Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh recently announced a new volunteer program that helps protect the lives of senior citizens. The Town of Oyster Bay is calling on students to volunteer in helping senior citizens register for Smart911, a free public safety service offered by the Nassau County Police Department that allows residents to provide 911 emergency call takers and emergency responders with one’s health condition, prescription medicines and other important medical information. Councilwoman Walsh stated “With many senior citizens not utilizing a computer, this volunteer initiative allows students help their aging neighbors register lifesaving information with the Nassau County Police Department and ensure the highest level of emergency response during a critical time. The information we submit
to Smart911 enables first responders to make better decisions more quickly when taking your call and arriving at your home during an emergency.” Smart911 allows all residents to create a free safety profile for their household at www. smart911.com that includes information necessary for 911 call takers to have in the event of an emergency. Details can include names and photos of all family members, medical conditions, allergies, pets, and emergency contacts. The Safety Profile created by residents will immediately display to 911 call takers when receiving an emergency call, and also provides a way for residents to include information that will enhance disaster response such as power needs for medical equipment, evacuation assistance and sheltering needs. In the event of a natural disaster, public
safety officials will be able to quickly determine which residents need assistance. “Smart911 streamlines the time necessary to collect critical information and allows faster assignment and dispatch of responders to call locations with more information to assist the residents quickly,” added Councilwoman Walsh. Smart911 also provides the capability to conduct Mass Emergency Alerting callouts, allowing residents to opt-in to receive emergency alerts from public safety officials based on geographic locations of events. These mass notifications can be sent through various means of communications including phone, text or e-mail. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian www.pal-o-mine.org
Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,
Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members. It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. “COLOR THE WORLD ORANGE DAY” - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with his colleagues on the Oyster Bay Town Board in welcoming Jennie Riegler of Plainview as well as Richard & Patricia Haunss of Syosset, to help build awareness to a debilitating condition known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). It is an extremely rare and debilitating nerve disorder that causes tremendous pain with no identifiable cure. Both families have a family member suffering from CRPS. At their request, the Town will support a crucial awareness initiative by proclaiming Monday, November 2nd, 2020 as “Color the World Orange Day” to help spread awareness. Students at Judy JacobsParkway Elementary School (JJP) in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently participated in the Sandy Hook Promise “Start with Hello” Week, an initiative aimed at bringing attention to the growing epidemic of social isolation. JJP faculty members organized various student activities throughout the week to promote an inclusive and connected environment. Students were encouraged to complete kind activities, like simply saying “hello” to a new peer, learning new ways to greet and approach new peers, examining how saying “hi” is impactful, and/or decorating paper masks with smiles. “Kindness and inclusion amongst students have always been a top priority in our District and is now part of the POB Mission Statement: Creating an environment where all students feel a sense of belonging,” said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “Teaching our children how to properly interact with their peers helps create a culture of acceptance and empowerment.” Fourth grade No Place for Hate Student Ambassadors created a video to teach their peers, both remote and in-person, how to notice the signs of a classmate struggling socially and how to reach out and help. The video was then shown to students in their

LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL HEROES WEEK - Long Island Community Hospital recently celebrated Heroes Week recognizing all of their healthcare heroes who stood strong against COVID-19, for the protection of our community. As part of the week-long celebration, gift bags including a commemorative medal and a long sleeve T-Shirts were distributed to the entire staff. The shirts were emblazoned with an original “Courageous Hearts” design, created especially for the hospital by a local designer. The original graphic depicts two caped heroes facing the challenges of the pandemic with purpose, commitment and care. Bethpage Senior Works Toward Eagle Scout Rank
Being deployed to the Middle East can be challenging for any U.S. soldier. But when you get difficult family news from back home, it can make getting through that period even more difficult. When Army Sergeant Ash received difficult family news, she took comfort in a rescued kitten that was near death. Now people wonder if she saved the kitten, or if the kitten actually saved her. Coming back home to the States, she is desperate to bring the cat, Rona, along with her. To help make it happen, she has turned to Guardians of Rescue, which has a reputation of helping soldiers. “We know all too well how important and lifesaving these pets are to our soldiers stationed in the Middle East,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “When they come back home, they can’t bear to leave them there, and we agree that it’s not safe. Leaving the cat in the Middle East will end up being a death sentence for it. attention after spending some time in it.” With the help of his Boy Scout Troop 46 and some family volunteers, he trimmed and weeded the landscaping, planted colorful flowers, power washed the patio and concrete benches and tables, renovated the memorial well and added more seating to the courtyard. David has been working toward the Eagle Scout rank since he was a Cub Scout in first grade. He
credits Bethpage with motivating him to stay the course. “Bethpage taught and allowed me to develop the leadership skills that allowed me to finish the project,” he said. Before officially achieving the Eagle Scout rank, David will have to complete the necessary paperwork and await his final board of review. He will be graduating in the spring and hopes to study music in college.
Syosset PTA-STA Scholarship Winners Announced
Rona had put up a great fight. She went on to spend all of her time with Rona, creating a loving bond and seeing her as a sign of hope and strength. “We saved each other and we belong together,” shares Sgt. Ash. “I pray that Guardians of Rescue will be able to bring Rona home to the States, where we can live out our lives together. I’m grateful for their help, as well as to everyone who donates to help make it possible.” Guardians of Rescue is no stranger to helping soldiers bring their pets back from deployment. They have helped many people bring back their dogs and cats, all through the help of the public. Bringing pets back is not an easy task, and it’s one that is also costly. Not only will Rona have to go through a medical check, but the organization will need to work with other organizations in the Middle East to help make it happen, and it will need to pay for the travel expenses. Syosset High School Receives Top Speech and Debate Award
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand have announced a massive, month long collection drive to help benefit needy families and less fortunate children throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the Town of Oyster Bay will host a first-of-its-kind ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 5th from 9am to 2pm (rain date for the event is Sunday, December 6th). In addition to the cruise thru holiday toy drive, collection boxes will also be located at multiple locations throughout the Town, ending December 14th. These unprecedented efforts will help collect new, unwrapped toys that will be used as gifts for needy children throughout the community. Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year we smashed the previous year’s
record in our toy drive collection. This year’s drive is especially crucial, as due to the coronavirus global pandemic, many more families than normal are feeling an undue financial burden. I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.” The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature an appearance by Santa Claus, and a drop box where kids can drop their letters to Santa off at. Model Train Show Postponed
Small Businesses Remain Resilient Amid Pandemic
Amid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semiannual survey of small and mid-size business owners and executives, which concluded Sept. 8. Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in
response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted work-from-home policies. “Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now. The majority of businesses have reconfigured their operations and for many, these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus
Faucher. “Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.” According to the survey, half of businesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began. Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems,
electronic/website-enabled sales or electronic banking/ cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/ identity protection tools. The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either to the way they sell or deliver their products
and services or to the types of products and services they offer. Despite these positive signs of transformation and resilience, the drop in business activity over recent months forced many to take drastic measures through workforce reductions; nearly four in 10 businesses have cut workers since the start of the pandemic, although for 87 percent
of those, the decrease is considered temporary or a furlough. In fact, 58 percent of the businesses who had temporary layoffs or furloughs have already begun rehiring. Faucher said that while the worst may be over and economic activity is on the rebound, the “new normal” doesn’t mean a return to robust job and business growth that existed early in 2020. Residents Encouraged to Donate Blood on December 7th To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier remind residents that a Blood Collection Drive will take place on Monday, December 7th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen,
which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. During this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in
the days before the Blood Drive. “Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure
