The Marine Corps is a component of the Department of the Navy. It carries out global missions on both sea and shore, and serves as an expeditionary force. Marines are a rapid-reaction team and are usually the first boots on the ground in a conflict.

United States Coast Guard

The Coast Guard safeguards maritime interests through both civil and military missions. The Coast Guard operates around the world and in domestic waterways and ports.

United States Army National Guard

The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty. Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations. The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary. The U.S. Armed Forces are headed by the President of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Defense reports directly to the Commander-in-Chief. When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge. I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry. When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers. Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

landed is still burned on my brain. It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview. My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there. The ball was starting to roll. After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position. For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again. Time went by (ﬁve years to be exact), when I had an epiphany. Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

And if I created it once, I could create it again. Once again, I dipped into my bucket of fairy dust and declared that I was going to build a syndicated interview column from scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own. My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”? If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.

November’s Charity of the Month is:

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books! Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading.

They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location. You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%!

The generous spirit of Long Island was “illuminated” this Friday during the virtual fundraising event dubbed “One Island Giving Day.” To celebrate, Suffolk County lighted its H. Lee Dennison Building in blue during a ceremony yesterday afternoon to mark the single day, online fundraiser to benefit local nonprofit organizations that support the people who live, work and study in our communities. This is the second annual “One Island Giving Day” and is a legacy of the Amy and Horace Hagedorn Foundation that supported numerous Long Island nonprofits until it closed last year. In 2017, the effort raised over $325,000 to benefit more than 100 nonprofits that serve Nassau and Suffolk residents, with “One Island Giving Day” offering local nonprofits the unique opportunity to be supported by their neighbors across Long Island. This year, organizers set their sites on raising $1 million for the almost 100 registered local nonprofit organizations that assist fellow Long Islanders. The virtual event was hosted at oneislandgiving.org. This event was made possible through the bipartisan support of Suffolk County Legislators Kara Hahn, Leslie Kennedy and Susan Berland, who sponsored legislation last month to mark One Island Giving Day and illuminate the H. Lee Dennison Building to remind all county residents to support this initiative. Go back in time when young G.I.’s did extraordinary things for our country. The Armor Experience is a truly one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience what life was like for the soldiers who fought to protect our freedom during World War II. This living experience is offered by the Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Restoration Village in Old Bethpage, New York. Within the deep woods and country roads of this Nassau County preserve one can reset the time and date to dramatically re-visit

an era when our nineteen year old G.I. grandfathers were asked to liberate a world occupied by tyrants. You’ve heard the stories through family members, friends and through some extraordinarily preserved television and film footage. Now you can walk in their shoes. The Armor Experience is offered on select dates throughout the year depending upon the park’s calendar and upon availability of the park’s volunteer living historians. There are usually six planned experiences throughout the year

and attendees are given thrity days to coordinate their personal schedules. Children must be at least twelve years of age to participate. The Armor Experience offers a once in a lifetime opportunity as a team building exercise, an intergenerational experience, a family tribute to a remembered veteran, or a personal connection to our nation’s heritage. Safe Halloween For Kids Once again, Hicksville High School opened its doors after school to the district’s elementary students for a Safe Halloween celebration before October 31st, filled with crafts, games, music and plenty of treats! Students from all seven of the district’s elementary schools were invited to walk the hallways of Hicksville High School to trick or treat and enjoy the many fun activities taking place in

the classrooms and around the school, organized by student clubs. Youngsters could hunt for bones to assemble a skeleton, toss a spider onto a web, decorate cupcakes, bowl with pumpkins, put together spooky math puzzles, play Halloween Hopscotch and more. The hallways were decorated with cobwebs, spiderwebs, haystacks, pumpkins and other signature fall and Halloween favorites. Some classrooms were even

set up as not-too-spooky mazes, including a “Wizard of Oz”-themed walk. The student and staff hosts also dressed for the occasion, sporting some of the latest, as well as more traditional, Halloween costumes. Special thanks to all of the youngsters who attended and all of the student clubs and staff members who contributed to yet another Safe Halloween at Hicksville High School.

Learning About Public Service Third-, fourth- and fifthgraders at Dutch Lane Elementary School in Hicksville were recently treated to a visit by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, who provided some valuable insight into government and public service. Ms. Curran spoke about how government works and some of the important services that the county and other branches of

government provide to their constituents. She answered some very good questions from her inquisitive audience members on topics covering campaigning, civic responsibilities and debates, as well as how she became involved in government and what she likes about her job. Dutch Lane Principal Janine Rossi invited Ms. Curran to speak

to the students to provide her firsthand knowledge on how government works and also inspire interest in student government. Dutch Lane School is preparing to launch its inaugural student council this fall. Celebrating Constitution Day

South Grove’s annual celebration of Constitution Day took place on September 17th and included many enriching and engaging activities centered around understanding a constitution and how it impacts a community. In preparation for the celebration, second graders wrote personal constitutions that highlighted their own values, which they “aged” by rubbing with tea bags. Music teachers visited second-grade classrooms to teach students the Preamble to the Constitution in song. Students enjoyed the musical slant to their social studies curriculum. South Grove also hosted its eighth annual Preamble Challenge, in which

students in grades two through five were invited to memorize the Preamble to the United States Constitution. Over 30 students were successful in reciting the Preamble from memory! In the culminating event, the entire school came together for a special assembly. The South Grove character education program was kicked off and this year’s Student Council was formally installed with the help of the Color Guard, Student Council Advisors, Principal Mi Jung An and the Honorable Gina M. Lopez-Summa, a judge and proud South Grove parent. A short skit performed by students and faculty illustrated why the Constitution was first created, and included brief appearances by “George

Washington,” “Ben Franklin,” and an extra special guest, Grover, the school’s mascot. After the Student Council representatives took their oath of office, the entire student body and faculty also took an oath to South Grove. Everyone will be signing over-sized constitutions as a visible reminder of their commitment, which reads as follows: We the people of South Grove School, in order to form a more perfect community, establish a respectful environment, ensure individual responsibility, and promote the general safety and well-being of ALL citizens, do enact and establish this Constitution for South Grove School: Be respectful and Be responsible.

Cystic Fibrosis Phone-A-Thon Syosset High School students called for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis on October 9th and 10th. Students made phone calls to community members to request donations for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Approximately 90 students volunteered their time over two nights. After completing a brief training and hearing from a speaker living with Cystic Fibrosis, students enjoyed a buffet dinner generously donated by local merchants including Frank’s Gourmet Pizza and Restaurant, Christina’s

Epicure, Woodbury Country Deli, Gabby’s Gourmet Bagelatessen, Park’s Happy Farm, Messina Market, Woodbury Pizza, Butera’s, Ben’s Deli, and Iavarone Bros. Student Government Chairs Jordan Rosenberg and Susanna Hur organized the event under the direction of Student Government Advisers Rich Cafiero and Dale Iovine and Syosset resident Ilene Zelniker. “Each time someone gave a contribution, we celebrated and congratulated one another. Everyone had an

amazing time.” remarked Jordan and Susanna in a joint statement about the event. About 1,000 new cases of Cystic Fibrosis are diagnosed each year, a rare genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to find a cure for this devastating disease. “Rocking the Bald” Two altruistic students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech donated their time and talent to support “Rocking the Bald” at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, part of Northwell Health. The event garnered $17,000 for pediatric cancer research. Matthew Gimondo from the North Shore CSD and Jeremy Mestizo of the Uniondale UFSD, both of whom study Barbering at Barry Tech, shaved the heads of more than 20 brave Samaritans to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation during this first-time fundraiser for the

children’s medical center. St. Baldrick’s is dedicated to funding pediatric cancer research in an ongoing effort to make the greatest impact for children with cancer. How Many Seeds are in a Pumpkin? Bright orange pumpkins sat on desks in David Reilly’s first-grade classroom at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in the Bellmore School District as students used their mathematical and writing

skills to perform a number of autumn-themed tasks. After reading various fiction and nonfiction books about pumpkins, the students wrote down adjectives to describe their gourds to reflect on

their size, shape and color. They also wrote down estimates on how many seeds Mr. Reilly’s pumpkin contained, carving open the top and digging out the seeds with their hands.

East Meadow Joins in Unity Students and staff in the East Meadow School District dressed in orange on Oct. 17 and joined together in a stance against bullying as they celebrated Unity Day. At W.T. Clarke Middle School, there was an assembly for each of the sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade classes throughout the day. Clarke Middle School is partnering with Sandy Hook Promise to take part in the “Start with Hello” initiative, which creates a culture

of inclusion by teaching students skills for reaching out to and including those who may be dealing with social isolation. The culminating activity of Unity Day included every student, from all nine of the district’s buildings, signing their names on large paper flowers, signifying their pledge to say no to bullying and yes to kindness. The flowers were then sent to the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center, where Art Honor Society students from East Meadow

High School and W.T. Clarke High School came together with PTA Council members to create a “One East Meadow” mural. This “garden” mural will be proudly displayed in the conference room through the end of the year. Students at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District treated children from the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in the Bellmore School District to an indoor Halloween festival on October 25th. Little visitors — future Cougars — traipsed the decorated halls in costume, tricked or treated, crafted and even turned the teens

into mummies using toilet paper. “This event has been very helpful in fostering growth in our school community and bringing elementary school students and families to their future high school,” said Principal Gerard Owenburg. Fun was cooking in the C.H.A.M.P. (Culinary and Hospitality Applied Management Program) kitchen, as culinary arts

students prepped cupcakes for decorating and assisted with indulgent sprinkle applications. From monster making crafts and pumpkin decorating to carnival style games and face painting, the high schoolers were bright-eyed and bushytailed all afternoon, especially football player Liam Orr who dressed as a giant inflatable unicorn.

Growing Healthy Decisions During Red Ribbon Week, John F. Kennedy Middle School and Bethpage High School students visited all three elementary schools to educate the younger students on how to make healthy decisions. During JFK students’ visit to Kramer Lane on Wednesday and high school SADD members’ trips to Charles Campagne

and Central Boulevard elementary schools on Thursday and Friday, respectively, the peer educators led visual presentations to spark conversations on how to maintain healthy habits.
