LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Hicksville High School Seniors Honored awarded this distinction to approximately 16,000 high school students from the 1.5 million who took the exam nationwide. Both Sarah and Viveka and their fellow semifinalists will now compete for approximately 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Finalists will be announced in February, with the winners to be named in the spring. Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered this spring. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 scholarships
of $2,500. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 220 corporations and business organizations, and roughly 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored awards for finalists who will attend their respective institutions. Sarah plans to study education in her postsecondary career, while Viveka is considering the medical field.

“9-8-8” - Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (Woodbury) stood with mental health professionals, suicide awareness advocates and his colleagues in government on Tuesday, Oct. 29 to unveil legislation that would establish a dedicate “9-8-8” suicide crisis hotline phone number in Nassau County. Designed to be recognizable, accessible and remembered in a moment of mental health crisis, dialing “9-8-8” would connect the caller with the Bellmore-based Long Island Crisis Center, one of 163 designated crisis centers across the United States affiliated with the Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. This 24/7 crisis hotline can currently be reached by dialing (516)679-1111. “Mental health experts say that Americans need a ‘911 for the brain.’ When an individual is having a heart attack or in severe distress, there is still enough recognition of 911 to dial those numbers,” Legislator Lafazan said. “Yet when an individual is considering self-harm,
to expect that person to remember this number amid severe distress is not a pragmatic situation. That is why I have filed a bill to establish 9-8-8 as the Nassau County Suicide Hotline.” National statistics related to suicide demand an urgent call to action. According to a New York Times report, more than 47,000 Americans died by suicide in 2017 and another 1.4 million attempted to take their own lives. Furthermore, Forbes reported this September that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and is occurring at a rate higher than any point since World War II. Upon enactment, Legislator Lafazan’s
proposal directs the office of County Executive Laura Curran to pursue federal, state and private grants to fund a public awareness campaign to promote the 9-8-8 hotline. “My hope for when we pass this bill is two-fold. First and foremost, I want my generation to grow up with a ubiquitous level of recognition for this number,” Legislator Lafazan said. “Secondly, I hope that everybody who is considering self-harm remembers that resources are available here in Nassau County, and that no matter how difficult life may become, or no matter the level of severity of the issues you are dealing with, we are here to help you.”

Bethpage Turkey Drive To Benefit Island Harvest Food Bank Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 11th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 22, 2019, from 7 AM to 6:00 PM. The New York Jets will also support this year’s Turkey Drive and will have a Jets Football Legend on hand to help collect donated goods. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards, or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Those dropping off food can use the drivethrough donation lane for convenience, and Bethpage volunteers will carry your
bags/boxes, so there is no need to even get out of your car! “As the holiday season approaches, we once again invite the community to join us in giving thanks by supporting our neighbors and helping their families enjoy Thanksgiving,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “The Bethpage Turkey Drive is a fun and rewarding event. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

Two Syosset High School students were invited to perform at the 2019 National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-National Honor Ensembles concerts held November 6 - 10, 2019 at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, FL. The NAfME All-National Honor Ensembles (ANHE) represent the top performing high school musicians in the United States.
Pardiss Mehrzad was invited to perform with the NAfME All-National Honors Mixed Choir Ensemble and Kevin Xu was selected to play cello in the All-National Honors Symphony Orchestra. During the 2018-19 school year, talented music students across the United States and overseas in military-base schools practiced diligently to gain a chair or part in their local, district and state music honor ensembles.

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.
In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. Once again, Hicksville High School opened its doors after school to the district’s elementary students for a Safe Halloween celebration before Oct. 31, filled with crafts, games, music and plenty of treats! Students from the district’s elementary schools were invited to walk the decorated hallways of the high school to trick or treat and enjoy the many fun activities taking place in the classrooms and around the school, organized by
student clubs. Youngsters could participate in a skeleton scavenger hunt, toss a spider, make lollipop ghosts, reach blindly into a box for slippery, slimy parts of a monster’s anatomy (brains, intestines, etc.), create all types of Halloween crafts or simply go trick or treating from classroom to classroom. The hallways were decorated with cobwebs, spiderwebs, haystacks, pumpkins and other signature fall and Halloween favorites. Some classrooms were
even set up as not-toospooky mazes, including a “Frozen”-themed walk, created by the robotics club. The student and staff hosts also dressed for the occasion, sporting some of the latest, as well as more traditional, Halloween costumes. Special thanks to all of the youngsters who attended and all of the student clubs and staff members who contributed to yet another Safe Halloween at Hicksville High School.
Outstanding Performance! Once again, the Hicksville High School Comet Marching Band attended the New York State Field Band Conference championships, and once again, the group came home with an award for its outstanding performance! Competing in the Large School Class 3 Division of the conference, held at the Syracuse Carrier Dome on Oct. 27, the band earned third-place honors for the second consecutive year! According to first-year director Kerri Barnett, the group of 112 students has been working together
since June to bring its production, “The Snow Queen,” to life. It competed with bands around the state and was honored to receive the third-place award with a score of 82.6. Hicksville Public Schools Supervisor for Fine Arts Philip Grusenmeyer said this year’s band showed continued improvement and finished with a higher score rating at the championship than last year. Participation also increased from last year. Earlier this year, in September, the band won first place in the

Large School 3 Division of the New York State Field Band Conference competition at Brentwood High School. Throughout the competitive season, the band has consistently finished a close second behind Sachem High School, which won first place in Large School Class 3 Division at this year’s state championship. Congratulations to Barnett and the members of the Comet Marching Band for another stellar performance!
