The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will hold its 25th Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, November 16th, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the IBEW Local 25 in Hauppauge. This year’s honorees include Community Champion and Keynote Speaker Linda Mangano. Linda is responsible for promoting the use of NARCAN (naloxone) to help emergency personnel and families prevent an overdose. LICADD will also honor Treatment Champion
Gerry Roucoulet, MDIV, CASAC, MAC, SAP and Media Champion Jim Condron, Senior Vice President Regional Strategy for Connoisseur Media at this year’s event. Mr. Roucoulet had served LICADD and the larger addiction community for many years as a clinician and intervention specialist, where his fine work continues today. Laurie Harris, former Assistant Principal for the Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center (Barry Tech), was recently appointed as Interim Principal of that school. Ms. Harris succeeds James Clark, who will be moving on to the Hempstead UFSD, where he will serve as an Associate Superintendent. Ms. Harris has been with Nassau BOCES for the entirety of her nearly 40-year career in education. She started at Barry Tech when it was known as County Center, working to find job placement for students in need with the Career Support Program. In 1996, Ms. Harris helped to launch the Springboard program for at-risk students, teaching them life skills, improving their employability and helping them to earn their GEDs. From there she was appointed as Assistant Principal at
Barry Tech, a role she has adeptly filled for the past eight years, until this October, when she was named Interim Principal. Ms. Harris holds a master’s degree in special education from Dowling College and a master’s in administration from Touro College. “Nassau BOCES is ecstatic to name Laurie Harris as the Interim Principal of Barry Tech,” said Nassau BOCES Board President Eric Schultz of the appointment. “Her expertise and educational acumen have been proven by the tremendous impact she’s made during her years at Barry Tech. I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store. Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice floating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance. All that, with the hope that these two finned friends
will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad. Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food flakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.
I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today? I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no? At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium. Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

Student Spotlight GAMER GATE The malpractice of “journalists” on prominent gaming journalism websites such as Kotaku and RockPaperShotgun was first examined under a critical lens when an independent developer named Zoe Quinn was exposed. She had cheated on her boyfriend, now her ex-boyfriend, and he had written a blog about what had transpired, intriguingly titled: “The Zoe Post.” In this blog, Eron, Zoe’s ex, documented a list of reasons and events leading to the break up, which spurred reaction from the community when it was revealed that she was having intimate relationships with people who wrote articles for gaming news websites, namely, those who wrote positive reviews and articles for Zoe’s game, “Depression Quest,” a text-based adventure game which was not well-received by the community.

As the corruption began to come to light, leading to public outcry, it was quickly censored and oppressed all across the internet. As people became more enraged, due to the fact that their right to freedom of speech was being taken away by anonymous hands, members of the community invested in the industry who felt as though it was wrong to condone corruption, started digging. More tidbits of corruption were unearthed, exposing financial and intimate relationships between writers and their sources, the developers. However, this was not before journalists responded to the community’s irritation over the lack of ethics among these journalists. These journalists defended Zoe, taking cover behind unrelated societal issues, such as misogyny and hostility towards feminists. Each week, the
journalists became more smug, making more outlandish claims while laying back, believing that everyone was powerless and that there would be no reprimand for the extremely unethical things they had done. These outlandish claims stated things such as, “The gaming industry is dying,” as well as a comparison of gamers to the terrorist organization, ISIS. These protests have gone on for weeks, indicating hope for the cause - and that cause is justice. Professional journalists know that the things they have carried out and the way they have handled public response is extremely wrong. These writers have betrayed our trust; but more importantly, their duty. People must know of the injustice that befalls the fifth estate so that it may be corrected. Awareness is crucial to fighting relentless corruption.

Nassau BOCES employees were recently awarded grants totaling more than $31,023 through the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting initiatives beyond the scope of the agency’s budget. These awards have helped to purchase iPads and Apple TVs for instructional and learning use, develop a scholarship fund for students with disabilities and provide professional artists to teach students at Long Island High School for the Arts are just a few of the programs funded this year. “I am honored and proud to win” said Nassau BOCES Jerusalem Avenue teacher Dina Bellucci who will use the grant to purchase Dance, Dance Revolution. “This program will be used to promote fun, fitness and teambuilding skills for the students,” continued Ms. Bellucci. Children’s Readiness Center teacher Ellen Weiss purchased four large, adaptive bicycles for students ages five to nine to promote good health and muscle coordination.
“You can see the students learning as they pedal,” said Ms. Weiss. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation raises funds through events such as its annual gala recognizing honorees of the Nassau BOCES Education Partner awards program. Now in its tenth year, the awards program honors people and organizations that share Nassau BOCES’ commitment to public education. “Over the years we have supported a lot of highly exciting projects,” said Catherine Pucciarelli, Foundation Chairperson. “More than 150 grants totaling almost a quarter of a million dollars have been awarded since the inception of this program in 2007.” Grant-funded teaching innovation is just one way the agency fulfills its goal to ensure student success. Nassau BOCES will continue to set the standard for high-quality programs and services that enable all students to reach their full potential.

Challenge Island Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented Committee is proud to begin the 2014-2015 year with the return of the very popular program, Challenge Island. This year the program runs for four week over the fall. This fun science-based program is being held at 5 to 6 p.m. on Fridays, starting on October 24th and continuing on November 7th, November 14th and December 5th. Once again, the program is held in the Manhasset Public Library’s Garden Room on the 3rd floor. Challenge Island is open to all elementary school children (K-6). Last year the program debuted with
an overwhelming response from the community. Participants are divided into cooperative “tribes” and asked to tackle different challenges put forth by the leader. The whimsical, wildly popular enrichment program promotes creative and critical thinking skills while reinforcing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Other SEPTA G&T programs offered last year and hoping to return in 2014-2015 include a computer coding class and the 8th grade science research class. “I was so happy to join SEPTA last year and bring some new programming to the
Manhasset community” said Joanne Thalheimer, SEPTA’s Gifted and Talented Director. SEPTA G&T is also planning to debut new community program and have an expert presentation for parents and educators this year. Artistic Excellence The Long Island Arts Alliance recently recognized Hicksville High School art students Sebastian Niculescu and Cecilia Funk. Niculescu is one of only 20 students on Long Island to receive the Scholar-Artist distinction from the LIAA. Niculescu has earned the highest level of
recognition awarded by the LIAA. The distinction recognizes his outstanding work in the visual arts, as well as his significant academic achievement. He is also a National AP Scholar and National Merit Semifinalist. His outstanding visual artwork has included drawing, painting, mixed media and
sculpture. Funk received the LIAA’s Award of Merit, which is the second level of recognition granted by the association. She was awarded in the Media Arts category for her work in photography. A recognition gala will be held at Tilles Center in the spring.

Blue Star School For the fifth consecutive year, Bethpage High School has been named a Blue Star School by the W!SE organization, who runs the financial literacy program. This award is given to schools in which 75 percent or more of the students in the financial literacy program have proven to be financially literate via the financial
literacy exam. “We are truly proud of your students’ accomplishments and are equally proud of the teachers in your schools who helped them become certified financially literate,” Executive Vice President David Anderson said in his letter recognizing the school. “Because of your dedicated and tireless commitment,
your students have been given vital knowledge about their personal finances and the tools they need to become financially capable young adults.” The Blue Star School banner will be presented to the district during the MoneyPower Conference in New York City in November.

On Saturday, November 8th, get ready to run again for your life to escape the zombie apocalypse at Brady Park in Massapequa Park, to benefit Special Olympics New York! The rUNDEAD is a 5K Run, in which runners start off with a flag belt and three flags representing their lifelines. Zombies will be stationed throughout the course attempting to take these one at a time. Once a runner loses all three flags, they are “dead” and the zombies have won. While the runner can still finish the race, they will not be eligible for awards or prizes. Runners can register
in two different ways the competitive “Fast Food” group or the noncompetitive “All You Can Eat” group. Those who do not wish to run have the option of registering to become a zombie! Each zombie will be transformed in the “Mob Tent” the morning of the event. Zombies have the option of registering as a “Hunter” who can chase runners for a short distance or a “Crawler” who can stumble, walk or shuffle after their prey to try and steal their flags. Over 50 Fair A Success This year’s Over 50 Fair had a successful run on September 28th at the Melville Marriott. Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said she has received many positive comments from both attendees and exhibitors. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the
fullest. Gemma Kodumal, who attends the Over 50 Fair annually, said, “I was able to attend one class, Genomic Testing, and we all raved about it. We need to come earlier next time to be able to avail ourselves of other seminars.” This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer
Generation during the five years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. Some of the 30 classes available this year covered saving for retirement, iPad apps, stress reduction, meditation, legal hemp, comedy shows, and yoga. The free opportunities included
a health assessment, body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, hearing screenings, and a fiveminute hand or foot massage. Attendees also enjoyed no-charge valet parking. Cynthia Shaw of Helpful Care said, “This was our first year of exhibiting at Barbara’s Over 50 Fair. Each exhibitor felt a personal
connection with Barbara and each of us knew that she truly wanted us to be successful. We will certainly participate in ‘Barbara sponsored’ events in the future.” The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit, asked people to bring nonperishable food and cash donations to exchange for raffle tickets for valuable prizes. The INN was pleased to raise almost $300 and 88 pounds of food. Barbara’s other large event for children and their families, the All Kids Fair, will return on April 26 to the Melville Marriott.
