Gravity Project A Success

t was raining pumpkins at Syosset High School on October 27th as Physics students at the school conducted an experiment on gravity’s acceleration rate with the help of a fire truck and a bevy of pumpkins. Using a bucket ladder from the Syosset Fire Department, the students, under the direction of Physics teacher Mark Hanik, dropped pumpkins and other objects from the highest point of the ladder to calculate the actual rate of acceleration due to gravity.

Another classroom featured games, such as guessing the amount of candy corn in a confined space, and spooky prizes were awarded. Halloween Treat

Scores of elementary students and their teachers got a Halloween treat with a trip to the Big Apple Circus. Just one day before Halloween, fifty students and school staffers attended the Big Apple Circus of the Senses, courtesy of Manhasset SEPTA. The performance took place at Lincoln Center in New York City on Thursday, October 30th. Manhasset School’s Assistant Director Gary LaFemina noted, “The trip was amazing,” and that the students greatly enjoyed the show as “their faces lit up to the varying act. LaFemina also added that the experience touched the lives of many Manhasset’s children as he thanked SEPTA for the gifted tickets. “SEPTA is grateful to all the sponsors of the Circus of the Senses and to the Big Apple Circus for providing the tickets to our organization,” Manhasset SEPTA President Diane Treacy stated. “Furthermore, we are delighted that SEPTA is able to provide for a third MONSTERS INVADE - Zombies roamed through the indoor graveyard at Hicksville year these tickets to the

SMART SAFETY? They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

Breakfast Is Served Effective November 3rd, Bethpage High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School will be offering complete breakfast options for all of their students and staff. The meals, which will be served prior to the start of first period, are free for those who already qualify for free/ reduced lunch and only $2 for students and $3 for adults.

“Serving breakfast is important,” said Assistant Superintendent for Business Joseph Marchesiello. “All data shows that students perform better when they have a full stomach.” All of the offerings meet new state dietary requirements to form a “complete breakfast” and are conveniently served on school premises. formula for the acceleration rate of gravity. A crowd of students gathered at a safe distance to watch the pumpkins drop and splatter on the parking lot below. The pumpkin drop is held every year at Syosset High School and has become a tradition to which the students look forward every fall.

Youth Dance Registration The Town of Oyster Bay’s popular Youth Dance Programs are returning this winter for residents and their children seeking to enjoy a fun-filled class of music and activity during the cold season, according to Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella. “The Youth Dance Programs offer residents a great opportunity to enhance their child’s development and rhythm through creative movement, songs, and games,” Councilman Muscarella said. Registration for the Youth Dance Program will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Recreation Office (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa) on Monday, December 1st from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please note that space is limited and the Youth Dance Program is open to Town of Oyster Bay residents only.

The Youth Dance Program is a five week program for boys and girls between the ages of three and four that runs from January 5th through February 9th, 2015 on Mondays or Thursdays (10 to 10:50 a.m. or 11 to 11:50 a.m.) with one class a week per child. Every Youth Dance Program will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (located at Bethpage Community Park), in Community Room 1. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located at 1001 Stewart Avenue,

Bethpage. “The Youth Dance Programs have been very enjoyable to residents in the past,” Councilman Muscarella said. “As is always the case, a parent or legal guardian must be present at every class.
