Civic-Minded Students 30 students successfully recited it from memory. Students also had an opportunity to participate in a lesson about the judicial system, presented by New York State Judge Gina Summa. More than 60 students elected to participate in this informative and interesting presentation in lieu of their usual recess activities. Students enjoyed meeting this acting judge, who is also a South Grove parent. On September 18th the entire South Grove School came together for a special assembly to kick off the schoolwide character education program. This year’s Student Council class representatives and officers were formally installed at the assembly with the help of the school

color guard, student council advisers, Judge Summa and Principal Mi Jung An. The school also introduced another special guest to students, Mascot Grover, who reinforced the importance of every student’s commitment to good character and making South Grove the best place it can be. For many secondgraders, the grand finale of this two-week initiative was when they “aged” their personal constitutions using tea leaves to give scrolls a weathered look. Teachers from the South Grove music, art, world language and physical education departments pitched in to make this lesson on the Constitution fun and memorable.

To jump-start the school year in an exciting way, South Grove Elementary School in the Syosset Central School District infused its annual celebration of Constitution Day with many enriching and engaging activities. Second-graders participated in an enrichment lesson about the United States Constitution and wrote their own personal constitutions that highlighted their values. Music teachers also taught second-graders the Preamble to the Constitution in song. In conjunction with this, the school held its annual Preamble Challenge. Students in grades 2-5 were encouraged to memorize the Preamble. More than

Early Childhood Education is the foundation for success. You want to give them a safe, loving environment. With structure and discipline. Not just day care, but a real school with certified teachers. A school that supports working Moms (and Dads), with before and after care—and gives students as young as three years old the fundamental skills they need to develop a lifetime love of learning. Of course, choosing a Catholic education gives them much more than an educational advantage. It also helps them understand their purpose in life and their obligations to others, reinforcing the values you live at home. Isn’t that what you want for your children? To learn more about why Catholic Elementary School is a better place to start, and to find a school near you, call 516-678-5800 x 258 or visit us online at www.LICatholicElementarySchools.org

How To Stop 40% Of Your Heat Loss And Save Up To 20% On Your Energy Bills Year Round Almost 40% of a home’s heat loss occurs through the attic. Improperly vented and drastically under-insulated attic space causes heating bills to skyrocket and air conditioning bills to double in the summer. The solution to this alltoo-common problem is fixed easier than most people think. Using a revolutionary product from Owens Corning to insulate your attic can be done in one day for as little as $1,499. That price includes the material and the labor to install the product. This new fiberglass insulation is blown into the attic space with an exclusive process called the Atticat System. The material is non-itch and closely resembles pink cotton balls, since it has no formaldehyde binders like other insulation products. The Atticat insulation has no chemical additives, so not only is it itch-free, but causes no damage to wires or vents inside the home’s attic spaces. The material is also mold-free, non-combustible and doesn’t settle after it’s blown in. Being a Platinum dealer for Owens Corning on Long

Island, Unified offers all the products it sells for one low price, and that price always includes the complete installation. Unified offers Owens Corning roofing as well as its insulation materials, and also supplies and installs all types of siding, custommade windows and custom-made doors. Having started on Long Island 30 years ago, Unified Windows, Doors, Siding and Roofing has grown into one of the largest companies of its kind in the tri-state area. With five showrooms located in Hempstead, Huntington, Patchogue, Brooklyn and Scarsdale, the company has all products on display seven days a week in all five showroom locations. Unified’s team of over 20 in home salespeople make shopping for home improvements as easy as it gets. Unified’s credentials are unparalleled

in the industry, with over 20 certifications and manufacturer partnerships. These national companies include custom windows by Andersen, Pella and Ideal; premium siding from Certainteed, Alside and James Hardie; roofing from Owens Corning and GAF, as well as doors from companies like Provia and HMI. Every product sold comes with a full lifetime guarantee and is backed by Unified as well as the manufacturer. One of Unified’s founders and Chief Executive Officer, Steven DiMare, said, “Our unprecedented success comes from our ability to sell and install the best quality products at the lowest prices and by treating every customer as we would want to be treated ourselves.” Unified Windows Doors Siding Roofing and Insulation can be reached at 888.631.2131 or on the web at www. unifiedwindows.com. Visit one of their showrooms to see full-size displays of all their products, or call to schedule a free in-home estimate anywhere in the tri-state area.

the process of replacing dilapidated playgrounds with all new equipment, bringing a brand new, stateof-the-art playgrounds to parks throughout the Town. Playgrounds in need of enhancement are also receiving a facelift so that children can continue to safely enjoy them for years to come.” “In the coming weeks, residents can see additional playground improvements at communities throughout our Town, including parks in Syosset, Plainview, Massapequa and Farmingdale,” Councilwoman Johnson added. Parks and parklets that will see new playgrounds and enhancements include: • Ellsworth Allen Park,

Hicksville High School senior Adithya Ajith has been named a semifinalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Ajith is one of 16,000 students nationwide, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors who qualify in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/

National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To become a finalist, Ajith must submit a detailed scholarship application, providing information about his academic record, participation in school

“Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine?” ~ Mitch Albom Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.

E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile. May you rest in peace, Mr. E… Love and kisses, Jamie

RECOGNIZED FOR RELIEF - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board proudly honored the exemplary actions of PSEG Long Island workers for their hurricane relief efforts and contributions. In the wake of Hurricane Irma, 480 PSEG workers travelled to Florida to restore electric power to particularly hard hit areas. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented a citation in recognition of PSEG’s dedicated administration and workforce.

Renovation & Beautification Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is pleased to announce an exciting new renovation and beautification project slated for Beekman Beach in Oyster Bay, which will be completely financed and facilitated through the generous support of the Oyster Bay Lions Club. “This is a perfect example of local government and the community working cooperatively to accomplish something meaningful and positive for the community,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Oyster Bay Lions Club has a long and distinguished legacy of contributing to

our community and this beautification project is another example of the incredible impact they have on our Town to make it a better place.” The Oyster Bay Lions Club will renovate an existing overlook at the northern portion of Beekman Beach, which is situated on the western waterfront, just west of the Town’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina. The project will include new benches, a new walkway and patio area, landscaping and a newly installed flag pole. The Lions Club, through their own fundraising initiatives, will fully

finance the undertaking and be responsible for all aspects of construction. The Lions Club will work with the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Public Works to ensure that the project meets design and construction criteria. “Beekman Beach is an area that has long been appreciated by our residents for its serenity and incredibly scenic views of Oyster Bay Harbor,” Supervisor Saladino added. “This renovation project will further enhance this already beautiful park and provide amenities that will allow our residents to even more fully appreciate all that it has to offer.”
