Please Hold By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep

“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…

I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

Buried in with the ‘day to day’ junk mail and mixed with bills, laid this envelope. Oh, I remember we applied for a grant some six months ago…it was a thin envelope , one sheet – another denial? I opened it and nearly fainted. A $20,000 check, in support of Strength for Life, to advance our work. As you can well imagine this is not an ordinary event for our small nonprofit. We work hard to at what we do best – train cancer patients/ survivors to regain range of motion, strength and endurance. The ancillary parts of running a nonprofit are not our forte – like grant writing. There is an art to that. For Strength for Life to be honored by The Island

They will be introduced to many complementary therapies including Yoga, Reiki,

Meditation, Sound and Energy Healing and Feng Shui. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town of Oyster Bay has again been chosen to host the Long Island Senior Softball Association’s (LISSA) Division 5 “AllStar” Game. Welcome Back Picnic

It was a fun-filled Friday evening as the Village family recently gathered for their annual Welcome Back To School Picnic. Students, their families and staff members danced the night away as a DJ spun all the latest music. Attendees teamed up to play a few friendly rounds of tug of war, and many enjoyed being canvases for

the talented face painters that were on hand. There was even a visit from the Syosset Fire Department; children had fun climbing aboard a fire truck and taking a tour. And let’s not forget about all the delightful treats cotton candy, popcorn, a visit from the famous Kona Ice Truck, and a table filled with delicious baked treats

Research Symposium Set The community of St. John the Baptist is proud to announce that it will be hosting its First Annual Research Symposium on Monday, October 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. This symposium will feature the work and reflections of SJB students who are members of our GENESIS science research program. Students will present abstracts of their work and the symposium will move into breakout sessions in which each student will make a more detailed posterbased description of their work and take questions from participants. The evening will conclude with a summary review of research posters and an informal discussion. The event is designed to spark an interest in seventh and eighth grade students who love science and may be interested in conducting their own

research. Middle School teachers and parents of students are also welcome and encouraged to attend. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,

I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country.
