Lumiere Ballet is celebrating its 20th anniversary since its founding in 1994. Featuring award winning students and professional dancers, the Nutcracker performances will be held at the Maguire Theater at SUNY College in Old Westbury, December 20th at 7 p.m. and December 22nd at 2 p.m. Lumiere Ballet’s Nutcracker follows the original Tchaikovsky, Petipa, Ivanov creation which was performed in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892. The magic of the music, the waltzing snowflakes, and the land of the sweets will give joy and inspiration to children of all ages. Lumière Ballet encompasses a year round professional training program, summer intensive studies, and a performing company which presents fine works from theclassical, romantic, and the Lumiere Ballet’s original repertoire. The company performs throughout Long Islandand New York City. Svetlana Caton - Founder and Artistic CoDirector of Lumière Ballet. Her background and training is from the great heritage of the Russian Ballet. At the age of 12, her participation in the prestigious Concours de Danse in Paris brought a scholarship offer at the school of the Paris Opera as well as an invitation to study with the legendary stars of the Maryinsky Imperial Ballet; Olga Preobrajenska, Liubov Egorova and Mathilda Ksenschinska. She performed professionally in Europe and in the USA and
has been teaching for 30 years. Featuring her qualified students and professional dancers, she creates original story ballets, (Hansel and Gretel, Snow Maiden, the Little Prince) and stages the great Classics (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker and more) She is a graduate

after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,
well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So

Approximately 1,200 seventh-grade students from 35 Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Rockville
Centre participated in the Fifth Annual Technology Days at Adventureland in Farmingdale on Wednesday the 15th and
Friday the 24th of October. Technology Days combine work and play by giving each attendee a workbook with learning activities connected to 12 rides. These activities direct students to study the rides and observe engineering design principles such as structure, safety, and accessibility. Participating students make notes on their observations and use problem-solving skills to complete workbook activities associated with each ride.
Pre-School Open House Dates Set Town of Oyster Bay residents who are looking for a pre-school program for their children are invited to attend an open house at one of the Town’s two pre-schools, located in Woodbury at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Center and in Massapequa at Marjorie R. Celebrating Fall Recently, first graders at Syosset’s Village School went on a field trip to F&W Schmitt Family Farm in Melville. The trip kicked off with a wagon-drawn tractor ride to the farm field where they learned about the planting, care, and picking of green beans
and radishes; they even got to take some of the veggies home! From here, it was off to the pumpkin patch. The students learned about the stages of a pumpkin’s life cycle, from tiny seed to small green pumpkin to “adult” orange pumpkins
like the ones they were able to pick from the patch and keep. A walk through the corn fields was followed by some time to enjoy the farm’s playground. It was an informative and fun-filled fall trip for all who attended!

Learning A Lesson Scott Starkey, a fifthgrade teacher at East Street Elementary School in the Hicksville School District, recently hosted a special lesson about antibullying. Starkey, who has authored three books on anti-bullying, spoke to students about ways to overcome bullying and the importance of being considerate and compassionate. Students participated in a text-
analysis of one of the books and in role-playing activities. The bullying-prevention workshop is part of the school’s ongoing character education. On the first Wednesday of each month, a book related to a lesson in character education is read to every class. Instead of written homework that evening, a family activity designed to reinforce virtues discussed in the book is assigned.

The Holy Trinity Class of 2014 re-instated the class gift tradition by raising funds to install an Our Lady of Fatima Grotto. The grotto was dedicated on the morning of the school’s homecoming in appreciation of their former chaplain, Fr. Joseph Fitzgerald, who spearheaded the project. Cory Robinson of Bethpage, the Class of 2014 president, led his class to raise nearly $9,000 to purchase the materials for the project. The labor was also donated by Joe Pontes of Westbury, who works as a contractor and has two children currently attending Holy Trinity. Cory Robinson now attends Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT and was very happy to be able to return to see the completed project and to attend the
dedication. “It was very emotional, but seeing Giovanni’s family made it all worthwhile.” Giovanni’s mother, Georgina Cipriano, was extremely grateful to the school and the Class of 2014. “It was just amazing that in the short time that he was here that they embraced him with so much love and they showed him how wonderful everyone could be,” she said. “That love is what it’s all about.”

The United States Marines Corps and Dream Event Planning announced the launch of the new L.I. Weddings for Warriors program at the Coral House in Baldwin. The program will assist those in the armed services with making special arrangements for displaced couples while a service man or woman is overseas in places like Afghanistan. They will volunteer on Long Island bases, or other military facilities, in preparing weddings and vow renewals. “Unfortunately, because
of deployments, you do not always know when duty will call. Couples may be pulled from one another with little time to plan an entire wedding. We want to thank the brave men and women that fight tirelessly to keep us safe and give them a dream wedding,” said Adam Panetta, Executive Vice President, Dream Event Planning. The Weddings for Warriors project was started in 2009 in Savannah, Georgia by the Savannah Wedding Tourism Council. The event provided wedding ceremonies and
vow renewals to active US Military personnel. According to the Weddings for Warriors website, “The project was conceived as a way of saying a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to active duty military personnel in Savannah and the Low Country,” said Becky Byous, Executive Director for the Project. The Long Island Weddings for Warriors program will closely mirror that of the Savannah, GA program with events being held at the Coral House in Baldwin.
