So anything ordinary citizens can do to alleviate such burdens can help save lives while also making hospital workers’ jobs easier and less stressful. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a ﬂu shot in 2020. That’s especially likely for people who live in communities where

the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family. Many doctor’s offices are now insisting patients wait in their cars until doctors are ready to see them, and masks may be required when entering the doctor’s office. Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020. Patients can follow such protocols even if their doctors are not insisting they do so. The same safety measures can be followed by people who intend to get their flu shots from neighborhood pharmacies. Flu shots are vital to individual and public health every year, but the importance of being vaccinated against influenza in 2020 is heightened as the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.

How to Take a More Active Role in Your Personal Health The role individuals play in their own health care became more prominent in 2020. As a global pandemic forced people from all walks of life to prioritize their personal health each time they left their homes, many individuals sought ways to take a more active role in their health care. Proactive health care has long been touted by medical professionals, though many people still don’t take such recommendations to heart. In fact, a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as much as 75 percent of health care spending in the United States is reactive in nature, meaning that money is going toward treating conditions and diseases rather than preventing them from occurring in the first place. Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach are numerous, including a reduced risk for various diseases.

• Schedule annual physicals. Annual physicals are one of the simplest and most effective ways for individuals to take active roles in their personal health. Many health insurance plans cover annual physical exams at no cost to policy holders, and these examinations can uncover issues even when individuals are not feeling any symptoms. Annual physicals also provide great opportunities for individuals to discuss diet and healthy lifestyle choices with their physicians in relaxed settings. • Learn about the preventive services that are right for you. Individuals should speak with their physicians about which services are recommended for individuals in their situations. Screening guidelines are often age-based, but they also take personal history and family history into account. For example, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends all adults between the ages

Councilman Tom Hand recently announced the return of the popular Town of Oyster Bay Fitness Classes, an excellent program that invites residents to maintain or improve their levels of fitness. Town of Oyster Bay Fall Fitness Classes return beginning Sunday, October 4th, and will be held in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Hicksville Athletic Center. Fall fitness classes are coed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older, and run for 10 weeks.

Town Dedicates Chair Of Honor In Observance Of National POW-MIA Recognition Day

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board were joined by local veterans in observing National POW-MIA Recognition Day to keep the promise of remembrance for the safe return of American Prisoners of War (POW) and those still Missing in Action (MIA). The Town Board dedicated an unoccupied chair, which honors those that are still Prisoners of War

or Missing in Action. Together with local veterans, they remembered the unaccounted service members from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and the War on Terror. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Even though their fates are still unknown, they are no less our hometown heroes and we commend them for their service to this great nation. This Chair of Honor symbolizes there will always be a place

in the Town of Oyster Bay awaiting the return of American Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action.” The Hussey Seating Company generously donated the Chair of Honor in memory of our POW’s and those who remain MIA. Hawks Get Back To The Nest For the first time in nearly 6 months, the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District opened up its doors to students on Tuesday, September 8th. While the first days back looked different this year, the excitement of students and teachers to return to the classroom was just as prominent as years’ past. Roughly 4,182 students returned this week for inperson instruction while 783 are opting for remote learning. “I could not be more appreciative to our faculty and staff at all levels for making this process go as smoothly as possible. It is because of their hard work and planning over the course of the summer that these students are back in the classroom.” Said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the

Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “We are incredibly excited to have our students back whether it be in-person or remotely.” Already familiar with the community, this is Dr. O’Meara’s first year as the District’s Superintendent but her third year as a member of the District’s Central Administration. The in-person reopening plan was created to maximize the number of students who return to school with strict social distancing and intense cleaning and disinfecting. As a part of this plan, students K-6 attend school each day and receive instruction in all subjects and specials. Students in grades 7-12 attend in-person on alternating days, twice a week, divided into cohorts by last name. Friday’s are

remote learning days for all students. Families also had the option to choose a full remote learning plan for those considered at high-risk and for those whose families are not comfortable sending their students back into buildings for in-person instruction. The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District will remain committed to the health and safety of all students and staff. The District is requiring daily health screenings, and is conducting random temperature checks of students and staff throughout the day. This year, the District’s theme is “Lighting the Way Forward,” as it offers a beacon of hope in the community during the course of this pandemic.

Bethpage Automotive Grad Gets Real-World Work Experience Jason Kropp of the Bethpage UFSD, who graduated from the Automotive Technology program at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, was among the first three students to participate in a new industry partnership. At the end of the 2020 school year, he worked as a paid cooperative employee at Levittown Ford through the school’s Cooperative Occupational Educational Program.

Four days a week, Jason worked with a mentor technician at Levittown Ford to apply what he learned in the classroom in a realworld work environment, while earning wages and receiving vital work experience. As a mechanicin-training, he had the opportunity to employ his skills in the adapted work environment of the COVID-19 workplace, where he practiced his

Be Wary Of Foods That Contain Added Sugars Sugar is a naturally occurring component in many healthy foods, including fruit, but people looking to eat healthy should be wary of foods that contain added sugars, which can pose a significant threat to long-term health. According to the Harvard Medical School, added sugars are not currently listed on Nutrition Facts labels. That can make

it hard to spot foods that contain substantial amounts of added sugars. However, the HMS recommends looking at the ingredients listings on food labels and keeping an eye out for words ending in “ose.” The Mayo Clinic notes that fructose, dextrose, glucose, and maltose are the chemical names for various types of sugar. These ingredients

can serve as a red ﬂag that a product contains added sugars. In addition to words ending in “ose,” shoppers can scan ingredients listings for other common types of added sugars, including cane juice, cane syrup, corn sweeteners, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate and nectars, honey, malt or maple syrup, and molasses.

Three talented teens attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) are being recognized by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) for their exceptional abilities. These gifted young artists are being honored with prestigious awards in the 2020-2021 Scholar-Artist competition and profiled in Newsday. Dance student Isabella Craven of the Half Hollow Hills CSD and Theatre student Shaakirah NazimHarris of the Amityville UFSD have both been named Scholar-Artists. Visual Arts student Emma Fletcher of the Jericho UFSD earned an Award of Merit. They are all

recognized by the LIAA as “the best of the best” on Long Island, artistically and academically. “We are extremely proud of these students and their impressive achievements,” said LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker. “Arts are essential to education. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto invites residents to take part in Fall Co-Ed Recreational Programs for badminton, beginning the first week of October 2020 at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Registration for this program is ongoing at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Imbroto stated, “To protect your health, extra precautions and safety protocols have been put in place to make sure that this exciting Badminton program can return safely and provide our residents with a great

outlet for physical fitness.” Badminton will feature two sessions available for registrants to choose from. Session 1 will be held Tuesdays from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Fridays from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and Sundays from 7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Session 2 will be held Tuesdays from 9:45 pm to 10:30 pm, Fridays 9:45 pm to 10:30pm, and Sundays, 8:00 pm to 8:45 pm. The Badminton program is 10-weeks long and will be held for residents only. Each session costs $75, with the program scheduled to begin on October 4th, 2020.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was

to the determination and hard work they have displayed here at Syosset High School. We wish them continued success for their futures.” Approximately 16,000 high school students nationwide were named Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and write an essay. The semifinalists have qualified to compete for approximately 7,600 National Merit scholarships worth more than $30

million. Finalists will be announced in February 2021, with the winners to be named in the spring. hours. Aim for adequate rest each night to keep your body in top form. ·Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables supply the powerhouse antioxidants that are essential for protecting a body against free radicals. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Serve fruits and/or vegetables with every meal. ·Consume fiber and

fermented foods. Fiber can help feed the gut microbiome, which is linked to a robust immune system. The microbiome also may prevent harmful pathogens from entering the body through the digestive tract. Data also suggests that eating more fermented foods can further strengthen and populate healthy bacteria in the gut. ·Exercise regularly. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate

exercise per day, advises the American Heart Association. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says physical activity may help ﬂush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. Exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells. These antibodies and white blood cells circulate rapidly, so they may detect illnesses earlier than they would if you do not exercise.
