Club Fair Held Harry B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset recently held its annual Club Fair to inform students about the wide variety of before- and after-school opportunities available. Advisers and club members shared information with prospective members
hoping to spark interest and provide them with enriching options to learn a new skill, express their creativity or take their academic strengths beyond the regular curriculum. There are currently 28 clubs available at the school covering different areas including

Fall & Halloween Festival Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s eighth annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, located at 451 Unqua Road, Massapequa. “Once again, this annual free event invites residents to come out and celebrate the arrival of fall and Halloween with activities that are fun for children and adults alike,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The Family Fall & Halloween Festival will feature a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin
patch for children to pick out their own pumpkin, Halloween crafts, a hay maze, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. Costumes for those attending are encouraged and residents can bring their already carved pumpkins to be judged in this year’s Carved Pumpkin Contest.” The Supervisor noted that this event will be held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services. Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often
do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Scholars Honored More than 100 current and former Bethpage High School students have been recognized by the College Board as AP Scholars due to their outstanding success on Advanced Placement exams. Students took the exams in May 2016 after completing challenging college-level courses in the district in a variety of subjects. According to the College Board’s website, the AP Program offers willing and academically prepared students the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP exams. Girl Scout Green The Girl Scouts of Nassau County culminated a 7-month volunteer program at The Farm at Oyster Bay with the 7th annual Harvest Celebration. During the celebration, Girl Scout Gardeners (levels Daisy to Cadette) and Under Gardeners (levels Seniors and Ambassadors) helped harvest potatoes, eggplant, peppers, squash and collected the seeds
for next year’s planting. The girls also celebrated the fall season by making scarecrows and jack-olanterns. Throughout the program the Girl Scouts learned the importance of giving back as all food grown and collected at The Farm of Oyster Bay is donated to local food pantries across Long Island. The Under Gardeners, were honored at the
celebration with their community service bars for leading younger Girl Scouts at The Farm. Each girl gave at least 20 hours of community service to helping maintain The Farm, but many girls strive to exceed that number. In return, the Girl Scouts thanked Amanda Roberts, the Garden Manager of the harvest program for her work with the girls.

Kap(ss) 4 Kid(ss) In honor of Submariners who gave their lives for their country , the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) celebrates Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week. November 7th through 13th, Note: The (SS) is a military specialty designator, signifying a sailor is “Qualified in Submarines” Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week is celebrated annually during the week that includes Veterans Day, and provides a special period where Submarine Veterans from USSVI Bases (chapters) bring comfort and joy to sick children. The USSVI has over 13,000 members in 164 Bases in the US. Year round, US Submarine Veterans visit children in Children’s
Hospitals, Cancer Hospitals, Hospices, Child Psychiatric Facilities, Ronald McDonald Houses, and Camps for Children with medical challenges, in essence, any place where a child is medically challenged. During the visits they make the children Honorary Submariners. Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) is a USSVI Community Outreach Program whose goal is to bring smiles to children battling challenging medical conditions, anywhere they are being treated. US Submarine Veterans voluntarily do this by giving these children caring attention, Honorary Submariner caps, certificates, photos of
submarines and submarine related items during visits. The Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Program is part of the United States Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation (USSVCF). The USSVCF is the charitable arm of USSVI. It was formed to further the purpose of the USSVI by assuming the responsibility of some USSVI activities which are charitable in nature. The USSVI purpose, in part, is to “Perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country.” The Long Island Base Kapss4Kidss next visit will be October 26th, 2016 at Good Samaritan Hospitals Child Care Unit.

The Fuoco family, alongside The Rotary Club of Patchogue, hosted the 47th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club on Thursday, September 15th. Funds raised from the tournament and dinner will benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a year-long respite for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities. More than $1.4 million has been raised by the Golf Feastival to support the camp since its inaugural event in 1969. This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests. Participants in the daylong golf outing partook in a variety of “Food Feastivals,” for which the event is named. Italian “Feastival Stands” lined the course with options such as meatballs and clams, pasta and wine,
sausage and peppers, an Italian kitchen and Gourmet Deli, a specialty oyster bar, Zeppolas and Cannolis, gourmet pizza and craft beer. In addition, there were contests for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin” on every hole. Brown’s Automotive Group also sponsored a “Hit the Green” challenge on every par 3, a putting contest on the 19th hole and a holein-one prize car. This year’s honorees are the partners of the law firm Rizzi, Schwarz and Tarakas, LLP, who have been continual supporters of the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival. Event founder Buddy Fuoco and the firm’s founding partner, Vitro Rizzi, were close friends for several years. After Rizzi’s passing, his colleagues and surviving firm partners, Robert Schwarz, Janice Taraskas and Helen Butera, have continued his legacy of providing a steadfast commitment to community and volunteerism. The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection
with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck began with event cochairman Steve Fuoco’s sister, Beth Ann FuocoSantos, who attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21. The Fuoco family established the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival in 1969 to raise funds for the camp, to ensure that people like Beth Ann are provided the opportunity to have memorable and educational summer experiences. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity and independence in a safe and supportive educational environment. Throughout the program, campers participate in activities such as arts and crafts, music, cook-outs, swimming, and boating. The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum Committee announced today that due to financial constraints the Lighthouse Tower and Keepers dwelling will not be lit this year during the holiday season. This of course does not mean the mariners beacon atop the Lighthouse tower which has warned sailors since 1797. Dick White, Chair of the Committee, stated, “When we took over the Lighthouse in 1986, we
committed ourselves to the care and maintenance of the now 220 year-old Long Island icon. We have significant ongoing and future costs ahead of us in repair and maintenance of not only the Lighthouse Tower and Museum, but the revetment holding up the bluff on which our beautiful beacon stands. The Montauk Lighthouse is a self-funding not-forprofit entity, relying solely on our wonderful patrons to support our site, tours and operations. The annual
cost of just lighting the Lighthouse for the holiday season is about $50,000. Our first responsibility is to the care and upkeep of “The Light.” We would wholeheartedly welcome a kind benefactor to step forward before November 1st with the amount necessary to pay for the lighting.
