yosset third grade Brownie Troop 3450 learned about the various stages of gardening at the farm on Split Rock Road during the spring, summer and fall harvest seasons. The girls initially planted tomatoes, green beans, potatoes and peppers. They returned weeks later to help weed and pick ripe vegetables, including squash and broccoli. Finally, for the recent fall harvest, the girls gathered and picked more vegetables like potatoes and eggplant.

Tilles Center for the Performing Arts is the premier venue for the performing arts on Long Island, and on Saturday evening, October 22nd, it celebrated its 36th anniversary with its Annual Gala. The event was a benefit in honor of Lisa and Rob Arning. The multi-phased evening began with a cocktail reception followed
by dinner in the beautiful Tilles Center Atrium in which, the almost two hundred guests, dined to the music accordionist Dominic Karcic and vocalist Cheryl Spielman. Their forty-five minute set included music from Broadway with selections that included composers Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, John Kander,
Jerome Kern and Richard Rodgers. After dinner entertainment in the main concert hall included the New York Pops Orchestra (under the direction of Steven Reineke), Brian d’Arcy James and Megan Hilty which was then was followed by a cabaret performance with Carole J. Bufford in the Tilles Center Atrium.
Program Set to Expand The Nassau BOCES Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) is currently working to expand its programs into more Long Island communities. The PCHP, an early intervention program designed to help educationally at-risk preschoolers, transforms the home into a child’s first classroom. This free family literacy program has been serving Long Island families for more than 50 years. Research has shown that children who receive early intervention are 50 percent more likely to be ready for kindergarten than their peers and are 30 percent more likely to graduate from high school. Trained early literacy specialists visit the home twice a week and work
with parents to help them become their child’s first teacher. Home visitors teach parents to foster language development and pre-literacy skills in their children through talking, reading and playing. Families receive a new book or educational toy every week to help enhance learning. By the end of the two-year program, students are fully prepared to enter preschool. “The Parent-Child Home Program prepares young children for success in school, as well as in life,” said Assistant Coordinator Regina Farinaccio. “The program supports a closer relationship between parent and child, and helps parents to develop skills that ensure school readiness, which can have profound impacts
on children’s academic performance.” To be eligible, families must have a child who will be two years old by December 1, 2016. The parent or primary caregiver must be available for two 30-minute home visits every week and be willing to help prepare his or her child for school. Families must reside in eligible school districts, or register for a waiting list in other communities. The program is currently available in English and Spanish; other languages may soon be available. Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t
sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these
same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.
You have Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who wants to continue with the current path we are on of big government being involved in many aspects of our lives. The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. No matter who you support, nobody condones distasteful words spoken or irresponsible and potentially criminal actions taken by either candidate - and I think you know what and who I am talking about in each instance! Putting all this aside, you have a simple choice to make: Trump - who has earned money, power and fame and wants to help our country restabilize and prosper
once again. He wants to cut government waste, repeal and replace the affordable healthcare act, rebuild and properly care for our military, and secure our borders for everyone’s safety. Clinton - who also has money, power and fame, offers us four more years of what we now have; continuing the affordable healthcare act, big government, big government spending and open borders for a global society. So...to anyone who is still undecided, I ask you - How? The two choices you have could not be more different! Don’t allow the onslaught of the mainstream media to confuse you. Trust your GUT, and go out on November 8th and Vote It!

Amidst the fall season, the Bowling Elementary School PTA in the East Meadow School District held a pumpkin patch festival for kindergartners to pick and decorate their own pumpkins. Gathered eagerly on
the front lawn, the young students ran toward scattered pumpkins, picking their favorites from a wide selection. Afterward, they took part in photo opportunities with bales of hay and scarecrow face cutouts.
The festivities wound down in the all-purpose room, where the students and their parents enjoyed refreshments and decorated their pumpkins with Halloween themedstickers and pipe cleaners.

Saying Thanks to the BOE As part of an annual tradition at Hicksville Public School District, student representatives from each school expressed their gratitude for the members of the board of education and all of their hard work and dedication throughout the year. The special ceremony was held in honor of Board Appreciation Month at its October meeting. With their principals also in attendance, students from each elementary school personally presented each board member with a gift, and a student from the middle and high schools delivered heartfelt speeches expressing their
own appreciation. The ceremony served as a forum for the students to collectively offer tokens of appreciation for the members of the board of education on behalf of the district.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT - Patrick Blaskey recently completed his Eagle Scout Project at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter this past June. The shelter wanted 15 window boxes with beautiful flowers to spruce up the front of the building. Syosset third grade Brownie Troop 3450 (Village Elementary School) learned about the various stages of gardening at the Farm on Split Rock Road during the spring, summer and fall harvest seasons. The girls initially planted tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, peppers and more. They returned
weeks later to help weed and pick ripe vegetables including squash and broccoli. Finally, for the recent fall harvest the girls gathered and picked more vegetables (potatoes, eggplant). They also made scarecrows, painted paper mache’ pumpkins and learned how to save dry seeds from string beans and marigolds to plant
next spring. They learned a lot at the farm and are grateful to have a local treasure like this nearby. How wonderful that all the food grown at the farm is donated to various Long Island food banks. Thank you to host Amanda Roberts. Can’t wait to start planting next spring!

Technology Day
Over 2,400 middle school students from across Long Island recently enjoyed the beautiful fall weather at Technology Day 2016 at Adventureland in Farmingdale. Joe Fili, the originator of the hands-on learning event said that in 2016 Technology Day would be attended by more than 2,400 students representing 50 schools. The event, which started in 2001, has been a STEM event since before the term STEM was even popularized. STEM, which is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math, is the practical application of the concepts middle school students are learning in their classes. Technology day challenges students to use the skills they learn in multiple classes, and apply those skills to complete a workbook with a variety of questions about ride design and operation. Each student is given a workbook which they complete in teams. Their teachers have had preevent training on to help them connect the park activities to the classroom activities. “The park is pretty
unique on Technology Day,” said Emily Guarnieri, Technology Director for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. “There are students working in small groups everywhere you look, measuring, triangulating height and exploring engineering design principles such as structure, safety, and accessibility,” Guarnieri continued. The schools of the Diocese of Rockville Centre are the largest group participating in the event, representing 37 of the 50 participating schools.
Photography Exhibitions Open From November 19th to March 5th, 2017, all of Nassau County Museum of Art’s galleries are devoted to the art of photography. On view in the Main Galleries on the first floor are two exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts (KIA), Kalamazoo, Michigan: Ansel Adams: Sight and Feeling and Light Works: 100 Years of Photos. On view in the Second Floor Galleries is New Photos: Long Island Collects, important photographic works of the last half century from private Long Island art collections. Ansel Adams: Sight and Feeling Ansel Adams’ ability to create photographs with a remarkable range and subtlety of tones is legendary. Yet for all his technical mastery, Adams recognized that what made a compelling photograph was far more elusive. This exhibition of Adams’ photographs from the KIA collection suggests how his intuitive and emotional response to the landscape resulted in powerful and enduring photographs. Light Works: 100 Years of Photos From Eadweard Muybridge’s 19thcentury photographic studies of animal locomotion to Richard Misrach’s contemporary chromogenic prints, this exhibition spans the history of photography. Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Curtis, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Walker Evans, Henri
Cartier-Bresson and many other celebrated photographers comprise this survey of photography processes and subjects from 1873 to 2000. New Photos: Long Island Collects New Photos: Long Island Collects focuses on significant photographic works created from the 1960s through the present day. Historically, photography has been used as a documentary medium to tell a story, Using the malleable medium of the photograph, artists have often enhanced or staged their works to convey a story, create emotion, or otherwise touch the viewer in a significant manner. This exhibition presents a survey of photographic works from private collectors. Among the artists included in New Photos: Long Island Collects are John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Robert Mapplethorpe, Vic Muniz, Cindy Sherman and William Wegman, among many others. The Museum is offering a variety of public programs to amplify the experience of visiting these three exhibitions. Two films are screening daily: Stryker’s America: Photographing the Great Depression and Cartier-Bresson’s Century. Three Brown Bag Lectures illuminate the art and the artists included in these exhibitions. Other public programs are inspired by the exhibitions: Sketching in the Galleries, and The River, a concert performed by the musical ensemble ETHEL. The
Museum’s family programs from November 19th to March 5th similarly draw inspiration from the exhibitions: Neiman Marcus Family Sundays, February Break for Art and two Super Family Sunday offerings, Winter Wonderland and Merrynaking in a Gold Coast Mansion. Grant Received Options for Community Living, Inc. is pleased to announce that they have received a $25,000 grant from the M•A•C AIDS Fund. Options has developed programs that provide housing assistance and long-term rental housing for individuals and families in response to the critical need for affordable housing for persons living with HIV/AIDS on Long Island. Options currently operates 68 units across Long Island that provide safe, affordable housing to Long Islanders who were formerly homeless or inadequately housed.
Options requested program support from the M•A•C AIDS Fund to supplement funding for housing case management services. These services are vital to evaluate home safety; to assist tenants with budgeting and to provide referrals for health services as needed. The mission of the M·A·C AIDS Fund is to serve all people affected by HIV and AIDS. Their goal is: “to partner with the bold, the visionary and the brave who confront the epidemic in countries and communities where people are most neglected, off the radar and at
highest risk. M A C funds innovative programs that deal directly with the most marginalized, stigmatized and under-heard victims.” Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living, Inc., is grateful for the M·A·C AIDS Fund support. “Our housing program has allowed us to keep families together and to ensure that individuals have safe, affordable housing where they can flourish. This generous award from the M•A•C AIDS Fund will assist greatly as we carry out our mission,” she stated.

The Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act of 2008 require that health insurance carriers meet Federal coverage standards on par with other medical benefits. Network adequacy refers to a health insurance carrier’s requirement to provide enrollees with timely access to a sufficient number of providers included in their benefit contract. Project Access will investigate the problem of families gaining timely and affordable mental health and addictions care, identify obstacles to accessing timely care, and disseminate findings to activate change. These activities will be executed
by a variety of prominent stakeholders who have come together to form the Project Access Planning Committee. Together with researchers from the LIU-C.W. Post School of Social Work, the Committee will identify the target population for the study and then create two surveys: one for families and one for service providers. The data will be analyzed and a report generated on the findings. The Committee will develop a plan for disseminating the results to the public to increase knowledge as well as to inform advocacy efforts around mental health parity and network adequacy.

North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center has received funding from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation to pilot an exciting new initiative entitled Project Access. The Nassau BOCES Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) is currently working to expand its programs into more Long Island communities. The PCHP, an early intervention program designed to help educationally at-risk preschoolers, transforms the home into a child’s first classroom. This free family literacy program has been serving Long Island families for more than 50 years. Research has shown that children who receive early intervention are 50 percent more likely to be ready for kindergarten than their peers and are 30 percent more likely to graduate from high school.
