Without the dedication of these people who collect donations year round and attend the WalkAlong for Lupus every year, the Alliance would not be able to provide the support services that are so desperately needed by families in our local area. The Lupus Alliance of LIQ, home of the WalkAlong for Lupus, Long Island’s first and longest running lupus walk, will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary Walk-Along for Lupus on October 20th. The walk will be held in Eisenhower Park, Field #6, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m., and the walk beginning at 10 a.m., rain or shine. The minimum registration donation is $20; for a $50 donation, the walker also receives a T-shirt, a for a donation of $500 or more, the walker receives a Visa Gift Card. The Walk-Along for Lupus is a fun-filled day for the whole family that includes breakfast, lunch, live music, give-aways from sponsors and more. Picnic tables are set up for families to gather together and enjoy the day, as well as mingle with others who, like them, have lupus, or love someone who does. The Lupus Alliance of LIQ was established in 1955, is a 501c3 non-profit based on Long Island, and is the only locally based agency that offers services to those living with lupus, and their families, in the Nassau, Suffolk and Queens areas. On Thursday, September 26th, Nassau Community College marketing students were treated to a very unusual learning experience. Courtesy of Ferrari-Maserati of Long Island, Guest Professors Laura Lee Fisher, events director, and her Associate, Flavio Gauna, arrived on campus in a red Ferrari and white Maserati. After a 40-minute lecture titled, “The Art Of Marketing Luxury Automobiles,” students

were invited for a “photoop” to take videos and pictures to share with friends on Facebook and Instagram. According to Professor Mandel, “This event transformed textbook theory into a very real and exciting learning experience. I’m sure this day will long be remembered by students.” The Nassau Community College “Guest Professor For A Day” program was instituted by Professor

Mandel in 1980. Scores of business, media and sports professionals have spoken to students. Previous “Guest Professors” have included Charles Wang, owner of the New York Islanders, Linda McMahan, CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment Brandon Steiner of Steiner Sports Collectibles; Don Vultaggio, Chairman of Arizona Beverages; and Frank Boulton, CEO of the Long Island Ducks, to name just a few.

Choosing The Right College

No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing

where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective

college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair took place on Sunday, September 29th at the Melville Marriott to a crowd of over 600. The one-day expo was once again organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50. To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there was free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who needed one, compliments of Patriot Mobility Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who will once again organize Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair on April 27th. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there was “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added. Some of the speakers were new this year,

but many old favorites returned. Classes included two comedy shows, Zumba, laughter yoga, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones, essential oils, and iPad apps. Almost 100 exhibitors participated by offering a broad spectrum of services and products relevant to baby boomers and seniors, including local medical and dental practices, financial experts, and providers of education, travel services, hypnosis, weight loss, vitamins, in-home care, and even psychic readings. Meditation classes took place all day. Jackie DelleGrazie of New Hyde Park commented that the best thing about the Over 50 Fair was “the variety of exhibitors. There was so much to see that I will have to go earlier next time to get to all of them,” she said, despite spending 3-4 hours there. The Fair’s slogan, “60 is

the new 50!” summarized the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest. Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them. Many can be found at the Over 50 Fair.” Free health screenings were available, such as body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and oxygen saturation. Other cardiac testing was also available from Advanced Cardiovascular Diagnostics. Food samples were provided by Mio Posto Italian Restaurant, Mulberry Street of Babylon, and Love & Quiches Gourmet. The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit, handled the raffles. Attendees donated 120 pounds of nonperishable food and over

Moving Right Along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

Four of the top talents from the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts are among 20 Long Island seniors to be named 2013-2014 Scholar-Artists. Sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Newsday, the ScholarArtist Award honors students for outstanding academic achievement and excellence in the arts. Scholar-Artists are profiled in Newsday and honored at LIAA’s annual gala. They are also eligible for scholarships to several Long Island colleges. Taylor Brahms (East Williston UFSD) who earned the Award of Merit and Lisa Naso (North Shore UFSD) were recognized for their theatre performance, Emilia Bunich (Roslyn UFSD) and Gianna Raimi (Massapequa UFSD) for their talent in dance. Taylor Brahms has taken every opportunity to explore her love of the theater. Beyond her dedication to her beloved LIHSA, she has pursued a variety of theater programs, such as Northwestern University’s intensive summer institute. In considering colleges, her focus is on conservatories and schools with strong theater programs. And while she adores the stage,

Taylor says she is interested in every aspect of theater, from writing to crew work. “I love the theater,” she professes. “It allows me to be myself. I can’t see myself anywhere else,” she says. “It’s where I’m meant to be.” The young actress is grateful for the intensive instruction she gets from LIHSA. “It’s such a blessing to be here,” she says of the school. “It’s an amazing opportunity.” Emilia Bunich has been dancing since the fourth grade, and through the years has discovered a love and aptitude for a wide variety of dance including ballet, modern and jazz. Her time at LIHSA has helped her to not only hone her talents, but to widen her palette even further, with master classes in challenging styles like hip-hop and African tribal dance. “As long as I’m dancing, I’ll be happy,” says Emilia, whose future aspirations range from performing with a professional dance company to teaching. With regard to being named a Scholar-Artist, Emilia says, “It’s an honor to be recognized for my academic achievement as well as my art.” Lisa Naso embraces all facets of the theater, having explored everything

from community theater to dance. This coming year she plans to try her hand at musical theater. As she applies to colleges, she is focusing her attention on theater programs. “I always want acting to be a part of my life,” Lisa says, “in whatever way that happens to be.” The Scholar-Artist is as devoted to her academics as she is to her craft and is pleased that the award reflects that. “I appreciate the performance aspect,” she says, “but I’m equally honored by the ‘scholar’ part of it. My grades are really important to me.” Gianna Raimi’s love of dance can be traced back to her childhood, when she first started dancing in The Nutcracker. She has performed it every year since, even in the coveted role of the Sugar Plumb Fairy. This might explain Gianna’s preference for ballet. Or it might be her competitive nature. “I like the discipline of ballet,” she says. “You have to strive for perfection.” While she hopes to join a professional ballet company one day, she has explored a number of other forms of dance. “Dance has exposed me to the amazing talent in the world,” she says.

Fall Wildlife Festival

The Fall Wildlife Festival will take place at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, located within the West End of Jones Beach State Park, on Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s festival theme is: Water: Every Drop Counts. The day will include a variety of water-themed children’s activities and displays from

Long Island 5K Vision Walk

Hundreds touched by vision loss will rally to fight blindness at the Long Island 5K VisionWalk on Saturday, October 12th at Jones Beach State Park. This year, dozens of teams are striving to raise $140,000 to support promising gene therapy, stem cell, and pharmaceuticalbased research that could save and even restore sight. Blinding retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and Usher syndrome affect more than 10 million Americans, but the Foundation Fighting Blindness is funding cutting-edge studies toward preventions, treatments and cures. “Since the inception of our VisionWalk 7 years ago, the Foundation Fighting Blindness has funded retinal disease research that has brought once elusive treatments and cures out of the laboratory and into human clinical trials, restoring sight,” said Karen Montagnese, Long Island VisionWalk

Co-Chair. “These are inherited diseases, so the work we do now will have a sight-saving effect on generations to come,” she added. Also participating in this year’s VisionWalk are 9 year-old Gianna Motto and her 11 year-old sister, Nicolette, of Islip Terrace. At three months old, Gianna was diagnosed with nystagmus and achromatopsia, a retinal degenerative disease that leads to progressive vision loss. Gianna is still able to see close up, but she has no peripheral vision and cannot see facial expressions. In an effort to support VisionWalk, the sisters created their own fundraiser, selling handmade earrings and sporting their own slogan: Fight for Gianna’s Sight. “As regular sisters, they argue and fight. Yet, when it comes time for martial arts class and fundraising, they put all the sibling rivalry aside and become a team,” said their mother, Monique Motto. Nicolette and Gianna participate in weekly

adaptive martial arts classes, with the help of Third Eye Insight, an organization in West Islip devoted to physical fitness for the blind and visually impaired. Gianna dreams of a day when she can learn to drive, but until then, she and her sister want to help other visually impaired children get involved in sports. Hundreds of walkers, many of whom are affected by retinal disease, are expected at the free VisionWalk, which also includes children’s activities, a bounce house, refreshments, entertainment, and more. Dogs and strollers are welcome on the 3.1 mile walk course. Event leaders include Co-Chairs Wren and Jim McNiel and Karen and Nick Montagnese;, Youth Chair Nick McNiel; , and Media Chair Krista Giannak. Since the VisionWalk program started in 2006, tens of thousands have participated in events across the country to raise more than $28 million for blindness research.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 33rd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational on September 23rd and brought in more than $200,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 170 golfers teed-off at The Creek and Piping Rock Clubs in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Key sponsors included: The Jobin Organization; The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation; BaumEssex Manufacturing; Seafield Center; Moritt Hock & Hamroff; Murray Hill Suites; Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty; Hirshleifers; and Astoria Federal Savings. Former WABC News Sports Anchor Scott Clark, who served as event emcee and auctioneer, began the Diamonds in the Rough Reception and Dinner at The Creek. He spoke of his

personal experiences with alcoholism and addressed the importance of the services LICADD provides to children and families on Long Island. Mr. Clark helped energize the crowd throughout the award ceremony and live auction and encouraged guests to donate generously to combat the growing crises of abuse, addiction and drug-related fatalities in our communities. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding its 16th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program, open to young hunters on Long Island ages 12 to 15, on November 2nd and November 9th and 10th, Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The program is a collaboration with the New York Conservation Officers Association; Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation; Shikar Safari Club International; Ducks Unlimited; and South Shore Waterfowlers Association. The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for November 2nd. Youth Waterfowl Days, which are specially designated hunting days, are set for November 9th and 10th. The Youth Waterfowl Program is a special event

to help junior hunters prepare for and participate in the Youth Waterfowl Days. The program includes instruction in: · Hunting ethics and regulations · Waterfowl identification · Firearms safety review · Retriever and decoy use · Cold water survival and boating safety · Trap shooting Certified sportsman education instructors, as well as DEC environmental conservation officers (ECOs), will guide participants through the program and help youth hunters become part of the long tradition of waterfowl hunting on Long Island. All new applicants must attend an instructional day at Hubbard County Park in Flanders on November 2nd, which will qualify them for the option of hunting at Hubbard County Park in Flanders or Southaven County Park in Yaphank on November

9th, and anywhere hunting is allowed on November 10th. Participants must be 12 to 15 years of age by November 9th, have completed a hunter education course by November 2nd, possess a junior (small game) hunting license by November 9th and be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP). This fall, the Gold Coast Arts Center will present the 3rd Annual Gold Coast International Film Festival (GCIFF) from October 21st through 27th. Everyone’s invited for another round of fantastic films, parties, panels, and fanfare. Since GCIFF’s inception, the festival and yearround film series have successfully brought the latest Hollywood hits and Indie favorites to the North Shore of Long Island--along with A-list celebrities and unforgettable events. Music For Life Fundraiser success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson announced that the Town is beginning to accept nomination forms for the 16th Annual Women of Distinction awards program. “Each year, the Town has the privilege of honoring designated ‘Women of Distinction’ in each of eight categories,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Winners will be recognized in March 2014 in celebration of Women’s History Month.” The Councilwoman noted that anybody who would like to submit a candidate for the “Women of Distinction” need only fill out a nominating form and submit to the Town. Nominating forms have been distributed to libraries throughout the Town. They can also be found at Town Hall or can be downloaded from the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “Anybody is welcome to submit an application, including those who have done so in the past

Two days after Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Principal Kerri McCarthy held a special celebration for staff, students, administrators and Board of Education members. Other participating NICE operators were Richard Kubik of Seaford and Joseph Springer of Brentwood. The City of Long Beach sent operator Robert Herbst. Operators from across the state qualified for the state championship by performing well in their regional Roadeo’s. Drivers compete in a series of events, including conducting proper pretrip vehicle inspections and knowledge of industry standard safety habits. Finally, operators test their driving abilities in a timed

Veteran NICE (Nassau Inter-County Express) bus operator Pat Piegari of Lindenhurst won top honors at the statewide bus “Roadeo” championship, an annual bus drivers’ skills and knowledge competition held recently at Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach. This is the first time the competition, sponsored by the New York State Public Transit Association, has been held on Long Island. The annual Roadeo, celebrating its 26th year, tests some of the state’s best bus operators, while promoting safety, driving skills and professionalism. Other participating bus systems included City of Long Beach, Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, Ulster County Area Transit, R o c h e s t e r- G e n e s e e Regional Transportation Authority, Capital District Transportation Authority and Tompkins County Consolidated Area Transit.
