uring the week of Halloween, Hicksville School District’s nine buildings brought Fall festivities to the forefront, hosting a variety of Pumpkin Patches and Costume Conventions for its students. At Lee Avenue Elementary School, one section of the backfield was covered with pumpkins ripe for picking by students. There were also haystacks and several inflatable Halloween decorations set up. Adopt-ASoldier The staff, residents and families of Island Nursing and Rehab Center collected food and other items to send to their new friends at the 106th Rescue Wing of Westhampton as part of the Adopt A Soldier program. The facility collected candy, gum, magazines, stamps, sunflower seeds, beef jerky, crossword puzzles, energy bars and granola bars, as well as financial donations to cover the cost of shipping. The items were collected and delivered this week to the 106th Rescue Wing so they could be mailed by the base to soldiers at a location that cannot be revealed due to security reasons. Past Peak By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

A student at Dutch Lane Elementary School in the Hicksville School District earned first place in her division in the New York Association for Pupil Transportation bus safety poster contest. Natalie Borrientos placed first in Division 1, where children in kindergarten through second-grade participated in the statewide contest. The theme of the 2014 bus safety poster contest was “Be smart — Be seen,

I wait in a safe place!” Borrientos’ poster has also been submitted to the National Association for Pupil Transportation for judging at the national level. On November 3rd, Borrientos, with her parents and two younger sisters in attendance, received a NYAPT certificate for the accomplishment and a $100 prize. Principal Susan Strauss and art teacher Diana Germinario presented the Borrientos

family with the honor during a special morning ceremony. “We are so very proud of Natalie for creating such a beautiful poster with a wonderful message,” Strauss said. “It’s great that Diana learned of the contest and encouraged our children to participate. That’s what we do here at Dutch Lane; we collaborate, and then we celebrate.”

Costumes & Pumpkins During the week of Halloween, Hicksville School District’s nine buildings brought fall festivities to the forefront, hosting a variety of pumpkin patches and costume conventions for its students. At Lee Avenue Elementary School, one section of the back field was covered with pumpkins ripe for picking by students. There were also haystacks and several inflatable Halloween

decorations set up. Several schools also hosted a parade prior to Halloween. Fork Lane began its festivities a full week before the big day, with its parade for children in kindergarten through third grade. Kids in costumes marched in the front traffic circle with their parents snapping photos. Woodland hosted its annual Character of Books Parade on Halloween, with every child dressing

up as their favorite book character. Each child held the book that their character appears in and walked with their classes around the school. “This parade promotes reading and also gives the children the opportunity to dress up in such adorable costumes,” Interim Superintendent of School Dr. Carl Bonuso said at Woodland’s parade. “It really is a wonderful sight to see.”

Serving Up A Treat The Hicksville School District honored the community’s senior citizens on November 6th with an entire afternoon of food and entertainment during its 23rd Annual Fall Luncheon for senior citizens. The luncheon, which was held at the Hicksville High School, featured

performances of the district’s marching band, string ensemble, Madrigal singers and theatre students. The program was held in one of the school’s gymnasiums, which had been decorated by the school’s art department to resemble a grand ballroom. “Hicksville is a special school community and it’s

your legacies the students here are able to carry on,” Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso said in his speech. “You are the ones from step one to make sure that you have beautiful schools and a beautiful community. I’d like to have all of the students and faculty applaud you.”

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit

reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of

consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union,
