An impressive total of 167 Syosset studentathletes joined 25,000 others from the TriState area and beyond to show their pride in their country and raise a significant amount of money for an important cause. Members of the Syosset High School Braves girls and boys crosscountry teams, girls and boys soccer programs, football team, kickline squad, girls swimming team and girls volleyball team participated in the annual Tunnel to Towers Run on September 27th. The 5K run traces the footsteps of fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who strapped on his gear and ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001 to help save lives, ultimately losing his own. The event raises money to construct specially adapted smart homes for the most catastrophically injured first responders and service members. This is the 13th year Syosset High School athletes have fundraised for the cause. The group sported T-shirts that read “Syosset Braves — Proud to be an athlete! Proud to be an American!” Even more remarkable than the student turnout was the amount of money raised by the Syosset athletes for Tunnel to Towers– $10,480, which brings the school’s 13year total to just over $80,000. “All the athletes and coaches did a phenomenal job…it was a great day to be a Brave,” said Diane Malley, a business education teacher and coach who coordinates the district’s participation in the program with other coaches and the athletic department. “We have all grown very fond of this event and the greater experience it creates for our student-athletes.”

“Please help. I’m alone and scared. I don’t know where I am or how long I have. I never meant for this to happen. All I wanted was to hang out with my friends at a party. None of this was supposed to happen... Help.” Chapter 1 “Hey guys! I got this invitation to a ghost party... get your best white bed sheet out and get your party on!” I said to my friends over the phone. Emma responded “nice” and laughed. Joseph responded, “Got my sheet out and ready!” Alison responded with a laugh. Jonathan responded with, “Sure, if there is candy corn, I’ll be there!” and laughed. Ian responded, “Where is this party? And yes, definitely coming, just
wanna know!” “Ummm...it is on Maple Street...no definite address. We will find it. Gotta be the one with a bunch of cars, lights and music,” I said. They all responded with ok. “Meet me at my house in ten,” I said. Alison said, “Scare ya later,” and we all hung up to get ready. I didn’t want to wear a bed sheet because it seemed too old-fashioned so I put on an all-white outfit, black makeup on my eyes and half red, half black lipstick and some white shoes. My friends all arrived around the same time. We all said hello, got a quick snack before we left, got into my car and left for the party. Chapter 2 It didn’t take long to find the house the party was being
hosted at. We stepped in and were greeted by our host, Jackson. Jackson didn’t seem as normal as the rest. It was a pretty normal party - singing, dancing, eating, talking. But then something happened that changed all that. Jackson came up running toward us in what seemed like fear. After he ran past us, the lights started flickering. At first, we thought it was a joke. Everyone looked around for light switches and soon found out that the lights were fake lights that were put up as decorations for the party, and didn’t even have real light bulbs to light it up. At that time, everyone started to panic. Then a voice came out of nowhere. And then he came. And then IT came.

Weathering the Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping
out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and
wind and sleet and snow and blazing temperatures – maybe I’ll be convinced. Stupid? Sure, in those rare, extreme cases when the forecast is 100% accurate. But you won’t see me rushing out to buy milk and eggs and bread on a whim. Because guess what? When the power goes out, no one’s making French toast. The way I see it, owning a shovel, keeping your gas tank above empty and stocking a few bottles of water and some nonperishables isn’t the kind of thing that should be necessitated by an emergency warning. It’s just practical common sense. If you need a meteorologist to instruct you in those types of preparations, well then, the weather isn’t your biggest concern.

VACCINATION CLINIC HELD - The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter’s Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets was recently held in Syosset. The Animal Shelter’s free rabies clinic allows residents to bring in their dog, cat or ferret to receive important inoculations. Inspection & Installation Dinner honoring Chief of Department Mark Mianulli and his fellow Officers was recently held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Chief Mark Mianulli is the latest in a series of outstanding leaders whose diligence in leading the Syosset Fire Department has kept the department well trained, contributing to the outstanding reputation of the fire service in Syosset.
CRUIZIN’ FOR A CURE - The 10th Anniversary of the Long Island Cruizin’ for a Cure Car Show was recently held at the Sears Auto Center in Hicksville. Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure is a collectibles car event whose mission is to raise money for Prostate Cancer testing and research. Since the Car Show’s inception in 2006, the Car Show has greatly raised the awareness for prostate cancer in men while providing more than 2500 free tests and identified one hundred eighteen potential cases of Prostate Cancer.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
