The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is pleased to announce that seven seniors at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFKHS) have been selected as semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Competition. This is the largest group of semifinalists in POBJFKHS’s recent history. “Each of these students is an extraordinary scholar,” said POBJFKHS Principal James Murray. “They are truly outstanding representatives for our school and community.”
“To have this many students achieve the esteemed honor of being a National Merit Semifinalist during one of the most challenging years is truly remarkable,” Superintendent Dr. Mary O’Meara said. “Our District applauds these students for their hard work and dedication to their education.” Each year, an astonishing 1.5 million high schoolers nationwide enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. POBJFKHS seniors Justin Chan, Justine Choi, Jeremy Grossman, Michael Khalfin, Andre
Oganesian, Aidan Shor, and Arnav Surjan are among just 16,000 students who have made it to the semifinalist level in the competition. Their excellence has earned them the opportunity to compete for 7,600 scholarships, valued at more than $31 million. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to find clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two
separate volunteer sessions; a Morning Session from 10AM12PM and an Afternoon Session from 1PM-3PM. Volunteers will be sorting non-perishable food items, along with other items. Masks are required and volunteers who will attend are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food (canned or boxed goods) with them to this Volunteer Day. Assimilation To Civilian Life Through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Yoga Free Classes Offered To All Military & Veterans Project9line has partnered with some of the most reputable BJJ and Yoga schools on Long Island to offer hundreds of FREE classes for the month of November! To all military and veterans, come try or restart your BJJ and/or Yoga training and begin or continue healing; your life will improve in countless ways. Challenge yourself alongside your brothers and sisters in arms. The reintegration for Military Veterans back into civilian life can be difficult. Signs and symptoms of struggle are not always easily identifiable. PTSD, if left untreated, can lead to substance
abuse issues and even suicide. PTSD is a growing epidemic; nationally there is an average of 22 veteran suicides a day. More can and should be done to help people that are struggling. Studies show that Long Island has the second largest population of Veterans in the United States, second only to San Diego, California. Suffolk County has approximately 85,000 veterans and Nassau County has approximately 75,000 veterans. Instructors, practitioners and studies have shown the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Yoga on the emotional,
physical and spiritual well being of participants. It can have a profound impact on individuals, specifically veterans, suffering from a variety of distress, including PTSD. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens fall activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. Book Club, music, bingo, rummikub, line dancing, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through October 31st. “I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged as the weather gets crisper and cooler as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior fall activities are extremely popular, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!” The following programs are offered: • Mondays at the North Massapequa Community Center: 1pm Bingo (10am3pm North Massapequa Community Center will be open for cards, rummikub, and conversation)

FCA ANNUAL GOLF OUTING RAISES $170,00 TO SUPPORT PROGRAMSFCA recently hosted its 2021 Annual Golf Outing at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. The event raised nearly $170,000, will benefit FCA’s mission to protect and strengthen Long Island’s most vulnerable children, seniors, families and communities. Nassau residents will be able to volley, rally and lob balls on refurbished tennis – and new pickleball courts – in County parks. With residents flocking to the fast-growing game of pickleball, County Executive Laura Curran announced 21 new courts are now ready for play in Nickerson Beach Park, North Woodmere Park and Wantagh Park. The added amenity is part of the County’s recent $1 million investment to refurbish a total of 17 crumbling, cracked tennis courts, many now also striped for pickleball, as well as four basketball courts – completed over the summer. The announcement comes following an inaugural free adult pickleball clinic and mixed doubles tournament hosted by Sportime in Wantagh Park in partnership with the County. “Pickleball is on the upswing and I am happy to meet the demand for our many residents flocking to this fast-growing sport,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “County parks are gems in our communities and provide countless health and recreational opportunities for residents. By modernizing our parks with popular new amenities, we’re also attracting new markets, new partnerships and opportunities to boost our
economy. I want to thank Sportime for bringing their inaugural Pickleball tournament to Wantagh Park which we hope becomes a tradition for many years.” “We were so happy to have 45 adult beginners participate in our instructional clinic and 32 intermediate players participate in our competitive tournament,” said Joseph Siegel, Managing Director, Sportime Clubs. “The feedback from the players regarding the courts, the instruction and the organization was extremely positive. Almost all of the participants inquired about future pickleball playing opportunities at Wantagh Park and at Sportime. It was a huge success. We were thrilled to partner with Nassau County to host such a great event.” Renovated and New Courts in County Parks Wantagh Five tennis courts resurfaced and striped to create 10 new pickleball courts. County Investment: $167,100 Nickerson Two tennis courts and two basketball courts resurfaced. Added additional lines were added to the tennis courts for two pickleball courts. County Investment: $175,300 North Woodmere:
Ten tennis courts and two basketball courts were resurfaced. Additional lines were added to five of the tennis courts to create 10 pickleball courts. County Investment: $560,000 No fees are required to use County pickleball, tennis or basketball courts. Players currently can bring their own portable pickleball nets to play and will be able to pick up nets at each park’s administration building in the near future. Pickleball can be played on courts specifically built for the sport or by “striping” tennis courts, adding new lines to existing courts and setting up portable nets. Nassau County has 6,000 acres of parks, providing green space, basketball courts, baseball fields, ice skating rinks, golf, swimming, summer camps and much more. The county’s parks attract more than a million visitors in a typical year. Pickleball has been growing rapidly, as tennis courts are modified and pickleball courts are built, providing a fast-paced sport on 20-foot by 44foot courts. The number of pickleball players in the United States grew from 3.1 million in 2018 to about $4.2 million by 2020, according to pickleballportal.com.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as children’s movies for kids with cancer at local hospitals. Donations will be accepted through October 29th and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie

LaMarca Invites Residents To Properly License Their Dogs As Adoptions Grow With a large number of new adoptions taking place over the past year, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca invites residents who have not done so already to utilize the Town Clerk’s Office to properly license their dog. In the Town of Oyster Bay, once a dog reaches four months of age, the owner is required by Town Code to obtain a dog license and verification tag. Licenses are valid for one year. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “With the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been reports of large increases in the adoption rates of pets for companionship, especially dogs. If you have recently adopted a dog, now is the time to license it to ensure its safety and identification in case it gets lost! Each year, hundreds of beloved family dogs are lost because these animals do not have identification tags and cannot be identified and returned to their
owners. A dog license allows everyone to know your dog has a home, and also signals that your dog is up-to-date on its rabies shot. To put it simply: if you love your dog, license it! This simple act can only serve to protect our furry friends.” Dog licenses are issued to dogs four months of age or older for a 12 month period. The license must be renewed annually, and in order to license your dog, dog owners must provide the following minimum information: Name, residence address and phone number of owner Name, sex, approximate age, breed, color, markings and other identifying details of the dog Provide certification of spaying or neutering Proof of a valid rabies vaccination Town Clerk LaMarca noted that there is no fee for licensing any guide dog, hearing dog, service
dog, war dog, detection dog, or police dog. Licenses are non-transferable and in the event of a change in ownership of any dog, all licenses must be updated within 10 days of such change. Licensed dogs must wear an identification tag, affixed to its collar, provided by the Town Clerks office at the time of licensing. To obtain an application for a dog license, please visit the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay or Town Hall South in Massapequa, or at the Town’s Animal Shelter, located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The license fee is $15 for an unneutered or unsprayed dog and $10 for a neutered or spayed dog. Fees for senior citizens are $5 with proof of age. Additional Free Senior Citizen Classes At Town Community Centers Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that additional free weekday senior citizens fall activities will be offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers throughout the Town. Painting with Jock is currently underway at both the SyossetWoodbury Community Center and the North Massapequa Community Center, and Chair Yoga with Patty will begin to be offered at the North Massapequa Community Center starting on October 25th, and at the Glen Head Community Center beginning on November 3rd. “Our senior residents
here in the Town absolutely love these free activities and programs, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged as the weather gets crisper and cooler as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior activities are extremely popular, and as a result, we have added more classes and more programs to help satisfy the demand! Town & Village Open New Saliva-Based COVID Testing Site
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Massapequa Park Village Mayor Daniel Pearl announced a new Salivabased COVID testing site for the convenience of local residents will be available at the Marjorie Post Park Community Center on Monday afternoons, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. “We are pleased to expand upon our COVID testing availability to help further accommodate residents, including students and faculty from the Massapequa area. Through our partnership with ProPhase Labs, we have been providing this highly-effective saliva testing, a great noninvasive alternative to a traditional COVID test,” said Supervisor Saladino.
“Many local school districts, community members and their families have taken advantage of this free service and we are happy to partner with the Village of Massapequa Park to further serve our residents.” The saliva-based test is proven to quickly detect and identify COVID-19 and any of its 17+ current viral mutations. ProPhase Labs has the capacity to provide test results to individuals within 24 hours from the time when one of its labs receives and accepts a specimen. Residents who prefer traditional testing, nasopharyngeal swabs can be administered upon request. “We thank the Town of Oyster Bay for their assistance in making this
important service easily available to the residents of Massapequa Park,” said Mayor Pearl. “Continuing to support our school districts with continuing athletic activities and other community events is a high priority, and this service provides a safe method to further help our residents.” Testing will be regularly administered from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday afternoons. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced that the Raynham Hall Museum will host its 5th Annual “Ghost Walk”, a costumed parade featuring giant ghostly puppets of ancient Townsend family members being led by costumed paraders and their four-legged friends. The spooky seasonal event, which takes place on Saturday, October 30th, beginning at 7:30pm, will kick off at the Christ Church Rectory at 61 East Main Street in Oyster Bay, and proceed through the hamlet and conclude at Raynham Hall Museum. “The preservation of our history and the ability to educate our children on the past is so incredibly important and here in the Town of Oyster Bay, we
are blessed with historical treasures such as the Raynham Hall Museum,” stated Supervisor Saladino. “Raynham Hall hosts many historical and educational programs throughout the year, and I am pleased that the Town will be able to assist Raynham Hall with their annual ‘Ghost Walk,’ a fun tradition for children and families here that once again spotlights the amazing historical treasure that is the hamlet of Oyster Bay!” The “Ghost Walk” will feature entertainment in the form of two colonial-dressed stilt walkers that will parade with revelers, in addition to the giant ghostly puppets of ancient Townsend family members, designed and built by Superior Concept Monsters, Inc. After the
“Ghost Walk,” a dance party will take place adjacent to Raynham Hall, with special entertainment featuring animated historical figures from the Revolutionary era. Food will be available for sale courtesy of local Oyster Bay institutions Cooper’s Bluff and Coach Meeting House Food Truck, and beer will be available from the Oyster Bay Brewing Company. Families and their furry friends are welcome at this free event, and participants are asked to bring lanterns and noise makers if they have them.
