Student Spotlight THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE SUBMITTED BY: JUSTIN MCGOWAN, AGE 16, MASSAPEQUA HIGH SCHOOL
I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist. I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class. I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed
over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq. Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth. But can the students really be blamed? In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.
History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke. So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

Miscellaneous Musings It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still
less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead. Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his
eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very first holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

Walk for Hope On Sunday morning, November 8th, over 1,000 Long Islanders of all ages are expected to gather at the celebrated Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, One Southwoods Road, Woodbury, for CancerCare 13th Annual Lung Cancer Walk for Hope. This powerful morning of support for patients, survivors, loved ones, caregivers and the bereaved will support CancerCare’s Lung Cancer Support Program, the only ongoing lung cancer support program on Long Island. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the walk will officially kick off at 9:30 a.m. Anyone interested in starting a team or walking as an individual can register in advance at www.cancercare.org/ lungcancerwalk or by calling 888.814.WALK. Schools, community groups, businesses, and teams of family and friends are encouraged to join in and celebrate survivors, honor loved ones and help support CancerCare’s mission! Each participant receives an event t-shirt as well as treats from local community partners. The minimum adult registration fee is $35 ($40 after October 8th). Students, ages 13-22, may register for $20. There is a minimum $10 donation for each child who joins the walk (ages 12 and under). Long Island area supporters and businesses are making a difference in the weeks leading up to the event by organizing fundraisers in support of the lung cancer program. Seaford’s Kim Pellizzi and Bethpage resident Mat DeSanno both lost their mothers to lung cancer and have organized events in their memory and to support CancerCare. On Saturday evening, October 17th, Kim Pellizzi, will partner with East Meadow Lanes for her 9th annual fundraiser, “Strike Out Cancer.” Last year, more than 200 people took part and Kim and
her family raised more than $20,000 for the Lung Cancer Walk for Hope. “CancerCare’s support has made every day a little easier,” said Kim. Kim’s team, “The Butterflies” is named in honor of her mother’s love of butterflies. When she sees a butterfly she says, “I believe that it’s my mom telling me everything will be alright. The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final weekend of 2015 with its first-ever Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Sunday, October 11th. Hundreds children of all ages donned their best ball gowns and swashbuckling attire to participate in an expedition around the zoo. Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess. In honor of the high seas adventure theme, The Priceless Parrot Rescue Organization was in attendance to host a “take a pic with a parrot” booth. The photo opportunity exhibit raised donations to support the Priceless
Parrot’s rescue efforts. The event also supported the Long Island Butterfly Effect Project by encouraging all event attendees to bring with them a new or used children’s book(s), appropriate for grades one to seven. Additionally, the Game Farm offered all Columbus Day Weekend visitors an increased coupon rate as well as the chance to get up-close and personal with the zoo’s Bearded Dragons. “The Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect way to end our 2015 season,” says Melinda Novak, Co-Owner/ Vice President, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “The weather was perfect and all of the families seemed to have a lot of fun. New to the Game Farm this year was the Camel Encounter, where guests hand-fed the camels and learned fun facts from the staff. After completing 70 hours of flight training, Bethpage High School senior Connor Golden has
taken and passed not only his written test, but also his flight test, and earned his pilot’s license for operating a single engine propeller plane under 12,500 pounds. He is currently in the process of applying to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he wants to be part of the flight team and ultimately become a fighter jet pilot or a member of its Office of Special Investigation.
Connor currently serves as the class president and captain of the spring track team. He is an AP Scholar with Honor and a member of the National Honor Society. Summer Reading Reward Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) School District’s Pasadena Elementary School recently received the POB Public Library Summer Reading Award for having the most students participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. Summer reading encourages students to

Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School students recently participated in a “BookTasting.” Students were introduced to new and unique books available to them as part of their independent reading.
Ms. Ninavaggi and Mrs. Hernandez’s eighth grade English Language Arts (ELA) classes had four minutes at each table to discover as many books as possible. The “Book-Tasting,” organized and created by interim library media specialist Teri Polis,
helped students form a list of books they were interested in reading during the 2015-2016 school year. Her efforts and creativity provided an enriching experience for eighth grade students that encouraged reading during the afterschool hours.
