n a beautiful October day, the Syosset Central School District held its annual Homecoming game and carnival, capped with a resounding victory over Valley Stream Central High School. Hundreds turned out for the community-wide event, which featured halftime show performances from the Syosset High School cheerleaders, kickline and marching band. Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature. Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with
record snowfall yet again. Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end. Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’. In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted
house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day. For now, anyway. And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax. There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list. It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

Students at Syosset High School toured through a rolling library when the Digital Bookmobile pulled up in the school’s parking lot earlier this month. The Bookmobile is a traveling online library system called OverDrive that allows students to research and check out e-books using their student IDs and an internet connection. Once checked out, the books are available
on student Kindles and Nooks. Syosset High School Librarians Lynn Ortlieb and Paige Rowse hosted the event. Students filed into the Bookmobile during separate class trips throughout the day, interacting with research and checkout stations inside the trailer. Outside the Bookmobile, a table held questionnaires that helped students narrow
down the types of books they like by answering a series of personality and entertainment-guided survey questions. Attached to an 18-wheel rig, the Bookmobile travels to numerous school districts, setting students up with an alternative access to books that might not be available in e-book format at their local school and community libraries.

John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District was the first school in the nation to be renamed after the former president, just four days after his assassination. Tied as the first with JFK Elementary School in Butte, MT, JFK Middle School held remembrance events and a ceremony on Nov. 22, 2013 to mark
the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s death. This fall, Principal Kevin Fullerton held another smaller ceremony to commemorate the official designation of the school as a historical site. Donated by the Bethpage Historical Society, a historical marker was unveiled on October 8th. The quaint ceremony

Stepping Out To Meet Students Sixth-grade students at South Woods Middle School in the Syosset Central School District were treated to a special presentation on October 15th as they learned about a special organization that helps combat homelessness and hunger on Long Island. Dana Lopez, the communications director at the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) in
Hempstead, visited the library at South Woods to speak with the kids about the hidden problem of homelessness. The students were asked to imagine not having any food in the refrigerator or having to put everything they own into a shopping cart. Lopez played a 5-minute video that introduced what the INN does, which includes feeding 250-500 hungry
Long Islanders in its soup kitchens every day. Kids also learned about the various homeless shelters the organization runs and got a sneak peek at how those shelters function. Students asked questions and gathered information on how they can volunteer to help at the INN. The presentation was delivered to all sixthgraders throughout the day.

School Store Reopens
After almost 20 years of being closed, the school store at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District has officially reopened its doors. Offering a mix of basic school supplies, spirit items and fun extras,
the school store will be open for students to make purchases during their lunch hours. Run by the school’s academy class, there was a formal ribbon cutting on October 17th. Superintendent Terrence

On Monday, September 22nd, the Village School fifth graders enjoyed a lovely day in the great outdoors at Caumsett State Park. Working with Village staff members and a wonderful group of naturalists, the children participated in many activities including canoeing, Pond Ecology, hiking, Survival, and a very exciting night hike.
They enjoyed a cookout for dinner and built incredible shelters for two, as part of the Survival activity. In Pond Ecology, they found newts, fish, and other aquatic animals, and during the night hike, the children walked alone through the woods, a process during which they gained comfort in their surroundings and a sense of pride in overcoming
their fear. This obstacle, the thought of which had made many of them quite nervous, occurred during the extended portion of the day. The beautiful surroundings added to the joy all of the children felt throughout the day. They were excited to tell their families about their outing when they returned to Village at 9 p.m.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto reminds all civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce in the Town that they are welcome to be listed on, and linked to, the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “The Town is always looking for ways to make the Town’s website as informative and convenient as possible for residents,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “By listing civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce, residents in our communities have a handy resource for contacting the organizations that represent them. It also gives the organizations more exposure and an opportunity to expand their membership. Many civics and chambers already participate. Technology Summit More than 700 educators and vendors came together at the 2014 Long Island Technology and Education Summit to learn about the best and most innovative ideas in education technology today. The summit was made possible by Nassau BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and Eastern Suffolk BOCES, in partnership with lead sponsor Teq. This year’s summit had more than 30
workshops, in which attendees learned how to effectively use emerging technology to enhance the academic experience for students. Topics included how to “flip” a classroom, enhancing school security through technology, creating a TV studio on a shoestring budget, and using Google apps. During two poster sessions, teachers from local school districts demonstrated web tools, programming, iMovie
for English language learners, and ebooks, just to name a few topics. The first keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Dede, the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, spoke about “the global knowledge-based economy” and “how we need personalized learning with a skilled person at the heart of it.” Dr. Dede also discussed a
new curriculum research project, EcoMuve, that is expanding the limits of the classroom through the use of 1:1 mobile devices to explore and learn. He went on to say that success in work depends on a person’s interpersonal skills. Afternoon keynote speaker Bill Daggett, Founder and Chairman of the International Center for Leadership in Education, offered insights into making
students college and career ready. He explained that data mining and artificial intelligence will become more sophisticated as people’s habits and experiences are monitored by computers. Two Long Island educators, Christopher J. Pellettieri, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction of the Rockville Centre UFSD, and Alison Chiquitucto, kindergarten teacher
from South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon UFSD, were awarded the 2014 Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation in Technology Award. The award recognizes excellent work in successfully implementing new technology and strategies in classrooms to help improve student performance.

Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest nonprofit human service organizations, has just been awarded a new fiveyear Solutions To End Homelessness Program (SEHP) grant totaling $193,934 per year. Funded by the NY State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, this grant will support Family & Children’s Association’s efforts to provide transitional living services, including housing and independent living skills training, to the approximately 1,500 homeless youth living on Long Island. This grant will further enable Family & Children’s Association to: • provide counseling, case management and skill building to youth at risk for homelessness; • continue to accept youth in crisis at
its 24/7 emergency shelter; • offer respite to youth dealing with abuse, neglect or challenging home lives; • provide food, stable housing, independent living skills training, financial counseling, and a structured home environment for up to 18 months at its transitional residence, located in Freeport; • develop job opportunities for youth who move onto independent living environments to ensure that they can afford to live on Long Island as selfsupporting adults. Job opportunities and adequate training for careers that can support a Long Island lifestyle will keep formerly homeless youth from becoming homeless adults, thus
breaking the cycle of poverty. Family & Children’s Association, with community-based programs scattered across Long Island, has a long and successful history of assisting at-risk youth. According to President/ CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “this grant will allow us to continue to offer safety and shelter to our youth while committing to their future success by offering them skills training, educational incentives and opportunities for successful transition to independent living. Women Of Distinction Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town is beginning to accept nomination forms for the 17th Annual Women of Distinction awards program. “Each year, the Town has the privilege of honoring designated ‘Women of Distinction’ in each of eight categories,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Winners will be recognized at a special ceremony early next year.” The Supervisor noted that anybody who would like to submit a candidate for the “Women of Distinction” need only fill out a nominating form and submit to the Town. Nominating forms have been distributed to libraries throughout the Town. They can also be found at Town Hall or can be downloaded from the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “Anybody is welcome to submit an application, including those who have done so in the past and whose candidate was not selected,” Supervisor Venditto said. Women who either live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay may be nominated in the following categories: 1) Arts: Woman who has contributed to
the cultural life of the community through theatre, dance, music, art or literature. 2) B u s i n e s s : Professional woman in a position as owner, CEO or high-level manager of a business or industry. 3) Community and Civic Affairs: A leader, supervisor, administrator, manager or member who has made a contribution to the community. 4) E d u c a t i o n : A woman educator, administrator or director of a public or private institution of learning who has been outstanding in the field. 5) G o v e r n m e n t : Woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the community through her work in or with local government. 6) Health Services: Individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the health services field. 7) Humanitarian: An outstanding woman who has made a contribution to the community. This individual may or may not be affiliated with a commercial, professional or non-profit agency or group. 8) Volunteer: A woman who has made an outstanding contribution in serving the needs of others.

Victory For Syosset On a beautiful October day, the Syosset Central School District held its annual Homecoming Game and Carnival capped with a resounding victory over Valley Stream Central High School. Hundreds turned out for the community-wide event, which featured halftime show performances from the Syosset High School cheerleaders, kickline and marching band. “Brave Cat” also made an appearance to entertain
the crowd and help the cheerleaders get the people loud. “What I love about Homecoming is seeing how many people come back,” said Dr. Giovanni Durante, Syosset High School’s principal. “People who graduated from Syosset as far back as the 1970’s are now returning with their kids. And in addition to the spirit and the tradition of the Homecoming Game and Carnival, we’re seeing the
entire Syosset community come together.” During the game, the rides were in full swing at the Carnival across the field as community members hopped on the Ferris wheel, Gravitron and the carousel. The Carnival ran well into the evening with rides, games and a variety of food options. The Syosset Braves Varsity Football team defeated Valley Stream Central, 41-0.
