The Hicksville Council of PTAs coordinated the 23rd Annual Homecoming Fair, which was comprised of fundraising activities such as games of skill and chance, apparel and plant sales, blowup bouncers, raffles and snack stands.

Hicksville fourth-grade students at Old Country Road School celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day with a programmed array of classroom activities ranging from lessons

Appleseed. The morning continued with classroom lessons that compared and contrasted several varieties of apples by scientifically observing the sizes, shapes, weights and tastes of the fruits. Apples sliced into segments reinforced math lessons in fractions, addition and subtraction. Students created line plots and graphs detailing their collected data. All through the morning the aroma of homemade applesauce wafted through the halls as students discussed the physical and chemical changes the apples went through during the cooking process. As a reward for their hard work, they were able to taste the pureed fruit of their labors.

NEW PRINCIPAL NAMED - Variety Child Learning Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Stacey Ratner as the new principal of center-based programs, which became effective September 3rd. Ms. Ratner previously served as VCLC’s Compliance Officer/Director of Quality Assurance & Training and Director of VCLC’s ABA Home Program. Stacey holds a BS in Sociology, a Master’s degree in Special Education, and Certificates of Advanced Studies in Applied Behavior Analysis, and Education Administration and School Leadership. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and has worked professionally with individuals with special needs and their families since 1986. Stacey has been at VCLC since 2000. Ms. Ratner replaced Judith Tabak, who served as principal of the school since July of 2008 and had been with VCLC for 33 years. Ms. Tabak retired at the end of August.

Dutch Lane Elementary School students continued their yearly tradition of celebrating Constitution Day by participating in the nationwide Pledge Across America initiative. “Our students have the opportunity to listen to an analysis, presented by our fifth-grade class, of what the words in our pledge mean,” explained Principal Susan Strauss. “This assembly provides us with an opportunity to celebrate our wonderful American heritage.” As students gathered in front of the school for

a flag raising ceremony, fifth-grade students recited the pledge line by line with added analysis of the meaning behind the words in simple terms before all students recited the pledge in unison. Pledge Across America, a program that gained prominence after the 9/11 attacks, encourages students across the nation to participate in a synchronized reading of the Pledge of Allegiance. Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a proﬁle for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far

as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First

Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro

finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

The Hicksville Council of PTAs coordinated the 23rd annual homecoming fair, which was comprised of fundraising activities such as games of skill and chance, apparel and plant

sales, blow-up bouncers, raffles, snack stands and robotic demonstrations. All profits were designated to fund scholarships for deserving Hicksville High School graduating seniors. The homecoming parade was anchored the school’s award-winning marching band. The halftime program was highlighted by the coronation of Mauricio Poveda and Doreen McDevitt as homecoming king and

queen; performances by the marching band, color guard and cheerleaders; kickline performance by the Starlets, and the naming of the 2013-2014 seniors as winners of the grade-level homecoming banner competition. Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented programming proudly starts its fifth year with a new gifted/talented director and new programs for 2013-2014. Serving Manhasset’s brightest students, SEPTA’s Gifted and Talented has offered nearly 20 free programs. SEPTA welcomes Joanne Thalheimer as the incoming Director of Gifted and Talented Programming for the 2013-2014 school year. “As an alumni of the Manhasset Public Schools, I am excited to join the SEPTA team and give

back to my community,” Thalheimer states. “I look forward to sharing what I have learned about gifted children over the years and empowering others with that knowledge.” Thalheimer is a long time resident of Manhasset with three children in the public schools, with a history of volunteer work including the Shared Decision Making team, Shorehaven Association, and Girl Scouts. Thalheimer and the Manhasset SEPTA Executive Board are also looking for parents interested in working on

various gifted/talented committees to bring presenters and programs to the community this year. SEPTA’s Gifted and Talented programs offered in past years include the very successful Chinese Culture and Language program, SAT Simulated test, Public Speaking workshop, and the science research program. Returning for the fifth year, the Introductory Science Research Experience program is a collaborate effort with the Manhasset Secondary School and Manhasset SEPTA to support the

school’s gifted and talented. Headed by awardwinning science research specialist, Peter Guastella, the science enrichment program provides a bridge between elementary gifted and talented experiences and the ninth grade introduction to science research course at the High School. SEPTA’s research program for 8th graders is offered in the Manhasset Middle School. This year, SEPTA G&T will kick off the new school year with an expert guest speaker and a new program for teens. “SEPTA is

With an assortment of gourmet foods and delightful cocktails, Island Harvest Food Bank’s 20th Annual “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” is sure to be an evening to remember. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, will use the proceeds of this celebration, its premier fundraiser, to provide critical food support to a network of almost 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other local programs that offer food assistance to the more than 300,000 Long Islanders—over 110,000 of them children—who face hunger each and every day. This year’s gala will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York. At the Taste of the Harvest, restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other fine establishments from across the Island will come together under one roof to offer attendees an array of gourmet food and drink. The evening will also feature live and silent auctions with a variety of

lavish prizes up for grabs. In addition to the food and fun, Island Harvest will honor two individuals who, through their dedication and service, have made a huge impact on the organization and its mission. Jeff Tempone, CEO of East Coast Refrigeration, will be receiving the “Above and Beyond Award” for his commitment to the fight against hunger, as exemplified by his generous donation of refrigeration units to Island Harvest’s Hauppauge Distribution Center. His contribution has helped Island Harvest store and distribute more fresh and healthy, perishable – foods, including produce, dairy products and juices. Greta Farrell, a student volunteer, will receive the “Linda Breitstone Award,” named for Island Harvest’s founder and its first president. The prestigious award recognizes an individual whose fervor, determination and hard work have made a positive difference in the lives of others.

Greta’s passion for service took hold at a young age. Upon reading a Newsday article highlighting the demand for food, the 11-year-old was shocked to learn that many Long Island families would not be able to enjoy special Thanksgiving dinners. Inspired to take action and make a difference, she wrote a letter to friends and raised enough money to buy at least 100 turkeys… in just two days. Greta is a founding member of Island Harvest’s Student Leadership Council, which empowers future leaders to increase awareness of issues related to hunger on Long Island. New Discussion Group A new discussion group for the parents of children 3 years to 7 years is being held in this fall. Parents are invited to attend to discuss common questions, concerns and issues of development in youngsters. M.O.S.T. program, Mothers of Special Tots, meets on Wednesday at 10am at the Manhasset Public Library’s Garden Room on October 23rd, November 6th and November 20th. This free program is open to all parents from the North Shore. Is my child on-target for key milestones? What I can do at home to help growth? What services are available? Parents also wonder how

to get learning, social and emotion ‘check ups’ from experts. These are just some of the questions discussed at the M.O.S.T. program chat. Headed by Dee Dee Olsen, MSW, parents get to chat and get answers to make the most of their child’s day as they go through early childhood development. “Having a place to share this information, and most importantly ask these vital questions, is what the program is about,” Manhasset SEPTA Co President Debbie Najmi states. “So come in for a cup of coffee and get the information you need each week in this causal chat

session.” Manhasset SEPTA is a local chapter of the National PTA supporting Manhasset’s special education population, including teachers, school staff, children and their families. Through expert presentation, workshops, community programs and local resources, SEPTA provides support for over 600 Manhasset families and more than 700 school staff members. Manhasset SEPTA proudly services the needs of students with disabilities, gifted and talented students, and students receiving academic intervention services.
