Town Announces Field Upgrades At Abe Levitt Field In Hicksville

As part of park improvements throughout the Town, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announce that upgrades are coming soon to Abe Levitt Field in Hicksville. Crews will replace three synthetic turf infields to improve the playing experience and safety for athletes who utilize this facility. “My colleagues on the Town Board and I have made field upgrades in all communities a top priority. We are now pleased to announce that Abe Levitt Field in Hicksville will soon have three new synthetic turf infields for athletes to enjoy. As the host of many little league games, this park and the visitors it welcomes each day will benefit tremendously from these new enhancements,” Supervisor Saladino said. Artificial turf fields have a general useful life of up to 10 years, however

they are less expensive than the long-term cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt surface. Turf fields also provide the potential for fewer cancellations of games due to inclement weather, as the field is able to absorb rain storms in a manner that is not possible on a fully-dirt infield. “Little Leaguers from throughout the Town of Oyster Bay have the opportunity to play at Abe Levitt Field, and the Town Board and I hope these field upgrades will enrich their playing experience,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “These enhancements improve play quality for all who utilize these fields, while providing less longterm maintenance costs for taxpayers.” For more information about Town parks, including local programs and events, visit the Town’s website at www. oysterbaytown.com/parks.

Breast Cancer Screenings At The Syosset Public Library Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D Plainview) is partnering with NuHealth and the Breast Imaging Center at Nassau University Medical Center to bring the breast cancer screening van to the Syosset Public Library from 8 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Thursday Nov. 16, 2023. Free mammograms will be made available to asymptomatic women over the age of 40; Appointments include a breast exam from a nurse, a mammography, and selfexamination instructions. Appointments are required, and women who do not have insurance may be eligible for free

mammograms through the Cancer Services Program. Women with health insurance may be required to make a copayment. Patients who have gone more than a year since their last mammogram will be required to get a prescription from their doctor (if they have insurance) and provide any past films (if available). The Plainview Water District (PWD) is hosting its sixth annual Pharmaceutical Take Back Day on Saturday, October 28 between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm at 10 Manetto Hill Road. Residents are encouraged to stop by the District Headquarters to safely and properly dispose of any unwanted or expired medications. As a part of the PWD’s Preserve Plainview initiative, this annual drive-thru event ensures the proper disposal of pharmaceuticals and prevents them from

making their way into the aquifer which is our community’s sole-source of drinking water. “The Plainview Water District highly encourages the Plainview-Old Bethpage community to join us in participating in this year’s Pharmaceutical Take Back Day event—to dispose of their expired or unused medications in a safe and convenient way,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “We have a collective duty as a community to make all efforts possible to protect

our shared environment and drinking water. This event is a quick and easy act that has a significant and long-lasting impact on our environment and sustainability. Town Takes Legal Action Against Grumman Over Bethpage Park Cleanup Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that the Town has filed a federal lawsuit against the Grumman Corporation for the decades-long stalled cleanup of the ballfield at Bethpage Community Park, which closed to the public in 2002. “We are tired of the lack of attention, lack of detail and lack of urgency demonstrated by Grumman, and we are not going to sit wait any longer as the park cannot be fully open to the residents of Bethpage,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Grumman Corporation has been dragging its feet, hasn’t been following appropriate protocols set forth by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and quite frankly has not been doing what is right to fully protect the health and safety of our residents and the environment.” Elevated levels of soil contamination in parts of Bethpage Community

Park were first discovered in 2002, closing the park to the public. Sections reopened following extensive testing, and in 2006 the park underwent a significant $20 million remediation project funded by Town taxpayers. Grumman has not reimbursed taxpayers for these costs to date. The ballfield, however, remains closed as soil contamination far below the ground continues to exist. The Supervisor noted that despite Grumman’s lack of action, the Town has taken several steps to ensure that contaminated areas of the ballfield at Bethpage Community Park get cleaned so they may be returned to the community. The Town, with cooperation from the DEC, was working with Grumman to remediate two types of contamination under the ballfield, but the project was stalling. Although Grumman installed remediation equipment above the contaminated soil, the corporation refuses to expedite this

process and wishes to leave behind PCBs deep below the surface. The Town’s ultimate goal is to have all the contaminated soil completely removed, at Grumman’s expense, and trucked off Long Island. “An entire generation of Town residents have lost out on public access to the full enjoyment of the park, and soil borings demonstrate that a concentration of toxic contamination continues to exist far beneath the surface at the ballfield,” said Supervisor Saladino. “It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this but we will stop at nothing to ask Grumman to right their wrongs and remediate this ballfield to the highest standards. We urge Grumman to fully remove all contaminated soils from this site without being placed back into the ground. Saladino Announces Free Mega Job Fair In Bethpage Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and The Workforce Partnership announced that a Mega Job Fair will take place on Thursday, October 26th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. There is no charge for admission and parking is free. Veterans’ admission begins at 10am, while doors for General Admission open at 10:30am. The event runs until 2:00pm. Employers from across Long Island will be seeking candidates for positions including entry and middle management level, licensed professional, hospitality and food service industries, banking, staffing and individuals with technical and IT experience. “We’re proud to have helped thousands of residents find meaningful employment through our career center and private

sector jobs fair,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Workforce Partnership and Town of Oyster Bay are committed to helping residents find meaningful employment opportunities as well as assisting local businesses in recruiting qualified employees. This Mega Job Fair will connect private and public sector employers with job seekers.” The Town of Oyster Bay serves as administrator of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job

opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search. Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers. Open House For Town Pre-School Programs Town of Oyster Bay residents who are interested in enrolling their children in a preschool program are invited to attend an Open House at one of the Town’s two pre-schools, located in Syosset-Woodbury and Marjorie Post Parks. Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites parents to the facilities to learn about the popular program available to three-and four-year-olds in the Town of Oyster Bay. “As a mother of young children, I know how important the early years of a child’s life can be in

their development for the future,” Councilwoman Maier said. “The Town’s Pre-School Program offers a positive environment for each student to help and encourage their love of learning.
