Despite the gray skies, JOINING THE CLUB - Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Plainview- the Bethpage community Old Bethpage Middle School students recently participated in the school’s annual club gathered for the annual fair to sign up and take advantage of the wide variety of clubs and activities offered homecoming celebration, throughout the school year. Students filed into the gymnasium to meet with club advisors and current club members to learn about the variety of extracurricular opportunities available to them. Some of the clubs offered include, Debate Club, Leo Club, Student Government, Drama Cadets, Stock Market and Culture Club.

Who Are We?

The National Merit Scholar title is a prestigious one that is annually bestowed upon a very select percentage of students. Hicksville High School seniors Shana Mathew and Jakub Tarlowski have both earned this recognition after advancing through the National Merit Scholarship competition. Mathew and Tarlowski first attained the National Merit Semifinalist status

based on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. An estimated 1.6 million students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program’s competition each year when they take the PSAT as juniors. Those with exceptional scores are later distinguished and eligible for the higher recognitions. They were then named finalists based on applications and portfolios of their academic

records, extracurricular achievements and awards. Now, they are among approximately 7,500 National Merit Finalists who went on to be identified as National Merit Scholars with scholarship award prizes. The district congratulates Mathew and Tarlowski for their tremendous honors, and wishes them continued success in the future.

Concert Lottery Applications Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto is happy to announce that lottery applications for tickets to the Town’s annual free Holiday Concerts, are now available. The Town’s Annual Holiday Concerts, now in its 33rd year will be held on Monday, December 5th, Tuesday, December 6th, Wednesday, December 7th, at 7:30 p.m. and an afternoon matinee also on Wednesday, December 7th, at 2 p.m. “As always, this much anticipated event will be held at the Tilles Center on the Long Island University-C.W. Post campus located at 720 Northern Boulevard, Brookville. It will be a wonderful holiday experience for all to enjoy,” Supervisor Venditto said. Due to the Holiday Concert’s overwhelming popularity, the Town will once again distribute a Holiday Concert ticket lottery. This ticket lottery

is a fair and impartial system that has been very successful in the past in providing everyone with an equal chance of securing a ticket. To enter the lottery, residents need only pick up an application, or print out a copy from the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com, fill it out and return it to the address on the application. Once received, the applicant’s name will be placed into the lottery, from which winners will be selected at random. Selected applicants will receive tickets to either their first, second, third or fourth choice of performance depending on availability. Outdoor Explorers The Outdoor Education Club at South Woods Middle School in Syosset took its first geocaching trip of the school year in September. Joined by science teacher and club adviser Chris Meyers, students visited the Stillwell Preserve before school where they

hiked 1.5 miles, using the Geocaching app coordinate system to hunt for the geocache, which in this case contained a small teddy bear inside. Geocaching is a realworld, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a

specific set of coordinates and attempt to find the geocache hidden at that location. Geocaches are usually containers or boxes with items inside left by previous adventurers. Often the container includes a pen and small notepad for documenting the activity.

invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished ﬂip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

(Williston Park, NY). Other cultural specialists assisting on the Festival project are: traditional attire expert: Dr. Anju G. Modak (NY, NY), costumes and wardrobe assistant: Manishi Agrawal (Elmhurst, NY), rangoli workshop: Shamdai Samroo (Jamaica Estates, NY), Master of ceremonies: Nalini Raghoonauth (Center Moriches, NY) and dance workshop assistants: Sarika Persaud (Astoria, NY) and Melisa Bhagwandin (South

Ozone Park, NY). In addition, the Children’s Museum will receive the assistance of the South Asian Student Association of Adelphi University, a five star student organization that aims to spread South Asian culture and diversity by engaging students in different events and activities throughout campus. All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden

City, NY. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Set to Astound Members of Hicksville High School’s Modern Music Masters (Tri-M Chapter 503) - under the leadership of Tri-M advisor Amy Noll - will be performing at the school’s annual fall recital on October 27th at 7 p.m. The event, which will be held in the Kristoff Theatre, will
