Paula Abdul: Inside the Heart of a Pop Music Legend By Allison Kugel

On October 3rd, Paula Abdul hit the road on her North American tour; a tour that’s been more than twentyfive years in the making, since her 1992 Under My Spell tour which grossed $60 million in ticket sales (a mint by 1992 standards), yet also yielded some tragedy that almost sidelined the beloved performer forever. The world knows Paula as the plucky, iconic dancer and pop star turned American Idol judge, turned legacy performer. What people may not know is that this Grammy-winning legend had to climb a mountain of adversity, both physical and emotional, to dance again... Allison Kugel: You’ve said that when it comes to your choreography, you would often dream the dance steps up in your mind, and then run to the bathroom mirror and go through the steps that you’d already envisioned. Do you feel that when it comes to your choreography, it’s being channeled through you, like it’s coming from some higher source?

Allison Kugel: Is there anything else you feel you are still here to accomplish or experience, that has yet to be done? Paula Abdul: I really want to do some more producing, both in television

attention now, as I’ve gotten older, to those signs the universe gives me.

Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about your tour, Straight Up Paula!. Are you going to make each song’s choreography and costumes reminiscent of the original music videos, or will you change it up to reflect present day?

Paula Abdul: I definitely do. I feel that’s one of my biggest contributions. That’s what people herald me as doing, and it’s nice to know that. It’s nice to know that you can create and spark those kinds of dance crazes, but also that they can stand the test of time. A lot of dancers will say, “You’re American Music Awards dance opening numbers are ‘almanac.’” (Laughs) And artists that will say, “Man, I watched and learned everything that you ever did.” It’s wonderful to hear that.

Paula Abdul: It will be a little of both. I know that fans come to hear those songs, and they will, but I’m not doing a direct replication of those [music] videos. There is a nod to them, with a little bit of nostalgia. But for me, this is an opportunity to create my own vision of what I want to do in terms of interpreting the songs. I’m incorporating lots of technology and multimedia, and with some storytelling as well. I’m also going to cover some fun things, and some not so fun things, from my life in this show. It’s giving people a little bit more insight into who I am, and the career I’ve had. Allison Kugel: I ask this question of everyone, because I learn so much about people through this question… when you pray, who or what do you pray to? Paula Abdul: I believe in God, and I do pray to God. But I am also spiritual in the sense that I know I have angels around me, and I know to pay attention to the signs I get from the universe. I used to not pay attention to the signs that were right in front of me. I feel that I finally get it. I do pay

Allison Kugel: Do you see yourself as a pioneer with putting dance at the forefront of the pop music industry?

Allison Kugel: You came into the business as a dancer, and as a choreographer, and then you ventured into recording music. At that time, although you were extremely commercially successful, you had your share of critics. A lot of other artists at the time said, “She’s really a dancer, just trying to be a singer. She’s off-key, she should stick to choreography…” How did you handle that kind of criticism back then, and how do you handle it now? Paula Abdul: I feel like being in this business for over thirty years, you learn how to handle constructive criticism, and just plain old, simple criticism. What I have learned is that, although I can’t just say what the formula is for success, because success is different for everyone, I do know that a recipe for failure is trying to please everyone. You never will. For me, I’m an entertainer that happened to resonate with millions of people. I’m grateful for that. I’ve never claimed to be the best at anything. I’m a constant, perpetual student, and I love learning. I love improving upon weaknesses and nurturing the strengths; and being able to draw upon inspiration from others. Allison Kugel: Why do you think you resonated the way you did with my generation; those of us who were coming of age in the late eighties and into the early to mid-nineties? Paula Abdul: I think the throughline of most of my success is my heart, and I think that it connects with other people’s hearts, especially women. I have this profound love affair with women. I’ve never been a threat to women. I have been very inclusive, and always thought the

most beautiful thing you can do is to recognize beauty in someone else and celebrate that. Because I was always an accessible type of artist, people felt that they knew me, and they do know me. Allison Kugel: Do you have a tenyear dream, as in, “in ten years I’d like to be retired, living on the beach.”? Do you have a plan like that, or is this the dream, to keep singing and dancing for as long as you can? Paula Abdul: I feel extremely grateful that I’m able to do this. I was sidelined for many, many years because the last time I was on tour I was in a terrible accident in a sevenseater jet. One of the engines blew up and the right wing caught on fire, and we plummeted. Allison Kugel: I don’t think many people out there are aware that you went through this ordeal. Were you belted in when the plane began to plummet? Paula Abdul: I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt. I was getting ready to put my seatbelt on, but I never made it and I hit my head on the [ceiling] of the plane. It caused me to have paralysis on my right side, and I endured fifteen cervical spinal surgeries. I went through all of that, mostly, privately. Back then, we didn’t have tabloids like we do now. We didn’t have the extent of paparazzi or the [internet], so you were able to contain some information. I was so afraid of being counted out and looked at as damaged goods. The problem was that, at the time, I was. I ended up having to take almost seven years off to have all these different neuro-surgeons operating on me. So, the fact that at this stage of my life, I’m able to do this, is the biggest

gift ever! I am living, in many ways, my dream. But I also would love to branch out into other areas. And I get as much joy behind the scenes as I do from being out in front. Allison Kugel: What do you hope audiences will experience when they come out to see you on the Straight Up Paula! tour? Paula Abdul: I hope during the show they feel a celebration of fond memories of their time growing up with me. I also hope people get a chance to know me further, and get a better sense of who I am, with my whimsical ways and my sense of humor. It’s going to be a nod to everything that has inspired me since I was young, and celebrating my career, with the ups and the downs, and everything in between. Enjoy the “Doing.” Release the Result. “Let your joy be in your journey, not in some distant goal.” - Tim Cook One evening, about a year ago, I was sitting at the dinner table with my nine year old son, when he said, “Hey Mom, let’s play truth or dare!” Wanting to steer clear of any mishaps during dinner, I opted for “truth,” to which he gave me the long face and said, “Oh, c’mon mom, pick dare.” Reluctantly I said, “Okay, dare.” Knowing boys, I hoped it would be something fairly tame. My son pondered his options and with a mischievous grin, he said, “I dare you to make the nicest picture you’ve ever made in your life, and then rip it up!” In his nine year old mind, asking me to create something and then rip it to pieces was an ultimate triple dog dare. We’ve all seen how young kids react if they are building a tall tower with blocks and something or someone comes along and knocks it over. Forget about it! It’s DEFCON 1. I asked my son for a piece of white construction paper and

crayons. As we continued with dinner, I put crayons to paper, honing in on the most beautiful garden scene I could think up. I then colored my way to paradise. I meticulously drew the green grass and flowers; the blue sky and sun; the cascading birds flying by; I even did my best to draw a little country cottage. The picture was beautiful upon its completion. I held it up to show my son. “Well? What do you think? You like?” He was impressed and said, “Yeah mom, that’s actually a really nice picture. I love it.” I looked at the finished product, once again, to savor my hard work. Then, as requested, I tore it in half. No sooner did I do that, my son, dribbling food out of his mouth, screamed, “What’d you do that for?! Why’d you tear it up?!” He was horrified at the calm and swift nature of my action. I looked at him and said, “What do you mean? You dared me to make the nicest picture I’ve ever made and then tear it up. What’s the problem?” He couldn’t understand why or how I was able to do that so calmly. I looked at

it as a teachable moment (I live for those, in case you haven’t noticed). I explained that the joy was in the experience of creating the picture. The end result was merely icing on the cake; immaterial. If you live that way, no one can hurt you; no one can touch you. Alternatively, if you are married to a particular result, you’re vulnerable to disappointments and sadness when things don’t turn out exactly the way you want them to. You’re on a roller coaster ride dictated by your everchanging surroundings, as well as other people’s opinions. If you find your joy and fulfillment within, in the doing, outside results or conditions, unpredictable as they may be, will have less power to affect your state of well being. I said to my son, “I enjoyed thinking up the scenery for the picture. I delighted in choosing the colors I would use to create it and watching the picture come to life. I loved the experience of creating the picture. The end result was wonderful, but I don’t need it.”

Nassau County Attorney - New Army Reserve Ambassador The commander of the United States Army Reserve, Lieutenant General Charles D. Luckey, has appointed retired lieutenant colonel, and Nassau County attorney, Gary Port, as the new Army Reserve Ambassador for the State of New York. The position holds a courtesy rank of a Two Star General. Established in April 1998, The Army Reserve Ambassador (ARA) Program is one of the Army Reserve’s key outreach programs. ARAs are influential volunteers with significant ties to their communities who operate at state and local levels and voluntarily represent the Chief of the Army Reserve (CAR) without salary, wages or other benefits. They develop awareness and advocacy for the Army Reserve and are vitally important bridges to

communities across the Nation. Army Reserve Ambassadors are a powerful means of message delivery to the American people and they provide invaluable connections for our own centers of influence to engage local stakeholders. ARAs have the advantage of strategic timing, longterm relationships, and continued dialogue with persons of influence to achieve the desired outcomes we need to stay relevant in today’s challenging operating environment. Army Reserve Ambassador also recommend candidates for the Minuteman College Scholarship program. Recipients, in exchange for serving as an officer in the Army Reserve, will have their college tuition fully paid for.

Colonel Port, a life long New Yorker, graduated from New York University in 1983 and Brooklyn Law School in 1986. He was commissioned as an officer, in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, on December 23, 1986 and served on active duty at Fort Bliss, Texas until January 2, 1990. He then worked in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office as a prosecutor from 1990 until July 1993. He entered private practice in 1993 and opened his own law firm in 2002. In 2006 he formed Port and Sava, with Captain George Sava. Their law firm specializes in commercial litigation, divorce and veterans’ issues. Colonel Port was hired by Hofstra Law School in 2017 to work with Professor Janet Dolgan in running the Robert W.

Entenmann Veteran’s Law Clinic. The Clinic provides free legal services to veterans. Long a fixture in the veteran’s community, Colonel Port is also the chairman of the Nassau County Bar Association’s Veteran’s Law committee and the commander of American Legion Post #81. He is also a member of the Association of the United States Army and the Military Officer’s Association. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. With this appointment as Army Reserve Ambassador, Colonel Port hopes to continue and expand his work assisting reserve soldiers and veterans.

They walked for Long Island friends and neighbors, they walked for family members and loved ones, they walked in honor and in memory of the thousands of people on Long Island that die each year from cardiovascular disease and stroke – Long Island’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. They walked to start a healthier journey and a healthier life. Vito Giannola, Chair of the 2018 Long Island Heart Walk, Casey Coco; 2018 Red Cape Ambassador, Kara Reifert; K-98.3., event emcee; and 4,000 walkers stepped out on Sunday, September 16th, at Jones Beach to help save Long Island lives from heart disease and stroke. “Serving as chair of the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk was a true honor,” said Vito Giannola. “I want to thank everyone who participated in the

heart walk by forming a team, or supporting [the cause] as a sponsor. The success of the Heart Walk will save many lives.” said Giannola. The Long Island Heart Walk was an opportunity for people to improve their health by walking, while simultaneously raising funds to help fight heart disease and stroke. Award of Excellence After representing the Bethpage School District and High School as well as New York State at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston this past June, Bethpage High School junior Rahul Busri was presented an official Award of Excellence by the National Leadership Academies. The award certifies his successful completion of the Congress. At the Congress, Rahul was surrounded by many fellow high school students that share his passion, ability and potential. He

was among the delegates that were able to help new friends reach aspiring dreams while also having the opportunity to collaborate with potential future colleagues. Part of the experience allowed Rahul to watch live surgery and ask the surgeon questions in real time. Some of the greatest living minds in medicine and winners of the world’s most prestigious international prizes were among the teachers. The National Leadership Academies supports America’s high-achieving

high school students through career and focus-area programs and services. All Congresses are highly-selective and have strict requirements as all attendees are nominated by teachers or the Academy based on proven academic excellence and a demonstrated desire to achieve the very best. High school Principal Nicholas Jantz presented the award to Rahul on Sept. 27 and the entire district congratulates him on a remarkable accomplishment and bright future.

Dr. Michael Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C., one of the New York Metro region’s premier neurosurgical groups with several locations on Long Island (including Bethpage), and Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, Executive Director of the Center for Science Teaching and Learning, have announced the creation and launch of the Neurological Surgery, P.C. Health Science Competition. This competition is the first of its kind in the United States, and is open to all High School students who attend school in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. There is a registration fee for students to enter the competition, allowing them to present projects to judges in May 2019. For competition rules

and to enter, students must apply and provide information about their project concepts to www. CSTL.org/nspc/. The competition is expected to attract a large number of entries, so student teams are encouraged to submit applications early. All Nassau and Suffolk County high school principals, science teachers and guidance counselors are asked to share this information with students. “The world of healthcare and medical sciences is rapidly evolving and we are seeing advances occurring every day. For this reason, it is critical that we as members of the medical profession do our part to inspire and motivate young people to pursue careers in health and science. The competition allows

students to work alone, but encourages them to work as part of a team. Students are tasked with creating a presentation that they will showcase at the competition to be held on Long Island in May 2019. Projects must be focused on human health science and finding solutions to health related issues. Students will compete for $80,000 in awards, that will go to the top teams. Chris Amato-Smith is helping Long Island women find the strength to fight Breast Cancer, one haircut at a time. Amato-Smith, owner of Top Cuts hair salon in Bethpage, NY, is paying it forward after battling and beating Breast Cancer. Her salon’s annual fundraiser, Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer, provides funding for Long Island women who are currently battling Breast Cancer, providing a reprieve from some of their every day responsibilities so they can focus on getting well. To date, Amato-Smith’s hair salon has raised $150,000.00 for the cause, and they are far from done! “While I was going through treatment, a Breast Cancer coalition helped me with their Lend a Helping Hand program. They help women with every day tasks such as meal preparation, house cleaning, transportation

and wigs, just to name a few. Taking some of those every day burdens away means these women can concentrate on getting well.” Now in its 10th year, Amato-Smith’s Cut-AThon designates one day a year where 100% of all proceeds received for the day’s beauty services go towards assisting women on Long Island who are currently battling Breast Cancer. This year’s Cut-A-Thon will feature over 125 baskets filled with various prizes, including: gift cards, crafts, pots, games, a trip to Antigua, a Joe Namath autographed and framed jersey, an electric fireplace, a camera, autographed first edition Disney series artwork, and more. POB Supporting a Tight-Knit Community Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Old Bethpage Elementary School students recently donated eleven handknit scarves to benefit the family shelter at the Nassau County Family Service League. School faculty hosted eighty fourth grade students and parents for extracurricular lessons in knitting, over the course of several months, to create scarves for donation to local Plainview-Old Bethpage community

shelters. Students and parents donated their free time to create these scarves with the goal of helping their community and learning a fun new skill. The idea of providing this altruistic, educational opportunity to students was sparked by Old Bethpage Elementary School art teacher, Michele Frimmer, who conducted the extracurricular lessons and community outreach throughout the months-

long process. Together, students, parents and faculty combined woven strands of wool to create the scarves. Knitting is proven to improve cognitive development and dexterity in children, while promoting patience. The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is dedicated to engaging students in the community, in addition to their classroom learning.

Town of Oyster Bay Job Fair Continued From 7 of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting

applicants in accessing job opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search.

Thanks to the State’s $20 billion, five-year housing plan, we are investing in projects like this across the State, and right here in Bethpage, where they play an important role in

keeping the Long Island economy moving forward.” Oyster Bay Gardens, LLC is conveniently located near local bus lines, the Long Island Railroad, retail shops, dining and restaurants, convenience stores, and government offices. The total development cost of Oyster Bay Gardens, LLC is $18.9 million. New York State’s investment includes $9.5 million through HCR’s Housing Finance Agency’s taxexempt bonds, its New Construction Program loan of $5 million, $2.2 million through its Supportive Housing Opportunity Program, an allocation of Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits, and $2.25 million in capital construction loans provided by OPWDD, which will also provide rental subsidy assistance for the 12 supportive units.

Barry Tech teaches students a sense of responsibility and accountability,” he added. “They all have a genuine desire to be here. Bethpage Shines at Homecoming

LIHSA Musical Theatre Student Named “Scholar Artist”

Jordan Coene of the Levittown UFSD, who is studying musical theater at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was recently named a Merit Award Winner in the ScholarArtist competition, held by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing musical theater student and for superior academic achievement. Jordan Coene has been involved in theater since she was eight years old and is known as a “triple threat” – a talented actress, singer and dancer. She is not only a devoted student at LIHSA, but has attended the school’s Summer Arts

Academy for a number of years. As the name of the competition implies, she is a scholar as well as an artist, maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average. “LIHSA is not only my school, but my home,” Jordan said. “It is my safe place – a place of hard work and artistic freedom.” She credits the school with helping her to grow as a performing artist, having taught her that acting is not a craft you can ever know completely, because there is always something more to learn. “We gain new wisdom and experiences every day, that can alter our methods and allow us to work in new and different ways.” For Jordan, what makes LIHSA great is its faculty. “I am fortunate to be able to work every day with kind, supportive, extremely talented teachers,” she said. “They are constantly pushing me to strive to do my best and they help me to understand the truth of my work; that the process is what counts in the end.”

Thanks to a grant for $200,000 from The New York State Senate Health Committee, under the chairmanship of Senator Kemp Hannon, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program can greatly increase its outreach to underserved women. Says Senator Hannon, “I congratulate Adelphi for creating this new program to address disparities and at risk communities which may not otherwise receive services. This is essential to ensuring that all women are guaranteed the education, screenings and treatment they deserve.” The Adelphi program, called BEST (Breast Education Screening and Treatment), is designed to reduce breast cancer mortality by addressing disparities, increasing access to quality and

timely care, and improving outcomes through patient navigation; targeting Long Island’s most at risk communities (African American and Hispanic women, undocumented immigrants and other medically underserved populations, over 40, that face unique barriers to care). BEST works collaboratively with community partners, including the Cancer Services Program, large health care institutions and small organizations, that expand outreach and a range of resources. BEST will facilitate workshops for women, provide referrals, and provide culturally competent patient navigation to improve retention in treatment. “Early detection is key for treatment of breast cancer and the BEST program breaks down barriers to

A sun-filled day set the perfect stage for the Bethpage School District to host homecoming on September 29th, and was highlighted by a victory against Floral Park for the varsity football team. The day started as members of the community lined Stewart Avenue for the annual parade. A Bethpage fire department truck led the march as local organizations and student representatives from each class as well as the band, cheerleaders and kickline team drew energy from those in attendance. This year’s homecoming king and queen, Alex Kavazis and Amanda Imbriale,

waved to the crowd as the last part of the procession. Former Superintendent of Schools Terry Clark drove in a golf cart with Director of Athletics John Franchi during the parade to greet those lining the streets. Meanwhile, current Superintendent of Schools David Schneider marched alongside high school principal Nicholas Jantz ahead of the class floats. Following the parade were class skits in the front of the high school. This year’s themes included “Toy Story Seniors,” “Jingle Bell Juniors,” “Storytime Sophomores,” and “Fifties Freshmen” as

the grades performed next to their decorated floats. The band continued to play as attendees made their way to the athletic complex prior to the start of the game. The Golden Eagles varsity football team claimed a 15-7 win against Floral Park to put a cap on the day’s festivities. In addition to enjoying the outcome of the game, fans at the athletic complex were treated to halftime performances by the marching band, the kickline team and the cheerleading squad before the football team posted a shutout in the second half toward the triumph.
