Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its Fourth Annual East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival in Westhampton Beach on Saturday, October 17th. Thirty-two teams and 376 individuals came out in support of Alzheimer’s research and awareness. This year’s event featured a pre-walk butterfly release in honor of those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s or have lost their battle with the disease. The walk wrapped with the annual Fall Festival. Hundreds of participants, volunteers and vendors turned out for the event, which raised nearly $75,000 in support of Alzheimer’s programs and services for local families. It is the largest

developed the Teach Immigration program in Long Island five years ago to empower educators and students with the knowledge to teach immigration factually and critically. Using lessons based on current immigration law and policy, providing training on deliberations via their partnership with Street Law, Inc, a non-profit education organization, the program fosters critical thinking on immigration

issues, promotes positive school culture and supports student-driven projects. Teachers interested in the program attended free trainings in the summer of 2015 and the fall of 2014 and were supplied with teaching materials and recommended activities. This partnership helps to educate students about immigration law and policy in relevant, engaging ways.

Students from Brentwood UFSD and Uniondale UFSD came together to discuss the topic of immigration at the Teach Immigration Law and Policy Student Forum. Nassau BOCES in collaboration with the American Immigration Council and Street Law, Inc. were the hosts for this first-time event on Long Island. The seventh-grade students from Lawrence Road Middle in Uniondale and ninth-graders from the Brentwood Freshman Center engaged in concurrent workshops about visas for immigrants and the President’s executive action regarding immigration. Students were led in the session by experts in the field, immigration attorneys and community volunteers. More than 50 students worked in groups to learn deliberative dialogue as a way to discuss and examine immigration reform and issues in the upcoming presidential election. “The information the students are learning will effect change in their own community,” said April Francis, Lawrence Road Middle School Social Studies teacher. “This is an opportunity for project-based service learning. These students are motivated” said Brentwood English teacher Dr. Steve Burby. The American Immigration Council, a non-partisan non-profit,

For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -

we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.

After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

Manhasset Special Education PTA (SEPTA) Gifted and Talented division is proud to have Tobi J. Phillips, Ed. D., president and founder of Village East Gifted, Inc., discuss what parents and educators can do to best support brilliant children. The presentation will take place in the Manhasset Library Community Room on the lower level with all parents, educators and school staff encouraged to attend this free event. Light refreshments will be served. Village East Gifted, Inc. is an enrichment program for gifted students ages 4-18 across LI. With 35+ years of experience, Dr. Phillips has worked with students ranging from academically-challenged

Dr. Phillips will review the Village East Gifted’s Approach to Gifted Education and share their highly effective methods for educating gifted children by Phillips RBM (Reawakening Brilliant Minds) Approach. As part of the American Heart Association’s Work Out for Heart initiative promoting the benefits of healthy and active lifestyles, first-, secondand third-grade students at Fork Lane Elementary School collectively raised more than $7,000.

Following their remarkable efforts, the students participated in a series of workouts, including sitting-andreaching, hula-hooping, jump roping, performing push-ups and curling dumbbells. The activities, in conjunction with each

grade’s fundraising efforts, highlight the school’s promoting of heart health. Fourth- and fifth-graders will also be participating in the activities.

On Monday, October 26th, 30 members of the Hicksville school community attended the first Supe’s On session hosted by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso. Conversation focused on leadership qualities and tips for success. Participants enjoyed light refreshments and a cup of coffee…or soup! The feedback garnered through Supe’s On was extremely

positive. Members of the community felt the session was powerful and informative, and that the presentation on leadership was both engaging and enlightening. It was also expressed that sessions such as this show how a school district and library can work together. The next Supe’s On session is scheduled for January 4th, the topic of which is still to be

determined. Many thanks to Hicksville Public Library Director Elizabeth Goldfrank and the members of the Library Board for so graciously hosting this event; Dan Friedman and Dan Russ for their technical expertise; and Chris Waters, for the many hours finalizing arrangements and tending to the details necessary to organize this cooperative endeavor.

After bad weather rained out Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) School District’s John F. Kennedy High School’s first attempt at a homecoming celebration, students added their homecoming activities to this year’s Coaches Vs. Cancer Game. The annual homecoming parade and crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, in addition to American Cancer Society Fundraisers, brought together the Plainview community, students and alumni as they shared school pride during the football game against Farmingdale High School. The parade featured student designed banners celebrating various amusement parks such as “Soph Splash,” the sophomore class’ take on the water park, Splish Splash. Each grade competed against each other in hopes judges would claim them as the grade with the best banner. The high school

cheerleading team, band and student groups also marched in the parade. After the parade, hundreds of fans dressed in pink to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and gathered to watch the football game and halftime show. During halftime, the high school band, cheerleaders and PAL cheerleaders performed. After the performance, Assistant Principal Sharon Lasher announced this year’s homecoming king and queen, two special education students Cara Hayman and David Lieberman. “I was shocked and honored,” said Homecoming King David Lieberman when asked how he felt when he was crowned. His Queen echoed his reaction saying, “I will never forget this night, it was the best night of my life.” “It means I am respected and liked,” continued Homecoming Queen Cara Hayman. Teachers nominate

students for the court and students vote for their top 12, the two with the highest votes are chosen as King and Queen. Both students are involved in the School’s Best Buddies program. “This event accurately displays the values instilled in Plainview-Old Bethpage students and the spirit shared by the entire school community,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lorna Lewis. “For students to vote for two students who truly deserve the recognition and donate their time and efforts toward helping find a cure for millions of cancer patients throughout the United States, is truly a reflection of our school’s success.” In preparation of the Coach’s Vs. Cancer game, students and staff fundraised throughout the past week in an effort to reach a $5,000 goal in total donations.

understanding the sacrifices veterans have made to protect American freedoms and liberties. She read aloud from her book, used veterans’ portraits to accompany firsthand accounts of heroes in her own neighborhood, led a sing-along and encouraged

students of the Service Club chose to donate their leftover Halloween candy to Operation Gratitude. The organization sends close to 100,000 care packages to the United States military every year.

Pride-Filled Week Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School students recently celebrated P.R.I.D.E. Week (Personal best, Respect, Impulse Control, Decision making and Empathy.) Students participate in a week of activities that capture the character of the school and help build leadership and teamwork skills. PRIDE week

aims to build a sense of camaraderie and spirit among the students. Students in the fifth through eighth grades are divided into two teams and are challenged to perform certain acts of kindness to gain points. Each team participates in dress-up days throughout the week including dressing in team colors, wearing a favorite hero shirt, pajamas, sport

team and finally their PRIDE shirt. At the week’s end, students compete in “PRIDE Night.” Teams compete in multiple events to win points for their team including, “Minute to Win It,” “Hula Hoop Chain Game,” “Over/ Under” and a “three-legged challenge.” The winning team is announced at the conclusion of the evening.

The Syosset High School Forensics Society is once again ranked in the National Speech and Debate Association’s top 1 percent of schools nationwide. The honor is based on points and degrees earned in competitive and service-based activities. “I am proud to say that Syosset Forensics has a consistent national reputation for excellence,” said adviser Lydia Esslinger, whose 2015 team was recognized in the top 20 of 7,935 participating schools nationwide. Comprised of 175 students and 18 divisions, the society has been one of the most consistently successful co-curricular, interscholastic activity clubs at Syosset High School, with Long Island and New York State championships among their successes. They are constantly researching, seeking out new material to use and practicing to stay sharp. “I hope to model for students the importance of dedication and the rewards of work, the necessity to handle oneself with dignity and treat others fairly, and to win — and more importantly, to lose — gracefully,” said Esslinger, whose students have accumulated an impressive collection of hardware from the many tournaments held from September through June, some as far west as California. “What I always tell them is that the trophies will end up in a box in your basement, but how you shape yourself into the best you is on display for the rest of your life.” In the many years she has advised the club, Esslinger has seen some of her more active “Forensicals” go on to achieve great accomplishments in life. profile alumni of the society include National Security Council Director Prem Kumar, presidential speechwriter Jon Lovett, Tony Award-winning singer and actress Idina Menzel, novelist Meg Wolitzer, law professor and foreign policy columnist Rosa Brooks, and Florida Panthers owner/CEO and CNBC contributor Doug Cifu. More than 90 students qualified for the 2015 New York State finals, including state champions Betsy Cohen and Faisal Younus. The society as a team finished in the top two in the state, and there were a large number of finalists at the national level in various categories. “They learn to be confident about speaking in class,” said Esslinger. “They all read a lot and learn to write better. Most importantly, they all respect the power of words and learn to use the language ethically and effectively.”

Perplexity of Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums

and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.
