Odds & Ends So begins year two of the great “unretirement” from dance, as I dusted off the old tap shoes yet again and made my way back to the studio of my childhood once more. There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life. It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with. Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of

It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

Over 50 Fair a Success “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+” is the slogan of the Over 50 Fair, and this year the event was overflowing with attendees. Over 700 Baby Boomers, seniors and those a bit younger enjoyed popular exhibitors from past years and many new additions. The Fair is recognized as Long Island’s largest “Over 50” expo. This year’s event included several reality TV favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series, “The Bachelor,” in 2015. She discussed what it was like to be on the TV show and also taught a yoga class.

Chef Maria Petridis of Maria’s Mediterranean Seafood & Grill in Bayside, did a Greek cooking demo that was entertaining and informative. Chef Maria was crowned a “Chopped Champion” on Food Network’s Chopped in December. Chef Sophie Bravo of Food Network’s Chopped Junior taught a rainbow meringue class as well as a cake decorating with fondant class. Sophie is a delightful 11 year-old. In addition, Bobby Goldman, author of the current off-Broadway show Curvy Widow spoke to an interested crowd. Others classes included reiki, astrology, hot flashes, trusts, reinventing

yourself, knitting, a country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. The Singles Lounge, facilitated by 7 in Heaven Singles Events, was a big hit with women as well as men. Noteworthy Music played live jazz and acoustic music throughout the day. This new addition to the Over 50 Fair was well received. Repeat attendee Tony Miller of Sayville reported “The Over 50 Fair has become an annual tradition for my wife and me; it’s an event we honestly look forward to. This year’s fair

was no exception, and truly the best one yet.” The vendors connected with attendees, including those who attend year after year. Repeat exhibitor Joe Satriano of the Susan Satriano Foundation wrote “The Over 50 Fair is a grand expo of talented people and amazing products on display for sale. There is something for everyone to browse, enjoy talented performers and attend educational classes during the day.” New exhibitor Sarah Gualtieri of MD Logic gushed “Thank you for putting on such a wonderful event. This was the first show that we participated in for our brand, and we’re very happy that we chose the

A Bittersweet Reunion

Eight Syosset High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Nishant Bhaumik, Melinda Blumenstock, Mathew Chvasta, Bradley Greenberg, Nikhil Jhaveri, Grace Kim, Simar Kohli and Wanlin Li. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awarded this distinction to approximately 16,000 high school students nationwide. The semifinalists have qualified to compete

for approximately 7,500 available National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. Finalists will be announced in February 2018, with the winners to be named in the spring. Semifinalists qualified by scoring among the highest in the state on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year, including the top 1 percent nationally. “We are very proud of these students and their incredible academic

achievements and wish them continued success in their futures, said Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante. Additionally, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 44 Syosset High School seniors Commended Students in the program. These students are among 34,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT based on a national selection index and will receive Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

that go with them - that’s the beauty of photography.” Native Long Islander Sean Fitzthum was attending AiNYC for graphic design, when he took a photography class and was “immediately hooked.” In addition to his formal education, Sean credits his old roommate/ photographer Chris Kozloff and the school of hard knocks for his talent. As Sean puts it, “I learn something new every time I go shooting.” Sean enjoys “all kinds of photography” but his favorite is a tossup between concert photos and cityscapes - with the former genre garnishing his fifth win. This adept photographer learned on digital, in fact, he never shot on film which is lucky for his wallet, as he has taken almost a quarter million photos. Sean’s photo enterprise, SMF Photos, is where he captures a variety of images for clients including cityscapes, concert and travel. Other competitions that Sean has won include Newsday’s Photo of the Week and he was one of 50 finalists whose work was displayed in the lobby of the Empire State Building. Sean was also featured on News12, NBC 4 News, Fox 5 News and NY1. Since September 2002, the Wantagh website has sponsored this free photography competition providing all with an

The 3rd annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The parents and children of John Brower, Jr. formed the foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction.

They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction. We will continue with these walks and our other foundation activities until we see a marked improvement

Open House Set The Manes Family Art & Education Center, Nassau County Museum of Art’s newly-renovated space on the Museum grounds, is now home for one of the region’s most ambitious line-ups of art classes for adults, teens and children. The public is invited to an Open House on Saturday, October 21st, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. to see the beautiful classroom and art viewing spaces at The Manes Center. This dedicated art education Center offers adult classes at all skill levels in figure drawing, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, photography, fiber arts and collage. Grant Received Through a generous grant from the Art Bridges Foundation, visitors to Nassau County Museum of Art’s current exhibition, New York, New York, will have the option of reading the exhibition’s interpretive wall titles and supportive materials in Spanish. Exhibition materials provided to the Museum’s partner school districts will also be available in Spanish. Long Island, one of the most demographically diverse regions in the state and nation, boasts a large and growing Hispanic population, one that is currently estimated to make up 16.3 percent of all residents. In its efforts to create greater connections with Long Island’s Spanish-speaking residents, the Museum sought funding to translate educational, interpretive and promotional exhibition materials for New York, New York into Spanish. The successful grant request makes it possible for the Museum for the first time to reach newer populations in their native tongue. It is particularly fitting that New York, New York is the Museum’s first

exhibition to have bilingual supportive materials. The city’s population has always reflected successive waves of immigration. Many of the 140 works of the exhibition depict immigrant communities throughout the city, as well as the city streets and landmarks that greeted immigrants on their arrival. One of the exhibition’s signature works is John Sloan’s Bleeker Street, Saturday Night, a 1918 oil which portrays a slice of the immigrant experience in New York, inviting connections to explore that experience. Earlier this month, arts patron and philanthropist Alice Walton announced the formation of Art Bridges, a foundation focused on sharing outstanding works of American art with museums and institutions of all sizes and in all regions of the country; an example of this is the loan of Sloan’s Bleeker Street, Saturday Night from the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Said Walton: “Our country’s significant works of art should be available for all to see and enjoy. Outstanding artworks are

in museum vaults and private collections; let’s make that art available to everyone, and provide a way to experience these cultural treasures.” New York, New York remains on view at Nassau County Museum of Art’s Saltzman Fine Art Building through Sunday, November 5. The Museum, located at One Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor, off of Route 25A/Northern Boulevard, is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and above) and $4 for students and children (4 to12). Docent-led tours of the exhibition are offered at 2 p.m. each day, meet in the lobby, no reservations needed, free with Museum admission. Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can

employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active. Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters

to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.
