The Girl Scouts of Nassau County announced today that three successful women leaders will address attendees during the Golden Flight to Leadership Conference and reception. The Nassau BOCES Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) has named Regina Farinaccio as its new assistant coordinator. The PCHP, an early intervention program designed to help educationally atrisk preschoolers, has been serving Long Island families for more than 50 years. Ms. Farinaccio brings several years of educational

experience - in both public and private school settings - to her new position. Prior to coming to Nassau BOCES, Ms. Farinaccio was the Pre-K Community Services Director for the Port Washington school district, and also served as director of early childhood programs for New York State. An international educator, she has traveled to the Republic of Kenya numerous times during her career, where she has worked with teachers and school administrators to help improve the quality of education. In her role as Assistant Coordinator of the PCHP, Ms. Farinaccio will oversee the program’s early literacy specialists, who visit homes and work with parents to help them foster language development and pre-literacy skills in their children. In addition, she will coordinate services to

school districts under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. This year, Ms. Farinaccio will head up a pilot program that will apply many of the PCHP’s techniques to family-based childcare. “The Parent-Child Home Program prepares children for success in school, as well as in life,” Ms. Farinaccio says of the Nassau BOCES PCHP. “Research has shown that children who receive early intervention are fifty percent more likely than their peers to be prepared for kindergarten and thirty percent more likely to graduate from high school. It is my mission to help this program continue to grow. The more families served by the PCHP, the more successful students we will have in Nassau County.”

The Lost Holiday By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

Successful Homecoming Syosset High School culminated a week of spirited activities with its annual homecoming celebration, as community members endured rainy and chilly weather to cheer on the varsity football team. The Braves dominated the game from start to finish, defeating visiting Hicksville 32-0. Syosset’s Christian Skorka rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns, including scores of 56 and 44 yards. Leading up to homecoming, Spirit Week was held at Syosset High School, in which students

dressed in different themes each day of the week. During the week, the school held its annual walk-a-thon, dedicated to the Organization for Autism Research. Student Government kicked off the week of celebration with its annual carnival, as various student clubs and organizations manned booths to fundraise for student activities. Community members also enjoyed traditional carnival rides and games.

High school honor students across Long Island who choose to become physical therapists, occupational therapists, or physician assistants can get a head start on their college careers through a new Integrated Honors Track at Touro College School of Health Sciences (SHS) in Bay Shore. The program was created for those seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in the sciences and a commitment to pursuing an education in the PT, OT, or PA professions. “The Integrated Honors track is a fantastic opportunity for highachieving students to progress seamlessly into their chosen future,” said Art Sullivan, Interim Coordinator of the

Integrated Health Sciences Honors Track and Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Studies. Healthcare professions continue to be among the most desirable careers in the U.S. In a 2016 U.S. News survey on The Best Healthcare Jobs, Physician Assistant ranked #4 with a median salary of $95,820; Physical Therapist ranked #12 with a median salary of $82,390; and Occupational Therapist ranked #17 with a median salary of $78,810. In recent years, Touro’s pass rates for graduates in those departments have ranged from 90-100 percent. Dr. Louis Primavera, Dean for the SHS, noted the Integrated Honors Track helps young students secure their place in very prestigious healthcare

“These students have worked diligently in our research program, spending countless hours on their projects in order to put their best product out there.” Syosset was one of three Long Island high schools with two finalists among 10 Island finalists overall. Eric and Nikhil will present their research to judges from Carnegie Mellon University on Nov. 19 via videoconference. Winners are eligible for scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 and will be announced November 21st.

The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 11:00 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants as well as music for everyone to enjoy afterwards. The Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners, John F. Coumatos, John R. Sullivan and William J. Ellinger announced today that the District will once again invite elementary students of the Bethpage School District to participate in their Annual Bethpage Water Poster Contest. This year’s poster contest theme will be Overflowing Bethpage Pride, But Conserving Bethpage Water. “We are thrilled to have another opportunity to connect with the students of our community and work together to help protect our water supply,” said Commissioner William J. Ellinger. “We cannot wait to see how students combine what they are learning in school with their own creativity to create artistic and informative posters for

this year’s contest. We look forward to continue educating the children of Bethpage and instilling the importance of conserving this most precious resource.” Each year, the water conservation Poster Contest corresponds with the students’ science curriculum. The contest requires students to tackle the question, “How can I make a difference by simply conserving water?” All poster submissions will be judged by the Water District’s Board of Commissioners who are looking for students to creatively express ways they think their community should conserve water. Submissions that feature bottled water will not be considered in the judging process. The poster contest aims to encourage students to learn more about how they can make

a positive impact in their neighborhood. Each student will receive a certificate of participation and the posters that convey the best message will receive special recognition from the Board of Commissioners and featured at the Bethpage Public Library. The Water District will schedule an awards ceremony to formally announce winners, present prizes and publicly display winning entries. Submissions are suggested to be on 11” by 14” paper. The deadline for poster entries is Friday, May 5th, 2017. Scholar Artists Syosset High School’s Maxwell Herman, Brooke Shore and Bijia Wang have been named Scholar Artists by the Long Island Arts Alliance for their impressive portfolios. They are among just 18 students Islandwide to recived this honor for the 2016-2017 school year. Maxwell has been acting professionally since the age of six. A member of the school’s Association of Creative Thespians, he has participated in many school productions, most recently “Les Misérables.” He was named a finalist at the prestigious 2016

Roger Rees Awards and has an impressive resume of voiceover work, commercials and television specials as well as New York City professional theatre credits. Brooke is an a c c o m p l i s h e d contemporary dancer who has won regional and national recognition through first-place awards and scholarships. She was a recipient of Dance Magazine’s Dance Media Award and as a result won a merit scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet. Brooke is also an advanced dancer in the school’s program,

co-captains the nationally ranked varsity kickline team and trains in both modern dance and ballet at two of Long Island’s premier dance centers. Bijia, who began painting and drawing at the age of five, has had her works displayed at the Tilles Center, the Walt Whitman Historic Birthplace and the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. She has received All-County Artist honors since the seventh grade and is a member of National Art Honor Society who volunteers at the Nassau County Museum of Art.

Many of the students play major roles in the variety of entertaining productions held throughout the school year. While some of this year’s inductees

Three of this year’s current members/ inductees –Emily Krichmar, Lauren Kueper and Steven Kueper – received the “Honor Thespian” distinction for accumulating more than 600 hours of performing and studying theater.

the firefighters discussed the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes, establishing an escape route and creating a designated meeting location with family, as well as assisting firefighters when they arrive to the

scene. Following the presentation, students were able to examine the equipment on fire trucks and learn about the tools firefighters use to extinguish fires.

Unified In observance of National Bullying Prevention Month, A.P. Willits Elementary School in Syosset hosted its second annual Unity Day celebration on October

14th. Students wore red clothing as a display of their unity and pledged to stand up to bullying and treat one another with respect. A special assembly

was held at the end of the day and a banner was raised at the school to remind everyone that they are united in kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

Taking the Field The Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School marching band recently performed in the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival at Mitchell Field in Uniondale. Each year, the festival allows high school marching bands across Long Island to showcase

their “halftime show” normally performed at football games. This year, the band was led by Band Director Jerry Loeb and his assistants, Karen Bernstein; Glenn Chiarello; and Neil Wallowitz. Drum Majors Eric Kovel, Nicole Schwartzberg and Gaurav conducted the performance,

“A Blast From Our Past,” which featured the students’ favorite songs ever been performed by the JFK marching band. These included “Roll Over Beethoven,” by Chuck Berry; “Car Wash,” by Rose Royce; and the music from the movie, “The Mask.”
