The Simple Things As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time

with family and friends, to gather over food and reminisce, and to make new memories along the way. Looking through old photo albums, the one thing that resonates through the years is the sense of togetherness that always existed; so strong you can practically see it reverberating off the pages. This is a feeling that one can only hope to recapture with each passing year. All the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, the wrapping… what is it for, if not that moment when everyone comes together to enjoy one another’s company. It’s the little things that matter - a special greeting card with a thoughtful inscription, remembering someone’s favorite type of dessert, a lovingly wrapped gift topped with a beautiful bow. The rest, as they say, is

Syosset High School celebrated homecoming/ Spirit Week 2017 in grand fashion, as six days of school spirit and thoughtfulness culminated with a weekend highlighted by a funfilled family carnival and a victory on the football field. The annual Student Government Carnival raised money and awareness for numerous student clubs. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds raised during the three-day weekend event was donated to hurricane relief efforts. The week kicked off with the annual student and

staff walkathon at Syosset High School, which raised funds for the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. Students also participated in and helped run the annual Health Fair held in the school gymnasium. Later in the week, students donned school colors and Syosset wear to show their support for the school community and its athletic teams and student-based organizations. The week ended with the annual pep rally to cheer the fall athletic teams, which served as the appetizer for

Saturday’s varsity football game vs. East Meadow. On the gridiron, the Syosset Braves built a 27-7 halftime lead on the strength of three Alex Berland touchdown passes and a fumble return by the defense. Alex finished the day with 229 yards passing and four touchdown passes overall. Thomas Dolciotta, who ran for 46 yards, scored two of the Syosset touchdowns, one on a pass from Alex and another on the ground. The Braves defense held off a secondhalf East Meadow scoring surge for a 39-28 victory. The Syosset High School band, cheerleaders and kickline dancers entertained the audience and provided support for the home team throughout the game, with the latter two groups providing special halftime performances. The Syosset PTSA ran the concession barn, with proceeds benefitting student programs districtwide.

November Charity of the Month:

MAUREEN’S HAVEN!

Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.

The host facilities and supporting organizations provide not just a place for the homeless to sleep, but a nutritious dinner, breakfast and a packed meal to go. They provide support by embracing the values of human dignity, respect, service, compassion, teamwork, diversity and love. Recognizing the need for consistent support and services for the homeless in the region, Maureen’s Haven opened a day center in Riverhead to provide respite from the cold and year-round services for this vulnerable and growing population. The day center is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered

a continuum of care that has helped individuals in rebuilding their lives. After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. I’m sure you’ve heard that water is good for you, but why is that? What does it do for us? That’s what I want to share with you... Water makes up the majority of our weight. The average adult body is made up of 50%-65% water. Our bodies can’t store this water, so we need to replenish it frequently. Before, when I wasn’t at my healthiest, I didn’t drink water often. Kellie Cook McLaurin was recently named Principal of Nassau BOCES Specialized Schools, which includes the agency’s Twilight Alternative High School in the BellmoreMerrick CHSD. The veteran educator brings nearly 25 years of experience to the position. At the top of Ms. Cook McLaurin’s to-do list as a school leader is to further improve and expand the opportunities that students have to succeed. This goes beyond achieving a high school diploma or equivalency; it also means developing competitive career skills, instilling a sense of social equity, and empowering students to advocate for themselves,

both academically and socially. “I’ve fallen completely in love with the mission behind the work Nassau BOCES is doing with this student population,” said Ms. Cook McLaurin, who believes correcting misconceptions about students served by alternative educational programs is key to helping them succeed. “We cannot and will not leave these students for last.” Ms. Cook McLaurin hopes ultimately to double the number of programs available to students through Specialized Schools. She sees this as a very realistic goal, achievable through collaboration

among educators. “I work with people who are just as passionate as I am,” said Ms. Cook McLaurin, who describes herself as a Thought Partner. “Their role is every bit as important as that of principal. It is my job to help them realize the mission and vision they have for their students.” Ms. Cook McLaurin began her career teaching English in the New York City school system. She served as an English teacher for eight years before becoming a Subject Matter Specialist for the Hempstead school district. From there, she moved into a leadership role as Assistant Principal of the George Meany School in

the Bronx. In 2010, she became the Founding Principal of New Hope Academy Charter School in Brooklyn. In 2015, she came to Nassau BOCES in the capacity of Assistant Principal for Specialized High School Programs and before long was groomed for her current role. Ms. Cook McLaurin has served at the helm of a number of educational and child-centered organizations, including: Cypress Hills Child Care Corporation, as Board President; East New York Urban Youth Corps, as Director; and East New York Beacon Program, as Coordinator. She has also served as Instructor for Adelphi

University and the City University of New York, as well as Curriculum Writer for New York University. She is a member of the National Alternative Education Association, the Oxford University Roundtable, the National Principals Leadership Institute, New York Historical Society Fellowship, and the Board of Directors of the UMOJA Network for Young Men. Ms. Cook McLaurin holds a bachelor’s degree from Virginia State University and two master’s degrees from Adelphi University — the first in secondary education and the second in administration and supervision in technology. She is currently pursuing

a doctorate of education in administrative and instructional leadership at St. John’s University. “Kellie is all about students and how best to help them succeed,” said Judith Hynes, Executive Manager of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “Her approach is student-centered and she is focused on giving them the support they need to meet and exceed expectations. In life he was a loving husband of Kristin, his wife of 20 years. Joe became a dad for the first time in April 2006, never having had the opportunity to hold little Lauren Olivia in his arms. After earning a degree in business management he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant from UNCC Charlotte, and in the ensuing years he earned his masters in education from Troy State University. An elite athlete, he was a marathon-runner, an ultramarathon runner, a crosscountry skier, mountain biker, and kayaker. He also was a proud supporter of the arts and recognized how it nurtured the mind and the soul.

AP Scholars The Hicksville Public School District is proud to announce that 132 students at Hicksville High School have earned the designation of Advanced Placement Scholar from the College Board due to their outstanding achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement exams. In recognition of October as National Bullying Prevention Month, students of Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District learned how to diffuse situations of bullying during an interactive assembly. The assembly, which kicked off the school’s

character education initiative, featured “Sticks and Stones,” a musical written, produced and presented by performing artist Lyle Cogen. The show used a 3-D set to discuss different types of bullying, the characteristics of a good friend and inclusion. It also invited students to take on the different roles

in a bullying situation by having them participate in skits. Additionally, members of Daisy Troop 3033 spelled out the school’s character education initiative slogan, “Choose Kind,” on the school fence with blue and yellow plastic cups.

Superintendent Appointed

At its October 24th business meeting, the Bethpage Board of Education unanimously appointed David Schneider as the district’s next superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2018. He will replace current Superintendent Terrence Clark, who is retiring after 32 years of service to the district. Mr. Schneider currently serves as the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction and technology, a position he has held for the past four years. Mr. Schneider brings a wealth of knowledge to the position of superintendent, with more than 16 years of experience in the education field. During his tenure as assistant superintendent for instruction and technology, he has overseen the implementation of the district’s 1:1 Chromebook initiative, which included providing the necessary professional development for staff. He also spearheaded the district’s partnership with Google to add the Google G Suite for students and staff, as well as facilitated the district’s hosting of Google ExploreEDU, an event

designed to introduce school technology professionals to different technology solutions in the classroom. In addition, Mr. Schneider has overseen the implementation of new programs within the Bethpage schools, including Go Math, Writer’s Workshop, Be an Expert and Frontier, as well as the expansion of Achieve 3000 into grades 3-5. At the high school level, he has overseen expanded course offerings to include a number of Advanced Placement and college-level classes. Mr. Schneider has also helped to expand offerings to staff members within the district’s Professional Development Academy, including the district’s first blended courses (classes in which a portion of the instruction is web-based, online learning). Prior to his current role, Mr. Schneider served as principal of John F. Kennedy Middle School in the district and as an assistant principal at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District. He also serves as a national

staff instructor for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Mr. Schneider holds a Bachelor of Arts in geology from Binghamton University and a Master of Arts in education/ special education from Touro College. He earned his Professional Diploma in Administration from LIU Post and merited the distinction of receiving the Walter Seuss Award in recognition of being the “outstanding student in the program.” Mr. Schneider has also completed his doctoral coursework in teaching and learning at Hofstra University. “I am honored to be appointed as Bethpage’s next superintendent of schools,” said Mr. Schneider. “I look forward to continuing the district’s tradition of excellence and maintaining the high standards that have made our schools so successful. I am excited to work with the board of education, the entire Bethpage staff and the greater community to continue to evolve our educational program to ensure the success of all students.” “We are pleased to announce Mr. Schneider as our next superintendent,” said Board of Education President Michael Kelly. “He is a proven educational leader within the Bethpage community and has already established positive relationships with all constituencies. Hicksville Bond Vote The Hicksville Public School District administration and Board of Education would like to remind the community to vote on an important bond referendum on November 14th. The bond will have no additional impact to taxpayers, and is comprised of two separate propositions. Proposition One seeks to bond approximately $26.8 million in order to perform necessary facilities and educational upgrades

for the students and community. These include roof replacements, library media centers, the addition of technology rooms, and heating, air conditioning and electrical system upgrades, districtwide. Proposition Two, which is dependent upon the approval of Proposition One, would authorize the district to construct an Aquatic Center, featuring an indoor swimming pool and related additions, including a lobby,

lavatory, locker facilities, paved parking lot and machinery. This would require an additional bond for approximately $14.7 million, still with no additional tax impact for residents. Voting will be held at each of the elementary schools between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. on November 14th. Additional information is available on the district’s website at www. hicksvillepublicschools. org.

Eight students received the distinction of National AP Scholar for obtaining an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Turkey Drive Beneﬁt Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards,

or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in need across our country
