Citizens Engine Company Three Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilman Thomas Hand recently joined with NYS Assemblyman Michael Montesano and Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Hicksville Fire Department’s Citizens Engine Company Three. Since 1893, the members of the Hicksville
Fire Department’s Citizens Engine Company Three have dedicated themselves to protecting the lives and property of their neighbors from the ravages of fire and today, its members uphold the same commitment made by their predecessors. Hicksville Fire Department’s Citizens Engine Company Three is known as “The Pride of Midtown,” which is a tribute to the company’s
reliability and its wellknown reputation for excellence throughout Hicksville. Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Hand honored the Fire Department and its leaders at a reception at the Crest Hollow Country Club, and Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Hand commended them for 125 years of outstanding service to the community.

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books!

Lodestar Children’s Services is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that formed in 2016 with a mission to “empower children and families”. Lodestar is a difference maker in children’s mental health on Long Island. Currently, they serve 70+ families with the goal of preventing out-of-home placement by providing in-home support and assistance to families with children who have severe psychiatric disabilities. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading.
If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM!

Mind Where Your Music Comes From

Over the past few months I have received numerous letters of appreciation from you that have filled my heart with humility and love. I am grateful to hear that my writing is impacting lives. I am also the first to admit that my writing is stream of consciousness and many times I do not know where the information I share comes from. What I do know for sure is that it does not come from me, but through me. Many times I will awaken in the morning bursting with information that I must write down immediately, for fear that it will disappear before I’ve had the chance to rub my eyes and stumble into the kitchen for a morning dose of caffeine. I call it my “morning download.” I have always believed that each of us is bestowed with gifts to share, which are infused into us by a higher source. I am just as much the student as I am the teacher. Last week I was having a conversation with an old friend about the heroes and mentors we all put up on pedestals, and whom we admire for their courage and
their clarity. The late Dr. Maya Angelou was one of those people for me. I joked with my friend and said, “I don’t know what I would have done if I ever witnessed Dr. Angelou losing her temper and throwing a tantrum.” We laughed, and then my friend said, “It would have made her human.” Indeed, at my best I live in the space of what I write, and yet, at my worst I am only human. I have the occasional bad day, but I would like to think my best days far outweigh my worst days. That is all any of us can hope for while in the flesh. We must forgive ourselves and forgive others as we navigate the human condition, and be kind to yourself when you stumble. Celebrate the victories and learn from the mistakes. Don’t you know that the song you play had to be written, composed, vocalized and instrumentally accompanied by others? And let us not forget the sound engineers, producers, and the technology that allows the radio waves to bring this song into my home. You, sir, are merely an instrument that allows this beautiful music to play. But do not think for a moment that you are the song’s sole creator.”

The Power of Zen
was highlighted in my earlier column on Zen. This simple (but very effective skill) works this way: if you begin to feel stress building up, start taking deep breathes, hold it for a moment, then slowly exhale. This exercise works well when driving, or in any situation where feeling tense. 2. The Power of Positive Thinking. Using Zen principles, be aware that its power heavily depends on a heavy dose of positive thinking. In a large sense, positive thinking is the carrier that turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Utilizing this technique, you will find that the negative thoughts that were on your mind start to slowly disappear, being replaced by feeling much better about yourself ! 3. Let Your Sleep Work For You. Shortly before
falling asleep, think of all the good things you could accomplish the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! As an added note, I have used this many times when I have a decision to make. I think about it when falling asleep, and in many cases I have the answer when I wake up. You should try it some time. In Summary: Begin Using the Deep Breathing Exercise, Utilize the Power of Positive Thinking, Let Your Sleep Work For you. You are now ready to move forward and give it a try. Good Luck! Peace.

Dr. Drew Pinsky Talks Mental Health and Gun Violence in America By Allison Kugel
Dr. Drew Pinsky’s long running call-in show Loveline, with Adam Carolla, aired on MTV for 32 years and pioneered a pop culture adaptation of relationship and safe sex education. The show, featuring an assortment of celebrity guest hosts, served as a lifeline to multiple generations. Dr. Drew’s Teen Mom franchise, also an MTV staple, opened the eyes of television viewers to the trials of teen pregnancy and teen parenthood where previous methods had fallen short. Dr. Drew’s critically acclaimed VH1 docu-series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and it spinoffs Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew and Sober House, allowed viewers an intimate look inside the causes of addiction and the arduous road to recovery. With his HLN show, Dr. Drew On Call, which aired from 2011 to 2016, he broadened his television audience, delving into the behavioral components behind the headlines of the day. Dr. Drew’s New York Times bestselling book, The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America (Harper Collins), examines the widespread adoption of celebrity narcissism within our culture.
Allison Kugel: Why are school shootings a recent phenomenon over the last 19/20 years? Dr. Drew Pinsky: There’s a multiplicity of factors and no simple answer. Obviously, it’s guns and the type of guns. But in addition, it’s the access that people have; people who have a proclivity towards self-harm or
Allison Kugel: When I am speaking with a physician, like yourself, I wonder how you feel about the intangible factors, like a spiritual component. Dr. Drew Pinsky: I am always challenged by my patients in that regard. They will tell me that their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, that I turned them towards it, but really it’s the spiritual connection they make that leads them into a full recovery. I’m okay with that. Whatever gets them there! I think there can be a stigma with words like “soul” or “spiritual” because people tend to equate them with religion. But I think [spiritual] is a word people can understand without indoctrinating religion into it. Allison Kugel: Do you think a focus on social media, instead of being more community oriented like in generations past, is leading to a spiritual breakdown? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I think it has accelerated the mob, and mob-like behavior. It gives people a sense of pseudo-intimacy, which is quasipathological. It’s not real. There is a sense of connection, with no real connection. It gratifies only the most basest of emotions – envy, aggression, arousal, and all of these addictive emotions. It doesn’t do anything for empathy, nurturing, service, making a difference. I don’t
see it as the cause, but as an amplifier of these problems. Allison Kugel: What are your thoughts about how media chooses to cover mass shootings and other large scale violent crimes? Dr. Drew Pinsky: There’s contagion, not doubt about it. There’s contagion with things like suicide, all sorts of violent acts, and with pathological behaviors like cutting. All these things have contagion associated with them. I almost feel like it’s a double-edged sword. Yes, there’s contagion, but we also have to take a good hard look at the realities we face. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about you. When you were in high school and college, what coping skills did you cultivate to deal with things like anxiety, depression, stress and peer pressure? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I had a problem with that. I had panic attacks. I’m still formally diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I was depressed when I was nineteen and there were no services for adolescents at that time. I think that’s what got me interested in helping that population with mental health, in general. I was so mishandled, it was egregious. I thought maybe I was having a seizure when I was having a panic attack; I wasn’t sure what it was. But I understood there was a mental health issue. I went for help and I was told that I needed to get my act together, and I should take long walks in the woods. I would have happily gotten my act together (laughs)! Allison Kugel: We’re seeing a disturbing trend of young males and gun violence. What are we missing when it comes to male adolescent mental health? Dr. Drew Pinsky: Adolescent males, when they have spiritual and psychological problems, become aggressive. And when they don’t have some sort of outlet that they are engaged in, any time there’s social unrest, there’s young males. That’s just the way we’re wired. Males need to be challenged. This sort of co-dependent helicopter parenting over the last twenty years has been about preventing children from experiencing discomfort. I think there is a major deficiency right now. In addition to our spiritual emptiness, we have lost the ability to tolerate ordinary misery. Our children need to experience ordinary misery to learn how to regulate their emotions and overcome. Unless we are challenged, we feel deficient. Because of our
narcissism as parents, we can’t tolerate seeing the child’s discomfort and disappointment, because it mobilizes our own internal misery, which we avoid. We use drugs and alcohol, and extreme sports, and all kinds of ways of avoiding. But when we include our children in making sure they don’t have those feelings as well, there’s a problem. I think that in some way, it is affecting the young male. It’s probably experienced differently from the young female. Allison Kugel: Yes, internalize emotions.

Allison Kugel: I’m going to throw a scenario at you, and tell me what you think could be a viable solution: A single parent home with limited financial resources, and an undersupervised child who’s beginning to show signs of deteriorating mental health… Dr. Drew Pinsky: I feel unworthy of the question you’re asking me, except to say, make sure there is access to mental health services and that there is no stigma associated with that. But there are other solutions which goes under the heading of Mutual Aid, whether it’s a church or a community. I’m thinking about the book, Bowling Alone (Simon & Schuster). It’s about the decline of club membership in the United States. I think we’re all bowling alone (laughs). And you can’t do it; you can’t do it by yourself! But you also can’t do it with perfunctory supervision. There has to be real, intimate contact. I’m not sure we know how to do that. That’s why where there are resources out there. We need to deploy it and amplify it, and build community around it. Many people are not good at it and don’t even tolerate closeness anymore, mostly because many people have been neglected or abused. When you’ve been hurt as a result of close
relation, guess what you want to avoid in the future. We must overcome that. Allison Kugel: What kind of impact do you feel you’ve had on young people? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I hope I make them think. I’ve broadened the scope of who I want to influence. I’m not just trying to influence young people. I would like to influence all different age groups. Ultimately, particularly with young people, I’ve noticed that the most efficient way to affect their behavior is to give them a relatable source. If you remember, Loveline was about taking phone calls and then we would analyze the cases. With Teen Mom, it’s about looking at the consequences of teen pregnancy. When they approached me about Teen Mom, I knew it would have a positive effect on teen pregnancy. Lo and behold, there is ample research now to show that it did (according to the CDC, teenage births have steadily declined, across all ethnicities, over the last ten years). For young people, I always like looking at the behavior, and then saying, “Here’s how to analyze that, here’s what this means.”

Bethpage Hall of Fame Members The Bethpage Union Free School District welcomed six individuals and one athletic team into the district’s Hall of Fame with an induction ceremony sponsored by the Bethpage Educational Foundation in the high school’s gymnasium on October 27th. This year’s individual inductees included Steve Furrey, Class of 1973 and current Central Boulevard Elementary School principal; Brian McGrath, Class of 1992; Robert Sarli, retired educator; Bernard Schutz, Class of 1964; Michael Trotter, Class of 1990; and Sandra Watson, board of education trustee since 1986. Additionally, the 2013 high school girls’
gymnastics team along with coach Kim Rhatigan were honored with inductions. The evening opened with remarks from Superintendent of School David Schneider along with former Superintendent Terry Clark, middle school principal Kevin Fullerton and high school principal Nicholas Jantz. All four administrators celebrated the theme of Bethpage being a wonderfully unique district and community, which all of the inductees symbolize as great examples. James McGlynn, board of education trustee and Bethpage Educational Foundation Secretary, also addressed the audience and thanked all those who
helped create this year’s event while congratulating all of the honorees. Nassau County Legislatures Rose Walker and Laura Schaefer were on hand as well to honor the inductees. Following a few remarks, the two county legislatures presented citations to the new hall of famers and congratulations from the county office. The district thanks the Bethpage Education Foundation for a rememberable induction ceremony as well as the students and volunteers that assisted. And most importantly, congratulations to this year’s newest hall of fame members!

Simai Deng and Haona Wu, members of the Syosset High School Physics Group, took 2nd place at the Teslamania Competition held on October 20th, at Stony Brook University. Teslamania is a physics demonstration competition sponsored by the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe for teachers, students, scientists and enthusiasts. The day offers opportunities to share ideas, strengthen
relationships, connect with the community and celebrate physics. Modeled after a similar competition held in Europe, Teslamania has grown annually on Long Island since 2007. Remarked Mr. Slesinski, a physics teacher at the high school and the Physics Group’s advisor, “Simai and Haona did a wonderful job preparing and presenting their climbing monkey demonstration,” which was one of the highlights of the

Hispanic Heritage Lesson All first-grade classes, including Mrs. Bove, Mrs. Koehler and Mrs. Mauro’s students, at Old Country Road Elementary School in Hicksville enjoyed an informative and fun lesson in Hispanic heritage that ended with a musicmaking craft. In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) students learned about famous
Hispanic newsmakers and influencers in history and present-day society, including migrant worker activist Cesar Chavez, artist Frida Kahlo, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina astronaut. The lesson ended with students writing about, then creating their own zampoñas (panpipes) using paper, crayons, straws and
tape. Zampoñas can be found in many different countries around the world but are often associated with the Andes mountains of South America. Students enjoyed not only making these instruments, but playing them as well! English as a new language teacher Lucy Vieco coordinated the lesson.

Dressed in Halloween Best Elementary schools in the Bethpage Union Free School District celebrated Halloween by hosting costume parades on October 31st, at their respective buildings. Charles Campagne celebrated Halloween with theme of “Book Character Dress Up Day.” Students paraded through the hallways and outside the school dressed as their favorite characters, and third-, fourth- and fifthgrade students visited kindergarten, first- and second-grade classrooms to read various books throughout the day. The
older students selected books that they shared with their younger peers. Each grade at Central Boulevard paraded out of the main entrance to display their Halloween costumes while taking class pictures. Individual classes also took part in various Halloween activities throughout the day to celebrate the holiday. Kramer Lane held its Halloween parade in the afternoon. Students showed off their unique costumers and styles and many dressed in group costumes such as the
“Three Blind Mice.” The staff at each school also came together on Halloween to dress in group costumes. Those at Charles Campagne banded together as a football team, sporting Eagles shirts, eye paint and athletic wear while Central Boulevard’s staff represented the “Incredibles” and Kramer Lane’s dressed as superheroes. Thank you to all of the parents who were able to come to each of the school’s parades and support the students.
