise thru holiday toy drive, collection boxes will also be located at multiple locations throughout the Town, ending December 14th. These unprecedented efforts will help collect new, unwrapped toys that will be used as gifts for needy children throughout the community. Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster
Bay, as just last year we smashed the previous year’s record in our toy drive collection. This year’s drive is especially crucial, as due to the coronavirus global pandemic, many more families than normal are feeling an undue financial burden. I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.” The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature an appearance by Santa Claus, and a drop box where kids can drop their letters to Santa off at. Letters dropped off with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. “Toys for Tots sends a message of hope to less fortunate children who otherwise wouldn’t be receiving presents this
holiday season. I urge residents, who can, to donate new un-wrapped toys to any of our dropoff locations,” said Councilman Tom Hand. “By making a donation, you can help ease the financial burden of families hardest hit by the effects of the coronavirus this holiday season,” Councilman Hand said. To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier remind residents that a Blood Collection Drive will take place on Monday, December 7th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important
during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. During this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.” The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by
appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. What is
While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created
by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving
Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. While we still do not know the long-term effects, there are reports of lingering symptoms that are plaguing these COVID-19 survivors and causing more stress in their lives. I want all COVID survivors to know, whether you are dealing with physical or emotional complications from your battle with this unprecedented illness, you are not alone and there is help available. Thank you Emerge for starting this support group for Nassau’s survivors to start a dialogue with others that know what they are going through and to get solutions from professionals,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. While the long-term effects of COVID-19 are not yet known, the bi-weekly COVID-19 support group provides survivors with an avenue to start a dialogue with other survivors and professionals about the lingering health effects and mental health issues they have experienced
since being diagnosed with COVID-19. Curran joined with the founder of the support group, Emerge, operated by Paragon Management in Glen Cove, to give more details on their mission, how to participate and to hear virtual testimonials from several participants. Emerge saw the need in June to address the lingering emotional and psychological health issues experienced by people who survived the coronavirus. They started bi-monthly, free virtual supports groups, available to anyone, regardless of where they lived. The support group sessions take place as Zoom meetings and are led by professionals on staff at the Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Centers, including a psychologist, and Lisa Penziner RN the special projects manager. “As we see more people who have recovered from the coronavirus, we know that many of them continue to have lingering health issues and in some cases, they show signs of post-traumatic stress syndrome,” said Ms. Penziner. “I’d like to thank the County Executive for her support in getting the word out about the help that is available for COVID-19 survivors. It’s so important that as many people as possible know about this free support group. A support
group provides people with an opportunity to be with others who are likely to understand what they are going through. This can reduce feelings of loneliness, distress, depression, anxiety and fatigue. “ Over the past six months the support group has been virtually attended by people not only living on Long Island, but also from other states. The next Post COVID-19 Support Groups will take place on: Wednesday, December 2, December 9 and December 30. Giving Back in a Tasteful Way H.B. Mattlin Middle School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District will host its first ever virtual food drive. Mattlin students are creating hunger awareness posters, flyers, and videos promoting the drive. This community service activity will start on December 1, 2020 and run until December 23, 2020. The food drive is in partnership with The Rudman Family Food Pantry, an organization the District has worked with in past years for the semiannual 7th grade trips to the food pantry. “I’m thrilled that we can provide our students with a way to give back to the community in a safe way,” said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage
Central School District. “Our students always enjoy giving back to the community, and it’s wonderful to see that our teachers were able to think of an alternative and creative way to have our students continue that tradition.” “The students will create their own flyers and post them on social media giving the students a chance to be leaders and advocates for change in their communities,” said Susan Epstein, family and consumer science teacher at Mattlin Middle School and organizer of the virtual drive. This initiative will inspire and educate students on the local issue of hunger on Long Island. Students are encouraged to use social media as a tool to promote the innovative virtual food

Fall has traditionally been a great time of year to hit the open road. Fall foliage annually provides an idyllic backdrop for fall road trips, but 2020 is a year unlike any other, and veteran road trippers may wonder if it’s wise, or even legal, to take to the open road this fall. The COVID-19 virus has forced local governments to implement various changes aimed at preventing the spread of the potentially deadly virus. While interstate travel during the outbreak is different, it’s not illegal. However, many states put specific policies in place that mandated out-of-state visitors self-quarantine for a certain period time, most often 14 days. Such measures compelled many would-be travelers to remain within the borders of their home states. Traveling need not be a relic of the past because of a pandemic. In fact, travel enthusiasts can hit the open road this fall with their peace of mind intact, especially if they follow a few safety precautions
while heading off for parts unknown. · Determine how far you really need to go. Restrictions have been lifted in many areas, but it’s still most convenient for drivers to stay somewhat close to home, ideally within their own states. That makes it easy for them to buy food, gas, use a restroom, or visit a park or monument without violating the spirit of quarantine mandates. A trip need not cross borders to be fun. · Plan for fewer pitstops. The fewer stops drivers make on their trips, the lower their risk of being exposed to the COVID-19 virus. In lieu of dining out during your trip, pack your lunch at home and take it with you. In addition, fill up your car before embarking on your trip so you don’t have to visit the filling station while on the road. Bring enough water and snacks so you can stay hydrated and don’t become hungry while out and about. · Get a tuneup before your trip. No one wants
to confront car trouble during a road trip, and that’s especially so when traveling during a pandemic. A breakdown during a pandemic may force drivers to visit roadside body shops or arrange for tow trucks, potentially putting them at greater risk of getting COVID-19. Drivers should take their cars in for a tuneup before taking a road trip to lower that risk. · Avoid densely populated areas if you intend to get out of your vehicle. If you intend to get out of your vehicle during a road trip, avoid visiting areas that tend to draw large crowds. Popular lookout points may provide some beautiful fall views, but such points also draw crowds that may exceed the limits on group gatherings recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health agencies. It’s possible to travel during a pandemic. But drivers must take extra precautions to reduce their risk of being exposed to potentially deadly viruses like COVID-19.

Small Businesses Remain Resilient Amid Pandemic Amid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semiannual survey of small and mid-size business owners and executives, which concluded Sept. 8. Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in
response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted work-from-home policies. “Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now. The majority of businesses have reconfigured their operations and for many, these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus
Faucher. “Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.” According to the survey, half of businesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began. Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems,
electronic/website-enabled sales or electronic banking/ cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/ identity protection tools. The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either to the way they sell or deliver their products
and services or to the types of products and services they offer. Despite these positive signs of transformation and resilience, the drop in business activity over recent months forced many to take drastic measures through workforce reductions; nearly four in 10 businesses have cut workers since the start of the pandemic, although for 87 percent
of those, the decrease is considered temporary or a furlough. In fact, 58 percent of the businesses who had temporary layoffs or furloughs have already begun rehiring. Faucher said that while the worst may be over and economic activity is on the rebound, the “new normal” doesn’t mean a return to robust job and business growth that existed early in 2020. New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New
York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty
surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,
but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation
of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H.
Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”
The Plainview Water District is once again teaming up with the Toys for Tots Foundation to help spread the holiday spirit throughout the PlainviewOld Bethpage community. As it has done in years past, the Plainview Water District will serve as an official drop-off location for the Foundation, which is sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. “People have been through a lot this year and now, probably more than ever, some of our neighbors
could use a lift in spirits,” said Plainview Water District Chairman Marc B. Laykind. “This time of year is all about spreading kindness and a small gift can go a long way for a child who could otherwise feel left out this holiday season.
