Bethpage High School senior Nicholas Timoshenko has been chosen to perform in the New York State School Music Association’s AllState Electronic Music Composition Showcase at the annual winter conference this November. Nicholas’s musical composition was one of eight chosen by judges from a large pool of submissions from across New York. In addition to his performance on Nov. 30, he has been asked to give a brief discussion about his composition to the audience. into the curriculum while advocating for a balanced approach to educating the whole child. OCR’s Positive Behavioral Instructional Supports enabled the faculty and staff to recognize and promote positive behaviors to encourage children to reach their personal best. Lubrano also welcomed the bilingual program to the district as an opportunity to educate children in grades kindergarten through second grade. As a member of several district committees including curriculum, policy, safety and SiteBase, Lubrano immersed himself in the fabric of the Hicksville School District. As a lifelong learner, he is pursuing a doctoral degree in Interdisciplinary Educational Studies at Long Island University. During the upcoming months, Lubrano looks forward to continuing the tradition of excellence in Hicksville and getting to know the many teachers and staff who work to meet the academic and social needs of our students. Lubrano began his professional career as a litigation legal assistant at Sullivan & Cromwell before pursuing a teaching career at the elementary and middle school levels in New York City and Long Island. As a reading specialist, his interest is in empowering students to enjoy reading and to develop the literacy skills necessary to participate in our democracy. Actress Andie MacDowell’s appeal is in her ethereal glow. From her crown of dark cascading curls to her porcelain complexion and delicate features, MacDowell’s sweet yet sultry sensuality captivated moviegoing audiences with hits like Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Green Card, Groundhog’s Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral. She has always played the woman of great desire who orbits just outside of the male lead’s reach... that is, until he figures out how to win her over.

As Andie tells it, her “it girl” status throughout the late eighties and the whole of the nineties was a thrill ride, but left her feeling torn between an A-List career and being a hands-on mom to her three children. It was then that she resolved to stop making movies back-to-back, but to choose her projects more carefully, to be sure the role was worth time away from her family. Over the last eighteen years, MacDowell has continued to work steadily, choosing roles that move her, make her think, and those that allow her to unpack her more provocative side. In 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, MacDowell played Nancy, the flirtatious older woman who unapologetically has her way with Joe Manganiello’s character. It’s safe to say that at this stage in MacDowell’s career she is doing anything but playing it safe on screen. Allison Kugel: Do you feel a sense of relief that the kinds of roles you’re getting to play now are more character-driven, as opposed to the young female lead that you played in the nineties?

Andie MacDowell: I’m thankful for all the jobs I’ve had, and I’ve gotten to do some great parts. I don’t have any regrets, and I think those roles suited me at that age and time. I think as you get older, you are a character (laughs). You have a lot more depth by the time you’re my age, because you’ve had to struggle. My life has not been a piece of cake. I understand what it is to have a complex life. Allison Kugel: Your latest movie, Love After Love, is about grieving and finding your way back after the loss of a loved one. What are the things that you turn to when the ground starts to shake beneath your feet? Andie MacDowell: Oh, I’m always looking for my center. I hike a lot, and I like to be in nature around trees. I love to ride horses… Allison Kugel: Me too! Andie MacDowell: Do you? They say that it has a physical effect on you. Allison Kugel: I believe that. I always say that riding horses is my yoga. People are always bugging me to do yoga and it’s not really my thing. Riding gives me that meditative feeling. Andie MacDowell: I should be riding right now. It’s soothing and calming, it lowers your cortisol levels. Being around animals, in general, is really comforting. Allison Kugel: What do you teach your kids about emotional and spiritual resiliency? Andie MacDowell: They are spiritual,

which I am thankful for. I put no pressure on them to believe anything that I believe, but I think it’s healthy to have spirituality in your life. My children are very peace-seeking people, and love-seeking people. To me, God is love, so they are headed in the right direction. Allison Kugel: In your earlier career, you were doing movie after movie – Sex, Lies, and Videotape; Green Card; Groundhog’s Day; Four Weddings and a Funeral – and all eyes were on you. What did that moment in time feel like for you? Andie MacDowell: I could have done a lot more, but one year I did three movies in a year and I realized that I could not be a good mother and do that many movies. I was so popular, and I was so young. I could usually decide when I wanted to work and go find a job; it was that easy. And I would always try to do one independent [film] and one studio film. That would be my goal each year. Life was great. I have to say it was wonderful to be in that position. Allison Kugel: And then you entered your forties. Andie MacDowell: Yes, it’s true. People would keep saying to me when I would get interviewed, “How does it feel to turn forty and know that you’re not going to work anymore?” And it really was… kind of like a light switch. Allison Kugel: In the early years of your career, did you ever have a #MeToo moment? Andie MacDowell: I didn’t ever have sexual problems in the context of my career. I had #MeToo issues, but not in the business. What I find equally as important as the #MeToo movement, is that I strongly believe this is the first time we have had any voice. Women have always been accused of being too emotional. If you’ve studied therapy, early on according to Carl Jung, a woman who wanted to be independent was crazy. That’s how far we have had to come. Just to be independent, not too long ago, we were called insane. There are so many social issues right now that are really important. My hope is that every aspect of how we have been diminished is going to be opened up. People will see and question why they would have to ask a woman the question that they asked me when I turned forty, and yet not ask it of a man. It’s important that we take a hard look at that.

Allison Kugel: How do you define “happy?” Andie MacDowell: I think happiness is peace of mind. It’s definitely not superficial. Happiness is not a big house. I’ve had a big house and I’ve had a small house, and I think I was happier in the smaller house. Happiness is never going to be things. Allison Kugel: What do you believe in, and who or what do you pray to? Andie MacDowell: Ha! I pray to a very liberal Jesus. I grew up going to church and it was a warm environment where my mother played the organ and my favorite song was Jesus Loves the Little Children. It’s such a corny little song, but I love it. “All the children of the world; black and yellow, red and white; they’re all precious in His sight; Jesus loves the little children of the world.” I grew up going to Sunday school and sang that song, and it was sweet. It’s nothing to do with politics or any concept that everybody has unfortunately thrown onto my concept of who He is. Allison Kugel: How are you going to ring in your sixtieth birthday? Andie MacDowell: I’m going to be working, which is what I like to do! That’s a good thing. I want to do something special. Maybe I’ll go to India. I’ve been wanting to go to India for a long time. Allison Kugel: What do you think this new decade will bring into your life? Andie MacDowell: I know what I hope it brings. I would like to do more spiritual work. Go listen to Ram Dass talk, and Marianne Williamson; go to a yoga retreat and cultivate

every aspect of myself so that I can continue to work on peace of mind. As you get older, I feel like if you’re going down the right road there is this clarity that you can see in your eyes. It’s a gentleness that is the most beautiful aspect a human can have. That is my goal, to continue to work on that gentle side of myself.

Don’t You Get Nervous? “There is no right way, only the right reason.” - Unknown For those who are familiar with my work interviewing public figures, I am often asked, “Don’t you get nervous to speak to these people?” Or, “Is it ever intimidating?” No, I don’t. And no, it’s not. People are shocked to hear that no matter who I sit down with, what awards they have won or how many people know their name, I do not experience the feeling of intimidation. It’s occurred to me over time that the reason my answer confuses people is because they don’t understand my perspective on the human experience. I think it’s about time I share my philosophy, because I want you to be empowered by it in your own life. Here is my secret... The reason I feel equal to any public figure I interview or meet is because we are all here in this earth school to learn. If you didn’t have a lot to learn, you likely wouldn’t be here. You’d be on some higher plain of existence somewhere, in some other dimension, and most

likely not on earth. Don’t take it personally. I’m here too! This goes for any of us. No matter our race or ethnicity, gender or sexuality, socio-economic status, education or level of notoriety, we are all here in this earth school because our soul still has much to learn. This knowing allows me to see everyone I meet as a fellow student on a collective journey. We’ve all signed up for different experiences based on what our soul came here to learn this go around. Since we have all learned different lessons based on our unique life experiences, every one of us has, both, things to learn and things to teach. As the late Maya Angelou said, “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” That is how I view my work as a journalist who interviews notable figures. I feel they have much to teach, as do I… as do you. But just like any of us, they also have much to learn, or they wouldn’t be here. I can’t tell you how many times I have been engaged in conversation with someone who

is seen by the world as extremely successful and accomplished, and I will share a thought or observation that stops them in their tracks. They will say to me, “Wow! I never thought of it that way. Thank you for sharing that.” Some of the world’s most successful people understand that listening and learning is every bit as important as sharing and teaching. They understand the exchange of energy that flows between two human beings when both open up and allow it to happen. No matter how you see your station in life as this moment, be open to learning from those who are where you want to be, but do not ever think for a second that you do not have valuable insights to share, and something of great importance to teach. Be open. Be willing to learn as well as to teach. Be willing to receive as well as to give. And be selective with whom you share your gifts. Most importantly, be yourself, because what you bring to the table is truly unique and cannot be duplicated by another.

NYU Winthrop to Host “Love Is In The Air” Gala Fundraising for cancer care will take flight on Wednesday, February 6th, when NYU Winthrop Hospital hosts its third annual “Love is in the Air” event from 6:30 - 10:30 pm at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. Proceeds from the event will support NYU Winthrop’s Center for Cancer Care, and work to enhance patient care,

support survivorship programs, and support technology and research advancements. Area residents are encouraged to “show the love” by supporting this all-important cause, as each year more than 18,000 Long Islanders, on average, are faced with the challenges of cancer. “Every day, we strive to improve early detection

of cancers, foster the development of advanced treatments, and seek to maintain the quality of life of our cancer patients,” said Eva Chalas, MD, Physician Director of NYU Winthrop’s Cancer Center. ‘Love is in the Air’ helps us realize these important objectives, providing funds that directly benefit patient care and well-being.” The fun-filled evening

will feature a cabaret show in the museum’s domed IMAX theatre, cocktail dining in a lounge atmosphere, a DJ and dancing. Cradle of Aviation galleries will be open for guests to enjoy. The museum boasts more than 75 air and spacecraft from a hot air balloon to an actual Apollo Lunar Module. The Center for Cancer Care provides

multidisciplinary comprehensive cancer care, and has a robust infrastructure to support patients, their caregivers and the hospital’s staff. Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Megan Winner, and her team, have developed a new interdepartmental platform capable of extracting relevant data, leveraging multiple electronic sources of

Central Boulevard Elementary School, in the Bethpage Union Free School District, carried an old tradition into a new school year when it held its first Thoughtful Thursday of 2018-2019, on September 27th. This month’s lesson focused on ways to “choose kind.” Teachers led their

classes in discussions about the ways to be kind to each other and the community. The book We’re All Wonders, by R.J. Palacio was the focus of discussion in Kristen Ghisone’s kindergarten class. Meanwhile, Barbara Cataldi, and her fourthgrade class, worked in groups to create banners

on five ways to be kind as a class. They then decorated individual balloons on how to be kind as a person. The entire school came together to wear Thoughtful Thursday shirts with #ChooseKind on the back to spread the theme of the month.

Jordan Coene of the Levittown UFSD, who is studying musical theater at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was recently named a Merit Award Winner in the ScholarArtist competition, held by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing musical theater student and for superior academic achievement. Jordan Coene has been involved in theater since she was eight years old and is known as a “triple threat” – a talented actress, singer and dancer. She is not only a devoted student at LIHSA, but has attended

the school’s Summer Arts Academy for a number of years. As the name of the competition implies, she is a scholar as well as an artist, maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average. “LIHSA is not only my school, but my home,” Jordan said. “It is my safe place – a place of hard work and artistic freedom.” She credits the school with helping her to grow as a performing artist, having taught her that acting is not a craft you can ever know completely, because there is always something more to learn. “We gain new wisdom and experiences every day, that can alter our methods and allow us to work in new and different ways.” For Jordan, what makes LIHSA great is its faculty. “I am fortunate to be able to work every day with kind, supportive, extremely talented teachers,” she said. “They are constantly pushing me to strive to do my best and they help me to understand the truth of my work; that the process is what counts in the end.”

Next fall, Jordan plans to attend college, where she’ll study musical theater. She intends to follow a career path that will lead her to perform either on a Broadway stage, or in film and television. She also hopes to pursue her passion as a scriptwriter. “We are all extremely proud of Jordan and her impressive achievements,” said Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker, Principal of LIHSA. “Arts are essential to education. As Long Island’s top arts school, it is our mission to provide a nurturing environment that exposes students to experiences and opportunities they would not have anywhere else. We empower young artists to achieve their full potential, both in the classroom and in their chosen disciplines. Three Hicksville High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Rohil Agarwal, Catherine Chen and Snehadri Das. Catherine, Rohil and Snehadri qualified as semifinalists by scoring among the highest in the state on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year, ranking among the top 1 percent nationally. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awarded

this distinction to approximately 16,000 high school students nationwide. Semifinalists will now compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Finalists will be announced in February, with the winners to be named in the spring. Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered this spring. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 scholarships of $2,500. About 1,000

corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 230 corporations and business organizations, and roughly 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,000 college-sponsored awards for finalists who will attend their respective institutions.
