The Great Jack O’lantern Blaze To Return To Old Bethpage Village Event To Give A Boost To The Local Economy & Provide Residents And Visitors With Unique Experience

Schweitzer. A small team of local artists hand-carved more than 7,000 jack o’lanterns and created elaborate pumpkin sculptures at this walk-through experience on the grounds of the 19th-century village. New displays this year include an 80-foot circus train--a nod to the 146-year run of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the nearby Nassau Coliseum, a sea monster and many new creative creatures from under the ocean. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze® is also returning for its 17th year to its original location in the Hudson Valley at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson. That location will be open 59 nights through November 21 and will feature new displays such as an immersive river walkthrough experience and a New York City streetscape.

The health and safety of our visitors is our highest priority. At both locations, the experience is outdoors and touch-free, and capacity has been reduced to ensure social distancing. Visitors who are not vaccinated are required to wear masks at all times. Masks are not required for vaccinated visitors while on the grounds, but will be required when entering buildings, such as restrooms. Creative Director Michael Natiello leads a small team of local artists who carve all the jack o’lanterns. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze Shop offers a selection Blazespecific merchandise including T-shirts and hats. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is at 1303 Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage.

Restoration is a living history museum owned and operated by Nassau County that provides guests the opportunity to step back in time to the island’s agrarian past. The Village consists of homes, barns and other buildings dating back to 1765. Costumed interpreters describe life as it was in the 19th century and historic trade smiths demonstrate various trades. Also on the grounds of Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a Co-Op Farm and farmers market, which brings organic and local food to Long Islanders and the Museum of American Armor which is home to armored vehicles dedicated to remembering our servicemen and women who have fought bravely for our country. Go Gold With The Sarah Grace Foundation For Childhood Cancer September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is ensuring that everyone knows how they can support their mission and these children this year. As an all-volunteer charity, the Foundation has worked with thousands of children and their families over the last 18 years, providing numerous programs in an effort to help combat the struggles of this horrific disease. “Every year, over 4,000 children die from cancer,” said Matt Weippert, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Roughly 46 children are diagnosed every day. We are all too familiar with their pain and their struggle, and we’re committed to doing all we can to improve their lives even a little bit.” A gold ribbon is the worldwide symbol of childhood cancer awareness, and all the members of the Foundation are asking that as many people as possible “Go Gold For Our Children” this year, and wear a ribbon at some point during the month of September. For just a $10 donation, you can order your own ribbon on the Foundation website. Your donation directly

supports the programs the Foundation runs to support children and their families, such as their hospital Book Carts and toys for families during the holiday season. The Foundation is currently in the process of their Sizzling Summer Bake-LESS Cake Sale, where you can make a donation for the price of a traditional bake sale purchase. This year, in lieu of their standard backpacks filled with school supplies, the Foundation supplied families with gift cards to stores such as Target and Staples so they could purchase the back to school supplies they needed. Over the last year, they have also continued to support families with rent and grocery expenses, while partnering with the New York Mets to supply local hospitals with tickets to various Mets home games over the course of the season. As the weather gets cooler, the volunteers at the Sarah Grace Foundation are looking ahead to other programs, including their Halloween Trick or Treat goodie bags, which are sent to hospitals across the Long Island-New York area for all the children. They are currently planning their

holiday toy drive again, as well as their annual Holiday Extravaganza, where you can purchase tickets for a chance to win various prizes every day of the month of November. “The last year and the pandemic have been hard for everyone, but especially so on these families who were already struggling,” said Weippert. “Your support means the world to both us and to these families, and as we look ahead to the holidays and our plans for 2022, including the return of our annual Night of Laughter – we hope that we can continue to count on that support.” The Foundation continues to sell washable face masks on their website, in both child and adult sizes. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen, compliments of Councilwoman Laura Maier. Councilman Hand added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. This past year has been

Free Senior Citizen Activities & Programs Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens fall activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. Book Club, music, bingo, rummikub, line dancing, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through October 31st. “I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged as the weather gets crisper and cooler as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior fall activities are extremely popular, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!”

Fall Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to participate in the Fall Oyster Bay Harbor & Beach Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, October 2nd at the Town’s north shore beaches. The event, held rain or shine, is co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay. Volunteers – including individuals, groups, families and friends – should meet at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park (off Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay) beginning at 8 a.m. “This great environmental cleanup initiative features volunteers and Town employees rolling up their sleeves and working sideby-side to remove litter and debris from the beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay Harbor,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We invite residents of all ages to pitch in and help make a difference in our community! This year’s event will also feature new fun for the family, as a new scavenger hunt will be featured for kids.” Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the clean-up include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach clean-up events have resulted in about forty thousand pounds of debris collected by volunteers. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels.
