Nassau BOCES employees were awarded grants totaling more than $25,000 through the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting initiatives beyond the scope of the agency’s budget. These awards have helped to purchase iPads for instructional use, an exercise program for special education students and other innovative ways that help students. “We are really grateful for these funds that allow us to use iPads to help students develop visual, motor and perceptual skills. It is a terrific tool

for us to use with our students,” said grant winner Karen Stordeur, an occupational therapist at Nassau BOCES Children’s Readiness Center. “Over the years we have supported a lot of highly exciting projects,” said Catherine Pucciarelli, Foundation Chairperson. More than 125 grants totaling over $200,000 have been awarded since the inception of this program in 2007.” The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization supporting initiatives beyond the scope of the agency’s budget. The

organization raises funds through events such as its annual gala recognizing honorees of the Nassau BOCES Education Partner awards program. Now in its eighth year, the awards program honors people and organizations that share Nassau BOCES’ commitment to public education. Paws For Parkinson’s Home is where the dog is… except on Sunday, October 27th, when they are invited to help cure Parkinson’s Disease (“PD”), a neuromuscular disease that affects over 1 million Americans. The Annual Paws for Parkinson’s “HowlO-Ween Dog & People Walkathon” will take place at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. This annual event is presented by the American Parkinson Disease Association (“APDA”). The goal is to raise money for Parkinson’s research. Registration starts at 11 a.m., and the walk starts at 12:30 p.m., rain or shine. Registration fee is $25, and each registrant at the event receives a T-shirt while supplies last. The activities include a 1-mile walk, refreshments, exhibits and informational tables, including an “Ask The Trainer” table, courtesy of Woofgang Dog Training and staffed by professional dog trainer Laura Garber. Musical entertainment is being provided by “Any Way You Want It” (Journey tribute band). The Master of Ceremonies is Shari Einhorn, (News 12 L.I. Health Reporter), and

there will be special guest speakers, raffles, contests and prizes. A highlight of the event is the “Halloween Hounds Costume Contest”, where canines compete for prizes for best costume in various categories. Canine participants will also enjoy lots of giveaways from sponsors, including Pet Supplies “Plus”, Petco and Petland Discounts. Everyone is invited to walk, or just enjoy the facilities and various activities. The principal sponsors of Paws for Parkinson’s are the Adele Smithers Parkinson’s Disease Treatment Center, Teva Neuroscience, and Winthrop University Hospital, along with the local APDA Information & Referral Centers at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury and St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. These sponsors demonstrate their strong commitment to the Parkinson’s community throughout the year, by providing patient services, support groups and educational events to improve the quality of life of those affected by PD.

Exit Sandman By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Cliché? Sure. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting. Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons. In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history. Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end. The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson. Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond. It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me. Thanks for the memories, Mariano. #42 Forever.

Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District has been selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a recipient of the National 2013 Blue Ribbon School Award and has been designated an Exemplary HighPerforming School. Kramer Lane received this honor based on its 2012 English language arts and mathematics assessment scores. Exemplary HighPerforming Schools are ranked among the best-

performing schools in the state. To be considered for the award, the school’s test scores must meet or exceed the average of the state’s cut scores at the 85th percentile for all grades tested in both reading and math. “Excellence in education matters, and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in his announcement speech. “National Blue

Ribbon Schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.” Kramer Lane was one of only 236 public schools in the nation to be selected for this honor. A Memorable Occasion Meet Your Neighbor! and many others. It was truly an intense experience. That night, at Post 1738, we came together to share stories and receive awards. Delivering a speech in front of them was

even more anxiety provoking. The eight of us found ourselves recollecting a week that served as the highlight of our summer and the spark for our patriotism. For me, staring at all of my heroes was truly a test of both my resolve and my public speaking abilities! We were in the presence of the people

that make our great nation run. Without the officials who were present, our society would be nothing. After giving my speech, I returned to the seat beside my mother and trembled at the thought of the journey I had just finished. My road with Boys’ State has come to an end, but my pride in our country has just germinated. At the end of the night, I received a Congressional Certificate of Merit, a Proclamation and a multitude of other awards; but mostly, a sense of American Patriotism. I would like to conclude by thanking American Legion Post 1738, the political figures who give me the hope for a greater nation, and the men and women who have given their lives for the United States of America.

On September 24th, eight boys and girls were awarded several honors for attending and excelling at Boys’ State and Girls’ State. I am proud to say that I am one of these eight. From the moment we walked into Post 1738, we were greeted by men in ties with our national colors. The podium was even emblazoned with an American pattern. The event started with a prayer, pledge and the reservation of a chair in the corner for those who remain missing after all of America’s combat. We found ourselves in a room full of legionnaires, overachievers and politicians, such as Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Congressman Peter King, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga

ADRC’s Executive Director and CEO, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, announced today that twenty-seven sites across Nassau and Suffolk will participate in the Center’s 2013-2014 Art Expression Program developed for individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. ADRC has been coordinating this very special program since 2003.

The program includes training for professional coordinators, with ongoing support throughout the program year. The program culminates with ADRC’s Annual Tea and Art Exhibit where the paintings created by the Alzheimer’s artists are on display. Family friends and relatives are invited to the Annual event, and the event is open to the public.

“It is always amazing to see the completed artwork because in many cases our Alzheimer’s artists are unable to verbalize but are able to put their thoughts, feelings and emotions into their artwork,” states Ms. Malack-Ragona. Ms. Malack-Ragona further states, “The purpose of the Art Expression Program is to stimulate the mind through creation, and

strengthen self-esteem and relationships.” Individuals participating in the program work in small groups and in a nonjudgmental environment where process is more important than the finished product. The Power Of One

John Larochester, teacher at Bethpage High School, has been named a Gold Star Teacher for the 2012-2013 school year by W!SE. He was chosen for the honor based upon his students achieving a 90% passing rate on the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test last year. He will be honored with the award at the annual MoneyPOWER Conference for Financial Literacy in New York City in November. Mr. Larochester is one of approximately 300 teachers across the country who met the criteria for this award.

Mr. Robert said. “Learn to be an upstander, a person who takes an active role to stop bullying.” The “Power of One” set consisted of a series of colored boxes representing the different roles in the bullying process. Following the color scheme of the boxes, the actors donned a green mask to represent the bully, a purple mask to represent the target and a yellow mask to represent the bystander. The skits displayed vivid examples of physical, verbal and cyber

bullying. The highlight of the performance was when a student volunteer, dressed as a superhero, looked into the white box, which contained a mirror, and realized that she has the ability to report and deal with bullying. The activity concluded with the audience taking the “Power of One” antibullying oath. During the week, the students also had the opportunity to sign their names on an antibullying pledge poster.

Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured

mentally, physically and financially is incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. LEADERSHIP TRAINING - Members of BNTY, the youth group of Temple B’nai Torah in Wantagh, spent a day at the Leadership Training Institute at the Hebrew Union College in Manhattan honing their leadership skills. All day seminars were conducted, including Teens Working With Adults, How To Make An Idea Into A Reality, and Improving Your Youth Group Experience.

Special Needs Yoga In our hurried, demanding lives, we could all benefit from the slow, calm breathing and stretching poses of yoga. Even children could use a time-out that is noncompetitive and gets them to focus on themselves. Furthermore, by turning their focus inward children are able to better control their impulses and attention. Manhasset SEPTA answers the call with a free, unique yoga program designed especially for children ages 5 to10 years old with learning, physical, or developmental challenges. Taught by special needs yoga instructor Maria Perez from Kids Yoga with Maria, two five-week sessions of the special needs yoga classes will be held on Wednesday afternoons starting in October 23rd. Held in the Manhasset Public Library’s Garden Room on the third floor,

the program offers 45-minute classes starting at 4 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. for 8-10 year olds, and a second class at 5 p.m. for 5-7 year olds. The program runs from Wednesday, October 23rd to November 20th. Each class will emphasize breathing and relaxing techniques with stretching and fun posing, all set to soothing music to help kids understand and experience inner focus and body awareness. Children who practice yoga can, in fact, increase their concentration and focus, and command greater body flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. “Yoga for children,” says Perez, “has been shown to promote body awareness and build self-esteem.” Through yoga games, guided imagery, and controlled breathing, they will learn relaxation and how to reduce stress themselves. “Empowering children in

mind, body, and spirit” is Perez’ mantra, and she brings this philosophy to her teaching. “Yoga fosters lifelong skills that children learn on the mat,” says Perez, “but will carry with them off the mat into every moment of their day.” Manhasset SEPTA, a local chapter of the National PTA focusing on the special education community, is eager to offer the benefits of yoga to the special needs children in our area. For a distraction-free and individualized experience, each class will have a limit of 5 participants. Students are encouraged to join all ten weeks of the program. The only requirements are comfortable clothes and a towel or yoga mat. Parents are asked to remain in the Library while their children are in class. Hispanic Recognition

Charles Bachmeier, a senior at Bethpage High School, has been named a 2013-2014 National Hispanic Recognition

Program Scholar by the College Board. Chosen for excellence in academic achievement, only 5,300 students from the more than 259,000 Hispanic/ Latino students in the country who took the 2012 PSAT/NMSQT/PAA exam received this recognition. In order to qualify for scholar status, Charles had to score well on the exam, as well as maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout his junior year. Although there

is no monetary award for the designation, it is an honor that postsecondary institutions hold in high regard. Charles has also been named an AP Scholar with Distinction, is a member of the National Honor Society, is captain of the varsity football team, and is president of the Philosophy and Robotics clubs at the school. The district congratulates him on this tremendous honor.
