Meet the Winners: 2021 Walk Safe Long Island Scholarship Walk Safe Long Island— the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety’s law-based pedestrian and bike safety campaign— has chosen the winners of its annual scholarship contest: Claire Levasseur of Nassau County and Jacob Harris of Suffolk County. Each recipient was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for their winning essay about a New York State Vehicle and Traffic law of their choosing. “Determining the scholarship recipients is always an extremely tough decision to make,” says Cynthia Brown, Executive Director of the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety (NYCTS). “All of the essays were very well written, but Claire and Jacob’s entries stood out to our panel of judges and received the highest combined scores.” This is Walk Safe Long

Island’s third consecutive annual scholarship contest, and first essay contest. In 2019, the contest called upon students to create and submit a video PSA about pedestrian safety. Last year’s scholarships were awarded to students who submitted the most unique and dynamic
poster highlighting one or more of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws for Pedestrian Enforcement. “I am extremely grateful to have received this scholarship,” said Ms. Levasseur, a recent graduate of Sanford H. Calhoun High School. “I want to thank the New
York Coalition of [sic] Transportation Safety for this amazing opportunity.” “I am very honored to receive this scholarship,” said Mr. Harris. “I think this scholarship is really vital, in that it brings to light importance in traffic safety, and how laws are designed to protect pedestrians.” Walk Safe Long Island’s essay contest is just one piece of the campaign’s mission to deliver lawbased pedestrian and bike safety education to Long Islanders. Walk Safe Long Island is produced for the NY Coalition for Transportation Safety, funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a Grant from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Bethpage Students Accepted Into National Honor Societies A trio of students from the Bethpage UFSD, all of whom attend Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was inducted into two distinguished national honor societies recently. Two students were inducted into the International Thespian Society (ITS), while one was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society (Tri-M). Nicholas Costanzo and Helen (Leah) Verschell were both inducted into the ITS, which has been honoring student achievement for nearly a century. The society’s four key principles are Pride, Affirmation, Confidence and Inspiration. As members, students receive national recognition, have access to a variety of resources, and are invited
to participate in state and national events, workshops, college and scholarship auditions. Among its legendary ranks are Kathy Bates, John Goodman, Tom Hanks, Goldie Hawn, Christina Hendricks, Barbara Hershey, Val Kilmer and Cloris Leachman, to name a few. Emily Morano earned acceptance into Tri-M, which was founded 85 years ago by the National Association for Music Education and, to this day, remains the only national honor society for music students. Its mission is to create future leaders in music education and advocacy. Candidates must meet a rigorous set of eligibility requirements in several categories including leadership, service character and academic achievement.
Curran Also Announces Veteran Picnic to Engage Younger Vets proud to soon be able to offer the specialized help that they need to get them through tough times,” said County Executive Curran. “Veterans experience unique behavioral and mental health issues and often need unique support to conquer them. With the new crisis counselor service, we will be able to provide the help our Vets need. County Executive Curran has once again fought to do the right thing for Nassau’s Vets and we thank her for her ongoing support,” said Ralph Esposito, Director of Nassau County Veterans Service Agency. The service will be free for all Veterans but will target Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans, who are 2.5x more likely to die by suicide. The crisis counselors will be licensed social workers specializing in veterans / military distress and will offer in person crisis intervention services, care coordination support and linkage to peer support services. These crisis counselors
will be trained to support veterans combatting mental illnesses, suicidal thoughts, substance use disorder and emotional distress. The program is being developed by the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and will be supported by American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding. Curran also announced a Veterans picnic, open to Veterans and their families, on October 23 from 11am to 2pm at Eisenhower Park. The event will have free food and entertainment as well as an array of support services available to Veterans in Nassau County. County Executive Curran also reminded the public of existing VSA programs, such as the Vet2Vet program. Vet2Vet is a nationally modeled program that aims to reduce Veteran Suicide and substance abuse through peer support. For information on any of the support services the VSA offers call: 516-5726565

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with local and police officials to encourage residents to support the ‘Back the Blue’ ribbon campaign in recognition of Police Appreciation Week, a national recognition celebration in honor of men and women in blue. Typically held in May but rescheduled due to pandemic restrictions, National Police Week honors law enforcement officers who service to protect the safety of our communities, as well as those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The Supervisor was joined by Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou
Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Assemblyman Michael Durso, 1st Vice President of the Superior Officers Association Edward J. Perkins and President of the Detectives Association John Wighaus. “The Town’s Blue Ribbon campaign encourages residents to show their support for men and women in blue by decorating their homes, businesses, storefronts or trees with blue ribbon,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We believe this message is especially as important as many of the Nassau County Police Department and NYPD officers living in our neighborhoods continue to face anti-
police sentiment and, even crazier, calls to defund the police.” “It’s thanks to these men and women that we have the quality of life that we do. Nassau’s VSA will soon be equipped with in-house social workers, specializing in assisting veterans with crisis counseling, substance abuse and other mental health related issues. Syosset Central School District is proud to announce that 13 Syosset High School students have been named Semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students qualified for this distinction by scoring among the highest in the state on the 2020 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). Congratulations to seniors Sabrina Chen, Ethan Chiu, Rohan Ghotra, Alex He, Caroline Hsu, Vivien Huang, Yuni Kim, Christine Ling, David
Liu, Shivaangi Salhotra, David Wang, Wesley Zhou and Caroline Zhu. They are among the approximately 16,000 high school students nationwide who were named Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), representing less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors. Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante congratulated the students saying, “We are so proud of our National Merit Semifinalists for all of their accomplishments, both in their classrooms and in the Syosset community.”
The Semifinalists have qualified to compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit scholarships totaling approximately $30 million. To advance as a finalist, the Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn qualifying SAT/ACT scores. Finalists will be announced in February 2022, with the National Merit Scholars to be named later in the spring.
Free Senior Citizen Activities & Programs Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens fall activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. Book Club, music, bingo, rummikub, line dancing, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through October 31st. “I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged as the weather gets crisper and cooler as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior fall activities are extremely popular, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!”

www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

up these eyesores, and we encourage residents to serve as our eyes and ears by using this reporting system to help.” Zombie homes are properties that have been vacant for an extended period of time and are often owned by a bank, trust, or mortgage company. Code Enforcement Bureau from the Department of Planning of Development continually monitor vacant properties, issue Notices of Violation against neglected properties, and take action to cleanup properties. With help from the public, the Town can better identify every existing eyesore within communities. Once a property has been identified as abandoned or an eyesore, Code Enforcement Officers inspect the property to assess the property. The Town explores all possible avenues to spur the owner to rehabilitate the property. Once all options have been exhausted, the Town will
seek legal remedies to demolish eyesore in the community. “The objective of the Town’s Zombie Home Program is to ensure the Town of Oyster Bay continues to be a highly desirable community to live, work and raise a family,” added Supervisor Saladino said. “This new, online registry will help our Department of Planning and Development enhance their tracking of eyesores. Residents Encouraged to Dispose of Unwanted Cords, Cables, and Wires at Town Hall Through October 15th To help reduce the amount of dangerous e-waste in our landfills, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh has partnered with Girl Scout Gold Award Candidate Joan Olivero to host a Cord Collection Drive. Residents are encouraged to dispose of unwanted or unused cords, cables, and wires at Town Halls North and South through October 15th. “Disposing of cords, cables, wires, and other electronic devices through regular garbage or recycle collection is extremely dangerous, as e-waste contaminates our environment, has been linked to health issues in humans and animals, and affects the safety of food production,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Unfortunately, e-waste is the world’s fastest growing solid waste stream and is predicted to double by
2050, which is why our community must take action to reduce e-waste.” While the Town already invites residents to bring e-waste to the Solid Waste Disposal Complex in Old Bethpage, this partnership will make disposal even more convenient. Backflow Device Testing Program Required To Protect Plainview’s Water System
Residents Must Test Their Backflow System Annually, Deadline for Test Compliance Submission is December 31, 2021 The Plainview Water District (PWD) would like to remind residents that the New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) and Nassau County Health Department require testing on backflow devices. This compliance testing must be performed by a certified professional, and is extremely important in ensuring the safety of Plainview-Old Bethpage’s water supply. “Having a proper, functioning backflow system is necessary to
prevent contaminants from entering the District’s distribution system,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Weed killers, fertilizers, and other lawn products will not find their way back into the public water supply after a period of low pressure with a certified backflow device.” Backflow devices are mechanical doublecheck valves that prevent the water flow from reversing during a loss of water pressure. This loss can be caused by
firefighter use or a water main break. These devices must be tested annually to make certain they are installed and functioning properly. Backflow devices prevent pollution and contamination of the public water supply during times of fluctuating pressure. Residents need a backflow device if they have: inground sprinklers, fire lines, swimming pools, or a private well that is interconnected with the public water supply to name a few conditions. “Slight water
pressure changes in the distribution system is not uncommon during the year due to differing water demands,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “If a backflow device is not properly installed, chemicals and other pollutants can easily infiltrate our community’s water. It is important to heed the Department of Health’s warnings and get your device tested to help you and your neighbors avoid any potential dangers with our community’s water supply.”
The District encourages residents to arrange for a NYSDOH certified backflow tester to conduct their annual backflow test and avoid any penalties for noncompliance. The Plainview Water District keeps an upto-date list of New York State licensed backflow testers on its website, www.plainviewwater.org/ resources/backflow/. The District also maintains its own dedicated Cross-Connection Control Department to help residents with
compliance questions that can be reached at 516-931-6469. The Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates: Exemplary HighPerforming Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally
normed tests. Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students. Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites National Blue Ribbon Schools nominations
from the top education official in all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education.

Hicksville High School senior Amber Corbett has been named a Merit Award winner in the Long Island Scholar Artist program for the 2021-2022 school year. Corbett is one of nine students to be recognized in the visual arts category. The Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday sponsors the program
each year, honoring up to 40 high school seniors from Nassau and Suffolk counties in the fields of dance, media arts, music, theater and visual arts. Districts can nominate students who are exceptionally accomplished in their field and hold an unweighted GPA of 90 or above. Nominated students
