Calming the Chaos By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take

that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan

is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. I’m still trying. ‘Til then, breath in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…

Venturing Crew 2162 knows how to have fun and help the community at the same time! The crew is a part of the Boy Scouts of America that is a co-ed group from the ages of 14-21 years old. Crew 2162 specializes in “giving back.” Every month, they help make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless on Long Island at St. James RC Church in Seaford. This October, being the month of spooks, goblins and skeletons, they volunteered two weekends to work the “Haunted Barn” for Horseability in the SUNY Old Westbury Campus. They participated by being scary clowns, spooky skeleton and creatures of the night. Each night, they dedicated 5-6 hours to scare, spook and entertain the visitors. “It is a wonderful experience for these teenagers to have. They are learning that in a society of take, take, and take to give back in service to organizations in need. Community service and “giving back” does not have to be boring and mundane,” states Maureen Fox, the crew advisor. “They have performed service for all different organizations including wrapping presents for cancer kids at Christmas, performing in costume at Holiday parties for disabled children as well as helping at numerous walks – such as the Light the Night walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “ The crew also does other social activities like

Bethpage Water District (BWD) Board of Commissioners, Chairman William J. Ellinger, Treasurer John R. Sullivan, Secretary Gary S. Bretton and Secretary to the Board Sal Greco, recently invited local students to tour the district’s fourth plant on Sophia Street in Bethpage. Throughout the tour, Superintendent Michael Boufis and Senior Water Plant Operator Peter Schimmel detailed the path water takes before reaching faucets, answering Plainedge Middle School students’ questions about the District’s defenses against the Northrop Grumman plume and ensuring the water is safe to drink. “We are excited that schools are including water education into their curriculum,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman

William J. Ellinger. “It is important for students to understand where their water comes from and how it is treated to know their water is safe to drink.” The BWD team led students throughout the plant to teach them how a well is drilled, where the water comes from and how it is treated before entering homes. The tour allowed students to observe carbon used in the carbon filtration system and the filters used in air stripping towers. The students track the Northrop Grumman plume in class and were able to visualize its boundaries in addition to the affect it has on the District’s service during the tour. “These tours offer the unique opportunity to meet real professionals who can bring their lessons to life,” said

Board of Commissioners Treasurer John R. Sullivan. “Students are able to ask their questions to experts in the field.” Plant number four at Sophia Street was originally built in 1961 and was rehabilitated in 2010. The students toured two wells that pump water at a capacity of 1,400 gallons each per minute for a total of 4 million gallons of water a day. “It is important for our youth to be aware of changes, improvements and even potential threats tour water supply,” said Board of Commissioners Secretary Gary S. Bretton. “By educating our students about their water supply, we give them the power to find new solutions and uncover the future of Long Island’s water supply.”

Even an unseasonable cold breeze could not damper the school spirit and community pride on display at Hicksville High School’s Homecoming on October 17th. other attractions. Faculty members reconnected with past and present students, and students of all ages reveled in the district’s slate of fun for everyone. A half-hour before the big game, the Hicksville cheerleaders, the Starlets, the marching band and representatives from the Classes of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 showed their school spirit during a parade that started around the perimeter of the fair and culminated on the track adjacent to the football field. Prior to kickoff, the Comets were introduced to an enthusiastic home crowd that filled the bleachers to capacity. At halftime, the Starlets and

marching band took the field and showcased their talents to perfection, and seniors Gabriella Yao and Eishan Singh were crowned Homecoming queen and king. The Comets played a great game filled with passion and energy, but eventually fell short to the Tigers. Although the Comets did not win, their efforts, along with the masterful performances of all students in the district’s stellar performing arts and music programs, gave the community countless reasons to smile.

Coming Together Syosset High School culminated a week of spirited activities with its annual homecoming celebration, as community members braved a chilly Saturday afternoon on October 17th to enjoy a carnival, some wonderful halftime performances and their Long Island champion varsity Braves football team. The week began with the annual walkathon along the campus of Syosset High School, which resulted in students and staff raising more than $2,600 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Later in the week, the gymnasium hosted a health fair, where more than 50 stations – many operated by students – provided guests with tips on leading a healthy lifestyle. On Friday, the high school football field was abuzz with exuberant cheers from the student body as the pep rally took center stage. This

year’s event brought a new twist, with relay races complementing the traditional introductions and fanfare. Later that afternoon, the annual carnival kicked off. Student government organized the carnival and various student clubs and organizations manned booths to fundraise for student activities at the high school. The carnival was open to the public through Sunday. The following day, the Braves took on the East Meadow High School Jets. The visitors led 21-7 at the half before the hosts came storming back with three consecutive touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. Syosset’s Christian Skorka caught a 30-yard pass from quarterback Will Hogan with just over two minutes left in the game to put the Braves ahead 28-21, before East Meadow rallied for a late touchdown of their own to pull off a last-

minute victory. Despite the loss, Syosset remains in playoff contention with a 3-2 Nassau I conference record (3-3 overall). Halftime included performances by the Syosset varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders, band, color guard and kickline. Board of Education members joined other members of the school community in volunteering their time to man the food and apparel concessions. A variety of student clubs also ran tables at the carnival, many raising funds for student activities. The Syosset HS Association of Creative Thespians performed their annual Bard-aThon, reciting the works of William Shakespeare throughout the day while Syosset Robotics Club held a demonstration of two of its robots. BETHPAGE STREET FAIR - The Bethpage Fire Department Street Fair, hosted by Engine Company 5, was recently held. This Street Fair brought the community together for free music, plenty of food, rides, games and free pony rides for a day that was fun for all ages.

role of individual science researcher to help make the world a better place.” “As a researcher, it’s so nice to be acknowledged for the work that you put in,” said Sarah. “You are not just a high school student in a lab setting. You are trying to solve the problems that plague humanity. It’s such an honor to be involved in this type of work.” Regional finalists, who were selected from 466 semifinalists, receive $1,000 each. They will present their projects remotely via Web conferencing and other digital means on November 21st to judges at one of six

prestigious research universities across the country, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. National finalists will be identified through that process and compete in December at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Six individuals and six teams will win scholarship awards ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. There were 1,781 applicants in this year’s competition. Five Semifinalists Along with Sarah and Kunal, Syosset High School senior Robert Klyner and juniors Rahul Chaudhry and Sahil Chaudhry made it to the regional semifinalist round in the competition.

Working as a team at Stony Brook University, Rahul and Sahil tackled the problem of overactive platelets and excessive blood clotting by creating an algorithm to determine platelet shape, and based upon that information could predict the best medication for doctors to prescribe. This algorithm is more effective than current methods, which typically take two to three months to complete. Robert conducted his research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, analyzing the DNA of three patients with epilepsy. Specifically, he looked at de novo mutations, which are spontaneous mutations not affecting other members of a family. He not only found a way of identifying de novo mutations, but also discovered a potential link in the DNA sequence to the disease. All of the students studied under the tutelage of Syosset High School research facilitator Veronica Ade. “It’s a privilege to work with such talented young minds, but what people sometimes don’t realize is the amount of hard work that goes into these projects, including the presentation,” said Ade. “Every one of these students has earned this honor. Whether it’s discovering new methodologies to treat illnesses or developing more efficient and effective ways to power society, their work is truly groundbreaking and we should all be proud of them. We congratulate our five finalists and wish Sarah and Kunal the best as they move forward in the competition.” The Siemens Foundation established the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology in 1999. The competition seeks to promote excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects. Animal Education

To supplement their classroom lessons about different types of animals, students in Lara Bodt’s fourth-grade class at East Street Elementary School rolled up their sleeves for a truly hands-on experience. In small groups, students had the opportunity to

directly examine the features of animal classes such as reptiles and amphibians. Their analyses included those of a tiger rug that was comprised of its actual fur and head, the pattern of a snake’s skin, the texture of a crocodile’s body, and the size of a

Syosset High School is proud to announce that seniors Sarah Lee and Kunal Shah have been named regional finalists in the Siemens Competition for Math, Science and Technology. Sarah and Kunal are among the school’s five student researchers who achieved semifinalist status in the nation’s premier science research competition for high school students. As finalists, they will present their research to a Siemens panel of judges on November 21st to determine whether they advance to the national finals in Washington, D.C., in December. Sarah and Kunal both conducted their research at Stony Brook University. They are among just 15 finalists from Long Island who will vie for one of five national individual finalist spots and five team finalist spots from each region. Sarah researched alternative ways to block pain receptors in the body. She studied the chemistry of natural pain blockers and their attachment to various cell receptors and found that there were several compounds that could block cell receptors as a novel and effective way to relieve pain while avoiding many of the side effects and consequences associated with over-the-counter medications. Kunal, who worked as part of a team with two students from different high schools, discovered a method to make fuel cells more efficient by modifying current hydrogen fuel cells with the addition of graphene oxide nanoparticles. His research partners are Brian Rhee of Half Hollow Hills East and Roshan Patel from Ward Melville. Sarah worked independently. “I have been studying math and science throughout high school and have really developed a passion over the years not just based on research, but on fundamental science and what we learn in classes,” said Kunal, who turned his focus toward chemistry after taking an honors chemistry class in the 10th grade. “I believe it’s important that as many people as possible pursue the

A JetBlue getaway with two round trip tickets was raffled off on October 13th. Gary LaFemina, who works in the Manhasset Schools, is the winner of the raffle. The donation was provided to Manhasset SEPTA by the DiOrio and the Romano

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY - The Ground Breaking Ceremony to begin construction for a new Challenger Baseball Field at Fern Place School in Plainview was recently held.
