Golf Invitational Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted the 37th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational on Tuesday, October 3rd. Participants had their choice of teeing off at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, NY or Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley, N.Y. “This landmark golf event offers an opportunity to provide hope and healing
to at-risk individuals and the families who support them. LCIADD gratefully thanks our sponsors and golfers for making the event successful,” said Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, and CASAC. Named for LICADD Founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the landmark tournament raised over $254,000 to ensure that the services LICADD
provides - from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, prevention education, an Employee Assistance Program and mentoringall remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island. No one is ever turned away from receiving services due to financial hardship.
This event offered a challenging round on two of Long Island’s premier courses. Event Co-Chairs, Michael Brennan, Bill Baum, and Jeffery Capazzi, agree on the appeal of the R. Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,
as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had
become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

All-State Musicians Syosset School District Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts, K-12, Michael Salzman recently had the opportunity to meet with Syosset High School student-musicians, who have been selected to participate in the 82nd annual New York State School Music Association All-State Winter Conference. This year, 34 students will participate in the festival, either as active members of ensembles or as alternates, including some who were selected for multiple instruments. “As the NYSSMA scores came in last spring, I knew that the All-State numbers would be high this year,” said Salzman. “But I never expected [it to be] this high. This is an incredible number of students to be recognized for their outstanding musical
achievement!” Syosset High School regularly receives a high number of NYSSMA Winter Conference selections. Baylis Elementary School in the Syosset Central School District celebrated International Day of Peace on September 21st, a day established by the United Nations to promote global unity in conjunction with the U.N. General Assembly. This year’s Peace Day theme is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.” In recognition of the day,
Barbara Conover’s thirdgraders at Baylis wrote poems to expressing their thoughts on peace and created posters to visually demonstrate what peace means to them. Caps Off Celebration Orange and black could be found everywhere, from the football field to the bleachers to the festival tables as Hicksville High School held its annual homecoming celebration on October 14th. A pep rally on Friday energized students, and they returned Saturday morning for the annual homecoming fair sponsored by the PTA Council. Parents, siblings, alumni, teachers and administrators also joined in the festivities, which featured tables representing student and
community organizations, as well as food, games, face painting and a dunk tank. The four classes displayed their banners during the homecoming parade, with the junior class winning for its “Wizard of Oz” design. Before the homecoming game, there was a special tribute to the late Mike Torrellas for his contributions to Hicksville football. With his family on hand and varsity football players coming together at midfield, a flag was raised displaying the number 53 he wore as a linebacker
with the Comets. The Comets took an early lead against the Herrick Highlanders and gave the crowd a reason to go home happy with a 14-7 win. Halftime festivities began with a performance by the marching band and color guard of “Born of the Ashes” from Cirque du Soleil’s “Journey of Man.” The varsity cheerleaders and Starlets kickline team entertained the crowd. Roshon Joshi and Katie McDevitt were crowned the homecoming king and queen, respectively.

Walking for Unity Syosset High School kicked off Spirit Week 2017 with its annual walkathon on the campus grounds on October 10th. The entire student body, teachers and school staff walked in unison to raise money and awareness for the
Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove. Every year the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County welcomes more than 38,000 visitors to its exhibits as well as participants of its
educational programs. Syosset High School’s annual walkathon traditionally serves as the opening event for its Spirit Week activities. Students and staff pledge to walk the grounds of the school during first period, raising
money and awareness for a specific charity or an important cause. Additionally, Syosset students and staff have been raising funds for hurricane relief efforts this fall. The school’s Interact Club, Awareness Club and
GSA all conducted recent fundraisers. Different club booths featured at the annual Student Government Carnival have also pledged to donate a portion of their proceeds to hurricane relief efforts. In addition to the
walkathon and carnival, other highlights of Syosset High School Spirit Week include a health fair, pep rally and the annual Homecoming game.

LISFA Performers Three Bethpage High School students have been invited to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association’s Nassau Secondary Festival in November at Wisdom Lane Middle School in Levittown. Established in 1956, LISFA’s mission is to educate young string musicians by providing them with the opportunity
to work with renowned conductors and musicians from all over the country. Juniors Soham Maiti and Josephine Kim and sophomore Nicole Zacchia were selected based on their superior scores at the annual New York State School Music Association solo festivals and music teacher recommendations. Soham will be performing bass and

My name is Jason Santana. I am the Production Manager here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers® and I want to share my health story with you. One year ago, I embarked on a journey that would change my life forever. I’ve learned how to take control of my health and how to make the right choices to support my goals. I am in the best shape of my life right now; I feel incredible and have abundant energy. I have a few more pounds to achieve my goal, and I know I can get to it. This is my current reality. my weight for almost 20 years. I was very unhealthy one year ago. I had sleep apnea, I was in constant pain and was always fearful that I could suffer a heart attack at any moment. I realized it was my choice to either stay this way or to change my reality to a happier, healthier version of myself. With the help of a health coach, a curriculum of healthy habits, the support of a community of like-minded people and a simple-to-follow weight loss program, I was able to regain my health and continue toward optimal health.
