Future Is (Ful)Bright For POB Graduate The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce to the community that POB alumni Madalyn Fernbach, Class of 2015, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to Poland for the 2020-21 academic year. Madalyn will support the teaching of English at the University of Science and Technology in Bydgoszcz as part of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. The Fulbright Program is the ﬂagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and creates lasting connections between the people of the U.S. and other countries. Selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers not only academic and professional achievement, but leadership potential and records of service, Madalyn was one of 2,100 U.S. citizens who will teach English and form connections across

communities in both the U.S. and Poland. “Madalyn is a prime example of what POB students can accomplish,” said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “Nothing is more rewarding as an educator than hearing about the remarkable things our students achieve beyond the classroom. We wish Madalyn all the best on her journey to Poland.” Before studying neuroscience at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, Madalyn was heavily involved in extracurricular activities at POBJFKHS. Throughout her high school career, she was involved in student government and DECA, conducted her own independent research, was a participant in Relay for Life, and on top of it all, served as captain of the varsity soccer team. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces. Donations will be accepted through November 15th, and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined with the American Cancer Society to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month and remind Long Islanders to “Go Pink” by committing to screening, building awareness and raising funds for research and programs to support breast cancer survivors. The message is more important this year, as many breast cancer treatments, mammograms and other cancer screenings have been impacted by COVID-19. “One in 8 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Raising awareness about prevention is even more important this year since many people have put off routine checks and screenings because of COVID-19. Thanks to early detection,

better screening and treatment options deaths due to breast cancer are decreasing, let’s continue the progress and spread awareness and education,” said Nassau County Executive Curran. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 will die. In Nassau County alone there are approximately 1,295 cases of breast cancer annually, and 146 deaths annually. Rose Marie Walker. The American Cancer Society also announced a reimagining of their Annual Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk, the largest breast cancer event in the Country. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility, so voters should familiarize themselves with the candidates and issues on the ballot in the weeks leading up to Election Day. In addition to national or statewide candidates and issues, voters should learn about local issues that may have a more direct impact on their daily lives. The more voters learn about the candidates and issues in advance, the more quickly they can cast their votes and get to work or return home.

Election Day gives voters throughout the United States a chance to participate in their government. The right to vote is something to cherish, as many people across the globe do not get a chance to elect the officials who govern their countries. While Election Day is an exciting time, voters may find it frustrating if they do not take steps to ensure things go smoothly when they head to the polls. The following tips can help voters prepare for Election Day. Conﬁrm your polling location. Polling locations may have changed since last year, and voters who have moved in the past 12 months may now have to vote in a new location. This year, the event is all about raising money for those in need. Local independent restaurants are the backbone of our communities.
