Tax Collection Closed Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich wishes to notify town residents that the 2016 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $530,914,139.33 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $135,840.96 (0.025%). Nassau County’s portion was $252,013,195.04 (48%). The Town of Oyster Bay’s portion was $95,959,448.57 (18%), and the special tax district’s portion was $173,129,409.11 (33%).

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone announced that registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Sunday, October 16th (8 to 10 a.m.), Monday, October 17th (7 to 9 p.m.) and Thursday, October 20th (7 to 9 p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage (in Bethpage Community Park). Ice hockey schedules will be distributed at registration. “Youngsters from the ages three to thirteen

can take advantage of the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of experienced ice hockey coaches,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “The Youth Ice Hockey Program has received acclaim by the National Hockey League, who have partnered with the Town for a ‘Hockey is For Everyone’ initiative that promotes hockey programming and youth enrichment.” Anyone interested in registering for the Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth

Please note, if you are registering a child for the Youth Clinic AND another child or children for the Tot Hockey program, the discounted price will apply to the “Tot Hockey” fee(s). Bethpage High School science research teacher Chris Pollatos has been named Long Island Science Teacher of the Year in the junior division by the Long Island Science Congress. Nominated for the award, receipt of it is based on student successes

in the area. Mr. Pollatos has been a science teacher in the Bethpage School District since 2003 and began teaching science research in September 2012. He earned both his bachelor’s degree in geology and secondary education,

Blue Ribbon School U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. announced that Syosset High School has been named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Syosset High School is one of just 279 public and 50 private schools in the nation to receive the honor this year. In order to be named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a school must first be nominated by its respective state education department before completing a comprehensive

application regarding school practices. Syosset received the Exemplary High Performing Honor, which takes into account performance on state assessments and national exams, graduation rates and school operations such as the use of assessments and assessment data, curricula, professional development, leadership and community and family involvement. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers, Syosset High School Principal Dr.

Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. Because, before we know it, we’ll be on to the next one.

Constitutional Lesson Forty-four newly elected student council members representing grades kindergarten through five at South Grove Elementary School in Syosset were recently sworn in by New York State Judge Gina Lopez-Summa, who provided a firsthand lesson on the United States system of government and the U.S. Constitution. In recognition of Constitution Day, the entire South Grove students were treated to

a special visit from the Hon. Lopez-Summa, who administered the oath to the new council members, discussed how the three branches of government function and stressed the importance of governance and leadership. The event included a recital of the Preamble to the Constitution, which begins, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union….” Student council advisers

Cathy Bozza and Christina Mancuso coordinate the assembly every year in conjunction with Constitution Day, created in 2004 to recognize the adoption of the U.S. Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on September 17th, the day in 1787 on which delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.

Two Scholars Honored Two John F. Kennedy High School students from the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, Ellie Lee and Schuyler Young were recently named Long Island Scholar Artists. The students received the Visual Arts honor, and Award of Merit in Theater, respectively. Ellie was one of 10 students in Nassau County to receive a scholar artist recognition and Schuyler received one of 20 awards of merit. The students were

honored at an award ceremony at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills, NY, and will participate in an endof-the-year reception at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in June. Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA), in collaboration with Newsday, New York Community Bank Foundation, and Long Island’s school art administrators, have hosted this award ceremony since its inception in 2007. The LIAA Scholar-

Artist Awards Program is designed to honor Long Island students considered to be “the best of the best” in both academics and arts. All Long Island high schools, private, public and parochial are invited to nominate up to five students, one in each of the judged disciplines: Music, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Theater and Dance. Ten students from Nassau County and ten students from Suffolk County are chosen as winners.

Bellmore-Merrick CSD’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School student Alicia Abramson said she had to concentrate intently and even close one eye to complete a seemingly easy task - stacking cups. The catch was that she was wearing vision impairment goggles to simulate being intoxicated. “I couldn’t imagine being mentally impaired as well as visually,” she commented after completing the task. The simulation was part of a nationwide program, Arrive Alive, which promotes awareness about distracted and drunken driving. It was hosted by the Community Parent Center of BellmoreMerrick. Completing the timed fine motor skill game of Perfection, walking a straight line,

operating pedal cars and a driving video game enables students to fully experience the potential consequences of making destructive decisions. “I don’t even know what is going on right now,” said senior Mike Losak as he steered his video game car into a wall while attempting to avoid a pedestrian. Losak was wearing “beer goggles” to impair his vision. Sophomore Nicole MacLaren said she “lost her balance a lot quicker” than she thought she would while wearing the beer goggles to simply walk a straight chalk line. Max Vandewater, a safety ambassador from the Arrive Alive program, reminded students that even though they may consider themselves skilled
