Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

Recognizing Alzheimer Awareness Month and the Impact on Fellow Long Islanders LIAD Center Provides Much Needed Hope & Support

With more than 50,000 people on Long Island suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, many of us are all too familiar with the effects of cognitive impairment. During the month of November, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, is a time to celebrate caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones and individuals with dementia such as Alzheimer’s. “Until there is a cure, the Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center is a critical resource that can help families find guidance, support and hope,” said Executive Director Tori Cohen, LCSW. “Our licensed social workers provide trusted referrals, including doctors who may prescribe medications to help alleviate symptoms and slow the progress of the disease. Living with Alzheimer’s and other diagnosed cognitive disorders is not easy and should not be

undertaken without help from professionals.” As dementia is a disease that affects thinking and memory, it is among the most feared and most devastating. Dementia is not inevitable as we age. While “senior moments” can happen to anyone, at any age, most of those occurrences are, in fact, just moments. “Pre-pandemic, specialized services for individuals with dementia and their caregivers were already in high demand. Now more than ever, caregivers are bearing the brunt of their loved one’s disease- trying to keep them safe, healthy, active, and engaged while at home,” said Director of Counseling Services and Health Operations Grace Johnson, LCSW. “This often contributes to caregiver stress, sadness, and burnout. At LIAD, we continue to care for the mental-emotional health of caregivers by providing support groups and psychotherapy. Our goal is to help caregivers navigate

challenges and avoid longerterm health or mental health problems.” Below are some signs and symptoms to watch out for that may signal the onset of dementia: Memory loss Forgetting new information, relying on family or friends to help ‘fill in the gaps’ or for reminders. Difficulty with tasks that were once familiar Problems cooking a meal that was once familiar, difficulty using appliances, or completing a job task. Time and place confusion Struggling with dates, periods of time, or understanding a clock. Also, difficulties may arise with places, such as not being able to find the restroom in a

The Plainview Water District (PWD) recently held its third-annual Pharmaceutical Take Back Day, where a steady stream of residents collectively brought more than 300 pounds of their unwanted or expired medications to be properly disposed. A component of the District’s Preserve Plainview initiative, each year the drive-thru event aims to provide a convenient way to safely dispose of medications so they don’t ultimately find their way into Long Island’s solesource aquifer. “We are proud of the Plainview-Old Bethpage community as they once again took advantage of this opportunity to dispose of their unused or expired medications safely,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “The saying it takes a village is particularly true when it comes to our collective responsibility

to protect our sole-source aquifer. We are thrilled at the increasing turnout at this event each year.” When someone flushes medications down the toilet or throws them in the garbage, there is a likelihood that the medications’ contents will ultimately enter the District’s water supply. If there is an elevated presence of toxins from pharmaceuticals in the groundwater, the District will have no choice but to invest in expensive treatment systems so the impurities can be removed before they reach customers’ homes. To encourage widespread participation this year in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, the PWD ensured Pharmaceutical Take Back Day, which is held in partnership with the Nassau County Police Department, was as simple, convenient and safe as

The officials completed the seeding of approximately three million clam and 250,000 oyster seedlings. “Oyster Bay Harbor is one of the crown jewels of Oyster Bay, and I’m proud to say that under my administration we are now doing more than ever before to improve its water quality,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These seedlings, many of which were grown

The annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 20, 2020, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. At the 12th annual food drive, a no-contact donation car drive-through will enable residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from vehicles. The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 foodinsecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelfstable milk (please, no glass containers). Smaller sized frozen turkeys are particularly needed, to
