The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has received almost $15 million in Hurricane Sandy recovery appropriations for coastal cleanup and marsh restoration at national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Contracts have been awarded to fund debris and downed tree removal. The Service will use the majority of the funding - $11 million - to restore

marshes at three national wildlife refuges, improving the resiliency of the Long Island coast against future storms. An additional $1 million will be invested in projects to repair visitor facilities and Service assets damaged during the super storm. “The marshes at Long Island refuges helped to protect inland areas from the full brunt

of Hurricane Sandy,” said refuge manager Michelle Potter. “We will focus our restoration efforts on returning the ecological functions of these marshes by removing invasive plants, allowing native plants to return and restoring natural tidal flows. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife habitat and enhance the

refuges’ value for coastal protection.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Coastal Environment Group, Inc. received a $2.5 million contract for the debris removal. The company

is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses. Coastal Environment Group will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris removal should begin in the next few weeks. SavATree, a tree removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress. For safety considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance. The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432

acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Restoration and mitigation projects are part of a comprehensive, multiagency Hurricane Sandy Resiliency plan that Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently announced in advance of the storm’s one-year anniversary. The refuge has just begun project planning and will update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward. Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife, and serve as natural extreme weather buffer zones for many of the island’s populated areas. On October 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) held its 30th Anniversary Gala at JEWEL by Tom Schaudel in Melville. The event raised over $50,000 for ADRC. This year’s honorees were Mark Ordan, chief executive officer of Sunrise Senior Living, and Dignity Home Care. Mr. Ordan was recognized for his work and commitment for caring for those with Alzheimer’s Disease. He joined Sunrise Senior Living in 2008 as the company’s chief administrative and investment officer. He

was later named CEO in November 2008. Prior to working at Sunrise Senior Living, he was the CEO of the Mills Corporation, Fresh Fields Markets, and Balducci’s. He also serves as the Director of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and is a founding member of the Young Presidents’ Organization’s National Capital Area Chapter. Sunrise Senior Living offers many programs for the elderly including assisted living services, independent living, short-term rehabilitation services and care for those

with memory loss or Alzheimer’s Disease. Dignity Home Care is an agency that assists senior citizens with care services that they would need at home, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The staff consists of nurses and caregivers that provide the utmost support for the elderly in Nassau, Suffolk. Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, New York City and Westchester. Anxiously Awaiting A Decision Waiting to hear back from a college is stressful! After applying “early decision” to a toptier college last month, I have begun the nervewracking time period that can only be likened to purgatory. Waiting for that admissions packet to land in my mailbox is truly the most anxiety provoking task that I have ever been subjected to. As tortuous as it was to apply to college, the wait is so much more stressful. Now that I have applied, I am starting to realize that my whole life has been a road leading up to this point. Every decision, every action

I have ever taken, will boil down to one letter. One decision. Whether I get accepted, rejected or even waitlisted, the decision from that university will shape the rest of my life. Some say it is all luck. Even if you are a stellar candidate, you still have a shot at rejection. I like to think that I am what many would call a “wellrounded student.” I am good in school, I have decent test scores, I am on a sport, I am involved in many clubs and I wrote a decent essay. Sadly, if I get rejected, none of these factors will matter. They wouldn’t carry any weight.

Even if you were to try your whole life to be exactly what a college would desire, you could still get turned down. There is no guarantee of admission. The entire college admissions process is one big gamble. If you don’t get in, it was not meant to be. If that particular college does not want you, another college will. The point that I am trying to make is that if you don’t get in, don’t sweat it. The place you spend your four years does not define you. Everything always works out for the best.

The Age Of Innocence By: Jamie Lynn Ryan To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we

grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will once again host the Integrated Medical Foundation’s (IMF) Annual Blue Ribbon Run at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike Woodbury. The event will take place on Sunday morning, November 17th. The race, which is slated to start at 9:30 a.m., raises funds to help in the fight against prostate cancer. “It also supports the Integrated Medical Foundation’s quality education and outreach programs, services and screening initiatives,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Building awareness to this important cause is a significant component to the Annual Blue Ribbon Run and the Town is

pleased to assist in this effort.” The 5K course winds through beautiful SyossetWoodbury Community Park and its surroundings. Free prostate cancer screenings will be offered on-site, as well as an informative urology and men’s health exhibit, refreshments and fun prizes for participants. C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano noted that the run also provides the ideal setting to discuss the importance for men to have a prostate screening. “It’s simple, early detection saves lives,” Councilman Coschignano said. “1 out of 6 American men will have prostate cancer in their lifetime. Statistics show that regular screening can lead to early detection of prostate cancer.” According to the IMF, screenings have decreased

the prostate cancer death rate by nearly 40% since they began 20 years ago. The organization urges men over 40, or men with a family history of prostate cancer, to talk to their health care provider about prostate cancer. “The Integrated Medical Foundation is a recognized leader in promoting awareness and early detection of prostate cancer,” Councilman Coschignano said. “The Town, through providing the venue and logistical support for the Annual Blue Ribbon run, is pleased to partner with IMF in this endeavor.” Those interested in participating in the run can visit the website of the Integrated Medical Foundation at www. imfcares.org or call the organization at 631.247.0100.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella reminds all civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce in the Town that they are welcome to be listed on, and linked to, the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “The Town is always looking for ways to make the Town’s website as informative and convenient as possible for residents,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “By listing civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce, residents in our communities have a handy resource for contacting the organizations that represent them. It also gives the organizations more exposure and an opportunity to expand their membership. Many civics and chambers already participate. Just go to our website, www. oysterbaytown.com, scroll down the directory on the left side of the homepage and click on ‘Community Resources-Helpful Links’ to see the list.” The Councilman went on to say that civic associations and Chambers of Commerce interested in

being listed on the Town’s website should write a letter, on official stationery, listing the name of the civic or chamber; the president; a mailing address; a contact person, if different from the president; the phone number; and, if the organization has a Web site, the Web address. The letter should be addressed to: Supervisor John Venditto, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11771. He asked that civics and chambers already listed on the website check their information and submit any updates. “The Town’s goal is to have its website serve as a valuable resource to our residents by providing an on-line information hub that offers a wide range of information and news about our Town, as well as issues and events,” Councilman Muscarella said. “We know from the volume of e-mail, phone calls and comments we receive that many people make a point of visiting our Web site on a regular basis. By adding civic associations and Chambers of Commerce, the Town is providing two important

links for residents to their communities.” The Councilman invited residents who have not visited the Town’s website to do so. “There is a wealth of information on our website,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “Along with the latest news releases, copies of Town brochures that can be printed, permit and license applications, a history of the Town, and biographical information on Town officials, the site contains a description of the various departments, programs and services, and lists of meeting dates for the Town Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, the Planning Advisory Board and the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as well as the Town Code. Agendas for Town Board meetings and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings are posted regularly. The Town also posts closings and other important information during inclement weather. Additionally, you’ll find handy links to other useful websites. It’s a great way to stay informed about your Town government.”

Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week is celebrated annually during the week that includes Veterans Day, and provides a special period where Submarine Veterans from USSVI Bases (chapters) bring comfort and joy to sick children. Gifted & Talented Program A fun and innovative approach to scientific theory and research is what parents are calling the new Manhasset Gifted and Talented program, Manhasset Kids Question Everything! The program debuts this fall with four sessions and is headed by Manhasset district’s science teacher Michael O’Brien. This objective but humorous look at theories and investigative practices uses phenomena like Big Foot and manmade killer viruses to help tweens and teens question (and try to answer) everything. The participants view episodes of “Joe Rogan Questions Everything” then the kids start talking about these interesting, unorthodox or just plain weird things that most people don’t believe exist. “This is an exciting program for kids. If they enjoy watching videos and learning about science they will have a great time,” Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented Programming Director Joanne Thalheimer says. What do scientists, educators, and eye witnesses have to say about the phenomena? What methods and

theories are there about it? How far will people go to prove the existence of the unexplainable? What various types of practices, scientific or just plain daring are used to understand the phenomena? These are just some of the questions posed to participants as they examine different topics each week. Because some episodes and discussions may have some adult vocabulary and discussions of potentially life-threatening events that younger children might find a little frightening, Manhasset SEPTA is opening the program to participants in 7th grade and up. LONG ROAD TO SAFETY - An AAA representative, along with her trusty puppet pal Matt, used humor and role-playing to demonstrate proper safety procedures to kindergarten students at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District. Together, they covered all the basics, such as making sure everyone in the car wears a seatbelt, as well as the more complicated safety procedures like remaining calm in the car, not distracting the driver, the dangers of front-seat airbags for young passengers and the importance of using a booster seat until children are the proper height. Using chairs and a seatbelt, student volunteers enacted correct and incorrect car behavior for both the passengers and the driver.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson reminds residents that the Town is accepting nomination forms for the 16th Annual “Women of Distinction” awards program. “Each year, the Town has the privilege of honoring designated ‘Women of Distinction’ in each of eight categories,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Winners will be recognized in March 2014 in celebration of Women’s History Month.” The Councilwoman noted that anybody who would like to submit a candidate for the “Women of Distinction” need only fill out a nominating form and submit to the Town. Gala Benefit Set The Diabetes Health and Wellness Academy of N.Y.C. announced its 2013 Annual Gala Benefit will be held on December 6th from 7 p.m. through midnight at The Uniondale Marriott located at 101 James Doolittle Blvd in Uniondale. Themed “Creating A Unique Learning Environment Through Health And Learning Initiatives”, the red-carpet fund-raiser gala will recognize individuals whose efforts have contributed to diabetes and health awareness.
