In addition to being one of only 20 students to earn a Scholar-Artist designation by the Long Island Arts Alliance, Bethpage High School senior Michelle Zheng was honored with the highest overall score for her portfolio. The prestigious award carries with it the highest possible level of media attention for students and for their

district art programs. Zheng was the top of art students on Long Island that met the criteria of an unweighted average of at least 90 and a portfolio submission containing 10 works of art. The portfolio must demonstrate both technical and conceptual skill in addition to a written essay. The portfolio submitted

by Zheng contained work created in Courtney Young’s fine arts class at the high school in addition to independent projects. The Long Island Arts Alliance held its annual Scholar-Artist Gala on Sept. 12 at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts on the campus of LIU Post.

Old Westbury Gardens will extend its existing World War I exhibit, The Great War: Portraits of Privilege, Duty and Sacrifice. The exhibit, which launched in March 2018, was designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war. In addition to the exhibit, Old Westbury Gardens will present a series of speakers to explore the War’s effect on the lives of Americans, rolling-out The Great War: Lecture Series, beginning Saturday, October 7, 2018, at 2p.m. The Great War: Lecture Series will offer interesting insights into the war effort from the perspective of Long Islanders and former estate owner, John S. Phipps and his family. Presented by several high-profile academics, professors and historians, the lecture series is yet another way Old Westbury Gardens focuses on providing guests with a unique and immersive historical experience. “We’re thrilled to extend our WWI exhibit, which has had a terrific reaction from our visitors,” said Nancy Costopulos, Old Westbury Gardens CEO. “We are also pleased that we can expand on the

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

The Most Interesting Person in the Room Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have

struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

Though it’s a transformative renovation, replacement siding is a signiﬁcant and potentially expensive undertaking. Reclaimed timber A house sided with clapboard, or a log cabin-inspired look, is iconic. These types of siding are typically made from insect-repellant pine, cedar, cypress, or redwood. This wood has history and causes very little environmental impact. Fall lawn care tips Spring and summer may be the seasons most often associated with landscaping and lawn care, but tending to lawns and gardens is a year-round job. If lawn and garden responsibilities dip considerably in winter, then fall is the last signiﬁcant chance before the new year that homeowners will have to address the landscaping around their homes. Fall lawn care differs from spring and summer lawn care, even if the warm temperatures of summer linger into autumn. Homeowners who want their lawns to thrive year-round can take advantage of the welcoming weather of fall to address any existing or potential issues. • Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead.

• Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn

of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees. • Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn ﬁlled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well. • Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to ﬁrst have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing. Fall lawn care provides a great reason to spend some time in the yard before the arrival of winter.

Potential indicators of roof trouble With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they ﬁnd room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road. • Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie ﬂat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in

need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to

exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle

roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

NYS Senate Majority Delegation called on MTA to Protect LIRR riders from a fare increase. On Monday, September 17th, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) was joined by the Senate Majority’s Long Island Delegation at a press conference at the Bethpage Train Station to call for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority

(MTA) to put any proposed 2019 fare hike on hold until it makes measurable improvements in its service, equipment failures and delays. The press conference introduced legislation sponsored by Senator Elaine Phillips (7th Senate District), and Assemblyman Dean Murray (3rd Assembly District), to protect commuters

from facing even more disruptions due to the LIRR’s loss of any revenue. The delegation, led by Senator Phillips, also established a petition drive that enables constituents to voice their disgust that the LIRR would increase fares while they continue to suffer from delays and canceled trains.

What You Need To Do • Check all outdoor household goods— lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg masses. • Use a putty knife, stiff

brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a plastic bag, seal it, and set it in the sun. To get the certificate, you can perform a selfinspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.

Workforce Businesses that support career programs, assist in curriculum development, and provide insight into what employers need from those entering the workforce help schools produce a better-educated workforce. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Teacher Nick DeBlanco at the Academy at Milliken Technical Center (MTC) understands the benefits of associations with local businesses. “The partnerships are reciprocal,” said DeBlanco. “Local businesses may provide my students with training, cutting-edge technology, and sometimes donate new or used equipment so students can engage in hands-on learning. The business capitalizes on the donation because they know we will make good use of

the equipment and they will receive better-trained employees to hire.” S.W. Anderson Sales, a local business since 1955 with locations across Long Island, recently sent an 18-wheel truck filled with new and used high efficiency air conditioning (AC) units to the MTC campus in Oakdale. S.W. Anderson is a new business and industry partner with the Academy and Mr. DeBlanco’s program. Mr. DeBlanco met Mike Anderson, president of S.W. Anderson, his sons, Jason and Mike, and Jacqueline Costello, director of marketing in the parking lot of MTC. Students from HVAC, newly certified in using a forklift, assisted in unloading the equipment from the truck. “The HVAC Academy students will have the opportunity to have real-

world experiences working on equipment that is industry standard,” said Mr. Anderson. “I feel we are helping the future of the HVAC industry because technology has become advanced. Yes, the technicians still use wrenches and screws but there are new skills to be learned related to wiring, sensors, engineering, and computer technology.” The partnership goal between the Academy HVAC Program and S.W. Anderson is to prepare students for the workforce and empower them to succeed in the global community. Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 15 percent from 2018 to 2026.

HONORING TOWN COMPTROLLER - Hempstead Town Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, (2nd left), Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney (second right), Councilman Anthony D’Esposito (left) and Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr. (right) join together in congratulating Hempstead Town Comptroller Kevin Conroy (center), of Merrick, for his exemplary management of the Town’s budget and finances as well as monitoring internal controls.
