This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect
of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in
other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

Commending Excellence Hicksville High School seniors Shana Mathew and Jakub Tarlowski have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program. Both Mathew and Tarlowski achieved this prestigious
distinction following their outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. They were both honored at the Hicksville Public School District Board of
Education’s meeting on October 19th. The district congratulates Mathew and Tarlowski for their tremendous honors, and wishes them continued success in the future.

For his project Patrick refurbished storage sheds at the Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration Village in Bethpage and Brian constructed an archway at Tackapausha Museum & Preserve in Seaford.
CIDER FOR ALL - Nothing says autumn like apple cider. Students at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District had the opportunity to press their very own apple cider, under the guidance of Instructors from Nassau BOCES. The program included a brief introduction that recapped the history of apple cider, the many different types and tastes of apples, and how the pressing process works. Seeking Volunteers BEAUTIFYING BOWLING GREEN - As the seasons change, students of Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District are beautifying their school by sprucing up their surroundings. With the help of the PTA, the students enhanced their school’s sidewalks and curbs with colorful flowers. Wearing gardening gloves and using shovels, they planted mums, pansies and perennials. The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final days of the 2016 season with its second annual Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Monday, October 10th. Hundreds of children of all ages donned their best ball gowns and swashbuckling attire to participate in an expedition around the zoo. Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess. “The Pirates and
Nassau BOCES recently hosted New York State Senator Carl L. Marcellino at the Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) as he presented $50,000 to improve the facility’s theater, including curtains, sound system and lighting. As the Chair of the State Education Committee, the Senator also presented $100,000 to reduce tuition for the 2017-2018 school year. “We are overwhelmingly appreciative of the support we have received from Senator Marcellino and the entire State Education Committee,” said District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “We are proud of what these programs provide to students who have no other option for the types of intensive college and career training that we offer in the arts.” The Senator received a tour of the theater and was able to sit in on a student rehearsal and converse with LIHSA students. The students were dancing and acting as they prepared for a performance at their annual College Fair. LIHSA offers world-class training and preparation

Marching to Celebrate In preparation for the Huntington Columbus Day Parade, the marching bands of East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools in the East Meadow School District practiced their routines with the help of marching band clinicians. Each school’s band and color guard set aside a full day to improve their tone,
accuracy and rhythm with individual instrument and group marching sessions. To perfect their routine, W.T. Clarke’s students received assistance from Stony Brook University Director of Athletic Bands Dr. Christopher Parkers, high school music chairperson Steve Engle, band teacher Steve

The East Meadow School District has appointed Arthur Williams as the assistant to the superintendent for administration and special projects, effective September 1st, replacing Patrick Pizzo, who has become the district’s assistant superintendent for business and finance. Williams began his educational career in 2004 as an intern in East Meadow for the assistant superintendent for business. Among his responsibilities, he documented capital equipment to be included in the district budget, reviewed investment procedures, bond reports and state aid reporting, and shadowed the
business administrator. He went on to become the district’s internal auditor, processing audits of custodial supplies, payroll, monthly expenditures and budget transfers. He later advanced to assistant business administrator, a position he held for four years in which he reached tenure in the district and assisted in the development of the district’s school budget. He also closed out energy performance bonds and prior bond construction, as well as supported payroll, technology, transportation and procurement functions. In 2009, Williams became the assistant superintendent of finance and administrative services in the Kings Park Central School District. There, he coordinated, tracked and managed a $76 million general fund budget and was responsible for business functions, operations, noninstructional staff, transportation, school lunch and athletics. Partners for the Future East Meadow High School senior Sonali Persaud has been selected to participate in the 20162017 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Partners for the Future program. Partners for the Future provides high school seniors with an opportunity to experience biomedical exploration for seven months by conducting original research under
the guidance of a scientist mentor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. At the conclusion of the program, Persaud will present her research findings to an audience of science students, mentors, CSHL administrators, parents and teachers. East Meadow High School research teacher Ginna Gabalski nominated Persaud for
this opportunity during her junior year. Persaud became a finalist after expressing her academic goals, scientific aspirations and experiences related to medical research through an extensive interview. The district congratulates Persaud on this achievement and wishes her tremendous success in the program.
Poem Published Yana Vilchynskaya, a seventh-grader at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District, has been named a winner in the America Library of Poetry 2016 National Student Poetry Contest. According to its website, the America Library of Poetry is dedicated to the expression of creativity
through writing and provides an outlet for students to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences. Titled “Accomplished,” this year’s contest invited students across the United States to submit an original 20-line poem on any subject and style they prefer. Vilchynskaya’s poem,
“We’ve Always Been Grown Up,” earned her an Amazon gift card and publication in the 2016 Student Poetry Compilation, which publishes less than 20 percent of all contest entries. The district congratulates Yana on this literary achievement.

Shining a Light
Members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) walked the Sunken Meadow State Park boardwalk on Thursday, October 6th to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining physical and mental health. The walk coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week. With the regional
theme of being able to “Shine a Light” on mental health/substance abuse treatment and prevention, the LIHC called the event the Light the Path Walk. There is compelling research that physical activity improves mood and it has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. “We know that one
in every five individuals will experience a mental health issue during their lifetimes,” said Janine Logan, Director of the Long Island Health Collaborative. “The simple act of walking is one way to manage stress, while losing weight and getting in shape at the same time.”

Golf Classic a Success Bright sunshine matched the spirit and generosity of golf enthusiasts and sponsors, enabling the Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise $125,000 at their 35th annual Golf Classic. The September 15th event included a morning and afternoon shotgun, with 250 golfers coming together at the Garden City Country Club and Hempstead Golf and Country Club to support the Rockville Centre hospital. Due to the initial successful response, the
first course was completely reserved within just nine days, and so the second course was added. Many thanks to all who participated! The post-outing dinner honored William Armstrong, CPA, senior vice president of finance for Catholic Health Services, and the presenting sponsors were Sentosa Care LLC and Medtronic. Golfers and dinner guests had great raffle prizes to choose from: drivers, putters, sports tickets, luggage and more.

Joshua DeJesus, who graduated from Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts this past June, is currently enjoying an extremely successful freshman college year. In addition to studying acting with the Conservatory of Theater Arts, Purchase College at the State University
of New York, Josh has already landed major roles in theater and on television. This summer, Josh joined the off-Broadway ensemble cast of the classic urban musical Runaways. According to The New York Times, the production was “a pulsing reincarnation testifying to the atomic power of adolescent
angst. Every other number feels like a rousing finale,” reviewer Ben Brantley observed. “But how are you going to keep a lid on a cast with this much natural talent and vigor?” At the end of this month, Josh will star in an episode of the hit NBC drama Chicago Fire. He will portray Chris Brady, a troubled teen who has been abandoned and forced to live in a sewer, and comes to befriend firefighter Stella Kidd (series regular Miranda Rae Mayo). The episode is set to air on Tuesday, October 25th. Healing Heart 5K The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at
10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates
a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together.
