s part of its celebration of Constitution Day on September 17th, Dutch Lane Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District participated in Pledge Across America, a patriotic ceremony designed to teach students about the significance of the Pledge of Allegiance and the American flag. ScholarArtists Named Six exceptionally talented teens attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) have been named by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) as Scholar-Artists for the 2015-2016 school year. These standout students – among only 40 high school seniors chosen from across Long Island – will be featured in Newsday and honored at the Alliance’s annual gala. They are also eligible for several scholarships to local colleges and universities. The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when
she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children
see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.
Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler
and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

The Hicksville Chamber of Commerce selected Hicksville Public School District Superintendent Dr. Carl Bonuso as Education Provider of the Year at its 89th Annual Installation and Awards Gala at the Westbury Manor on September 15th. Dr. Bonuso was honored as an award-winning veteran administrator and educator who has been a guiding force in educational excellence and collaborative leadership. Leaders Sworn In Forty-five newly elected student council members representing grades kindergarten through five at South Grove Elementary School were recently sworn in by a New York State judge who provided a firsthand lesson on the United States system of government. In recognition of Constitution Day, the entire South Grove student body was treated to a special visit from the Hon. Gina Lopez-Summa, who administered the
oath to the new council members, discussed how the three branches of government function, and stressed the importance of governance and leadership. Student Council President Francesca Napoleone recited the Preamble to the Constitution, which begins, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union…” Principal Theresa Scrocco challenged all of her students to learn the Preamble as

During the assembly, students and faculty
members sang the National Anthem with the American flag raised to half-mast, and fifth-graders then analyzed each line of the Pledge of Allegiance with their younger counterparts. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso and U.S. Air Force First Sgt. Joseph Manno spoke about the significance of the red, white and blue, and about what the flag
represents, both personally and historically. The program culminated with Sgt. Manno’s lesson to students about how to properly fold the flag. The ceremony served not only as a way to further educate students about the importance of understanding the nation’s flag and pledge, but also as a celebration of American traditions.

Each of these students earned a total of $500 – a $250 award for the winner and a $250 award for the winner’s school district. Two students earned Awards of Merit in the ScholarArtist program: Dance student Madeline Kuhlke (Bethpage UFSD) and theatre student Michaela Vivona (East Meadow UFSD). “All of us at LIHSA are extremely proud of these students and their remarkable achievements,” said Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “We work hard to help young artists achieve their full potential, both in the classroom and in their chosen disciplines. Awards like this demonstrate how LIHSA helps students to unlock their gifts and successfully realize their talents.” Scholar-Artists must demonstrate excellence as a practicing artist, as well as superior academic achievement (a grade point average of 90 or above). Candidates were evaluated based on a portfolio of their work and a written essay about how the arts have enriched their lives. Winners were chosen by a committee of arts educators and professionals, with the final selection being made by a separate steering committee.

The Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners William J. Ellinger, Gary S. Bretton and John R. Sullivan invite Bethpage residents to tour a state-of-the-art treatment facility with members of District staff. Students are invited to learn about the process that begins when water is extracted from the ground and ends when safely delivered to local homes and businesses. “Educating residents, specifically students, about what the District does to provide clean, high quality water is one of our highest priorities,” said Commissioner Ellinger. “The community will have
the unique opportunity to learn about specific treatment processes and day-to-day facility operations essential to providing this vital resource to our neighbors.” Educational tours at the Bethpage Water District facilities offer youth groups and members of the community an exclusive opportunity to see how the latest water purification technology contributes to protecting the water supply. District experts aim to promote water conservation and knowledge that inspires community involvement. “The tours provide a rare opportunity to
gain background on an international conversation concerning one of our most precious resources,” said Commissioner Sullivan. “The District hopes to provide an experience for science education and interest among the young people of our community.” “We hope to inspire community activism through these tours,” said Commissioner Bretton. “We encourage our neighbors to learn more and get involved in the District’s conservation and educational efforts like these to protect the future of our water supply.”
Residents and their families are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s seventh annual Family Fall & Halloween Festivals, which will be held on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first date of the festival will be on Saturday, October 10th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury and the second date will be on Saturday, October 24th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa. Each year, residents come out to this annual free event to celebrate the arrival of the fall season
with fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to enjoy the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, as well as decorating the pumpkin to any fun design they choose. In addition, children are welcome to come in costumes. This event is being held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division.

Based upon recommendations from teachers and a genuine interest in the subject matter, eighth-graders Vincent Perez and Anthony Verde from John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District were chosen to attend Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, for five days this summer. Sixth-grade science teacher Vincent Perez Sr., Vincent’s father,
participated in the teachertraining portion of the program. The student camp had four components: a history of space exploration, astronaut training, technical skills and graduation. Teachers participated in STEMrelated activities that could be replicated in the classroom and learned about the unique history of NASA in Huntsville. All

Programs like Too Good for Drugs seek to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. These services are only a brief snapshot

Lyn Dobrin has served as the public relations consultant for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program since the start in 1980. When Long Island women started speaking out about breast cancer, Dobrin provided the avenue for their voices to be heard as a driving force in the breast cancer activist movement. She has helped facilitate change and improvement in the provision of breast cancer services and awareness. There is no charge for this event and light supper is provided. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is celebrating its 35th Anniversary on October 13th honoring two individuals with long-time connections to the program - State Senator Kemp Hannon and publicist Lyn Dobrin. The event is part of the program’s annual free Celebration of Survivorship at the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom at Adelphi University in Garden City. Doors open at 6 p.m. and speakers begin at 7 p.m. Senator Kemp Hannon is an ardent supporter of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, directing essential funding that allows for support services to all New Yorkers. As a long-time member and current chair of the Senate Health Committee, he has championed significant legislation in all areas of health care, in particular, women’s health issues. Known for his intellect

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Thursday, September 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s substance abuse and addiction programs for teens. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Beach Club for a delicious dinner. At a time when so many families know first-hand the pain of having an adolescent with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidence-based programs for teens. In addition to providing teen-focused intervention,

Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Sunday, October 11th (8:00 to 10:00 a.m.), Monday, October 12th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) and Thursday, October 15th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage (in Bethpage Community Park). Ice hockey schedules will be distributed at registration. Youngsters from the ages three to thirteen can take advantage of The Youth Ice Hockey Program to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of ice hockey coaches. Anyone interested in registering for the Youth Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency
(canceled check, utility bill, etc.) and a check or money order (no cash). All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. Registration fees are as follows: Tot Hockey: $200 for one child being registered (plus $150 for each additional child in the same family), and the Youth Hockey Clinic: $275 for one child being registered (plus $225 for each additional child in the same family). Please note, if you are registering a child for the Youth Clinic AND another child or children for the Tot Hockey program, the discounted price will apply to the “Tot Hockey” fee(s). Now in its 22nd year, this two-day festival featured hours of live poetry and Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jam funk rock and jazz music performances. A portion of the sales proceeds benefitted the camp. Performers included Cassandra House, Gerry McKeveney, Jerry McDonald, David Amram, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to Dayton, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, Funkin’ A, Jelly Band and the Falco Brothers. A special addition to this year’s event was the Flower Power stage, where upand-coming artists provided additional musical stylings. Linda Ringhouse, owner of The Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport, an original Bradstock organizer who rejoined the staff this year, spearheaded this portion of the festival. On Sunday, guests were also invited to take in the rhymes and slams of the area’s finest and most diverse poets, who performed on the Poetry Stage.
All ticketholders were also given the added opportunity to participate in the 5K Trail Fun Run through the wooded grounds of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. All participants were recognized at the Awards Ceremony and received a Bradstock XXII mug.
The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing on October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.
“Since its inception Bradstock has raised over $50,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck,” Bridget Costello, Camp Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, said. “The Bradstock organization has continuously updated the venue from electric equipment to paint to campground figures, including a beautiful, 800-pound wooden Phoenix statue that was repurposed from a tree that was lost in Hurricane Sandy. The statue has become an emblem for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and our campers, rising out the ashes to become a great inspiration to us all.” Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cookouts, swimming and boating.
