A special one day event exploring the science of fire and ice takes place on Wednesday, October 14th, at 11 a.m. Fire & Ice, presented by Manhasset SEPTA Gifted/Talented programming, is open to all ages. The Mad Science show is held on the Superintendent’s Day when all students are off from school, but parents and students are invited to have a fun learning experience at Manhasset Public Library. Attendees will witness and learn about the amazing properties of fire, the cool off with spectacular demonstrations involving dry ice. Children from preschool to high school will love the ‘big burp,’ the ‘screwdriver sizzle’ and the famous ‘mad science shower’ displays while learning about the science behind them. The Mad Science show provides live, interactive and compelling educational

Students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District received a visit from exercise coaches who taught them the basics of CrossFit training. Students in kindergarten through second-grade participated in a series of light workouts led by

a team of trainers. The coaches showed students how to properly execute a variety of moves, how to maintain form and also discussed the importance of safety and patience. Students participated in activities such as push-ups, planks and squats during their CrossFit training

Hicksville Homecoming The Hicksville Council of PTA’s proudly announces that the 24th Annual Homecoming Fair will take place on Saturday, October 17th, at 10 a.m. We hope everyone will join in the fun at this wonderful community event. The Fair is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Hicksville High School’s John A. Walker Soccer Field. A number of fun activities will be featured, including attractions provided by Bounce Wow!, like a giant slide and an obstacle course plus many game booths courtesy of the individual PTA units and school clubs. Lunch can be purchased as you walk along the fairgrounds thanks to the Hicksville Athletic Booster Club and the generosity of Applebee’s. Snack items will be available for purchase at various booths during the day. The Homecoming Fair would not be complete without a parade! The 2015 Homecoming Parade will set off from the Hicksville High School courtyard at

approximately 12:45 p.m. showcasing the awardwinning Hicksville High School Marching Band, the energetic Kickline, our Color Guard, and Cheerleaders. The high school’s football team, the Comets, will kick off against Hempstead at 1:30 p.m. Gate admission is waived for this special community event; so plan to stay after the Fair and cheer our Comets to a homecoming victory! The Homecoming Fair is sponsored by the Hicksville Council of PTA’s. All profits from the individual PTA unit game booths, 50/50, and raffle baskets will be used to fund Homecoming Scholarships awarded each year to deserving Hicksville High School graduating seniors. In addition, the Hicksville Congress of Teachers, Booster Club, Band Parents Association, Hicksville Middle School National Junior Honor Society and more than 15 High School Activity clubs will participate in this district wide event. The Hicksville Building and

Grounds will be running two raffles, an IPad and a Kindle HD. There will also be a raffle to win a Samsung 32” Flat Screen TV generously donated by Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Homes. All raffle proceeds also go towards scholarships Game tickets are 4 for $2.00 and can be used at the various PTA unit game booths (1 ticket per game). Attractions like the Bounce House and Titanic Slide will require 4 tickets for each person or you may purchase a POP (pay one price) bracelet for $15.00 (POP bracelets are good only on attractions, not on game booths). As an early bird special, from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. purchase a POP bracelet for $15 and receive unlimited rides on the attractions and 10 free game tickets. In our hurried, demanding lives, we could all benefit from the slow, calm breathing and stretching poses of yoga. Even children could use a time-out that is noncompetitive and gets them to focus on themselves. Furthermore, by turning their focus inward children are able to better control their impulses and attention. Manhasset SEPTA answers the call with a free, unique yoga program designed especially for children ages 5 to 12 years old with learning, physical, or developmental challenges. Two four-week sessions of the special needs yoga classes will be held on Friday afternoons, starting on October 23rd. Held in the Manhasset Public Library’s Garden Room on the third floor, the program offers 45-minute classes from 4 to 4:45 p.m. for 5-8 year olds, and a second class at 5 p.m. for 9-12 year olds. The program runs from Friday, October 23rd to November 13th. Each class will emphasize breathing and relaxing techniques with stretching and fun posing, all set to soothing music to help kids understand and experience inner focus and body awareness. Children who practice yoga can, in fact, increase their concentration and focus, and command greater body flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. Through yoga games, guided imagery, and controlled breathing, they will learn relaxation and how to reduce stress themselves. Manhasset SEPTA, a local

Club Fair Held Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School recently held their annual Club Fair to introduce students to the multiple extracurricular activities available to them. Students of all grades attended this popular

event and had an opportunity to meet with advisors from school clubs including, “Grandpals,” “Lego Robotics,” “Math Olympiad,” “Girl Talk” and “Student Council.” H.B. Mattlin Middle School offers many valuable and diverse morning clubs to

Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the First Half of the 2015-2016 School Tax Levy is due on October 1st, but can be paid without penalty through November 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, and make it payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and Phone number on the check. “By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Mr. Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to October 1st.” “Tax Bills are expected be mailed in the beginning of October, after the collection warrant’s computer-based information is processed, verified and certified as correct by the Receiver’s Office.” “Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall

Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

Jakob Finkelstein (trumpet) and Ross Kliegman (oboe) are among 120 elite studentmusicians selected from schools throughout the country to perform in the All-National Concert Band. They join more than 670

students representing schools in 49 states and overseas military bases who will be performing in the four All-National Honor Ensembles – Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra and Mixed Choir – at this year’s NAfME conference, taking place from October 25th28th. The conference will consist of informative workshops and other rewarding experiences for student-musicians, culminating with the ensemble concerts on the final day. Learning to Skate Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this winter by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Michele M. Johnson. “Anyone interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities will be happy to learn that the ice skating center offers skating classes for residents all throughout the year,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Registration for Series 2 (November 1st through December 19th) will begin on October 18th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126.” The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels.

The program is seven weeks in length with the exception of Thursday and Friday classes which are prorated for six weeks. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. First Time French C’est tres bon for children in the community with beginner French, fun and food starting this fall at the Manhasset Public Library. Students in second to fifth grade are invited to join this free program

that runs on Mondays at 4 p.m. First Time French, a new program offered by Manhasset SEPTA’s Gifted/ Talented division, starts on October 19th and runs every Monday for seven weeks. Jessica Thalheimer

heads the program as part of earning a Girl Scout gold award. The program is held at the Manhasset Public Library on the third floor. Each session is one hour long, and the dates are October 19th
