The 2014 Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place on Monday, October 6th at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The event benefits the Fund for the Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for the Uninsured was established to provide access to state-of-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. Jean Larsen of Stony Brook, a breast cancer survivor who faced a huge personal debt from battling the disease, came up with the idea of the Pink Rock Classic to help others in a similar situation. She and her friend and former coworker Walter Hurney put together the Pink Rock Classic golf tournament. Now in its seventh year, the event has raised more

than $420,000 for people in need. The 18-hole outing begins at 11 a.m. with registration and lunch. The shot-gun start begins at 1 pm. The day includes a cocktail hour followed by a grand buffet dinner and awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. The fee for the day is $350 per player or $1,400 per foursome. Last month, teachers, administrators and local industry leaders for the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) gathered to prepare for the program’s inaugural year. To open the Long Island P-TECH Teacher Orientation, assembled educators heard from Grants Administrator Christine Lopes from Uniondale UFSD and Dr. Francine Federman, Assistant Dean of CollegeHigh School Programs at Farmingdale State College, SUNY. The two spoke about the nature of P-TECH and discussed some specifics of its implementation throughout New York State. Next came Dennis Goldensohn of Arkwin Industries, a key partner to Long Island P-TECH. Mr. Goldensohn offered an in-depth look at the career fields of manufacturing and engineering on Long Island. Following this was a look at the P-TECH website through a demonstration delivered by Karen Murtha, a Systems And Communication Specialist from Nassau BOCES.

The highlight of the presentations was an exhibition of some of the first products from Long Island P-TECH. The assembled educators had the opportunity to examine the 3D printer creations produced by students during the P-TECH Summer

Academy and got a firsthand look at how a 3D printer works. The day was rounded out with group discussions, a Q&A, and a brief address by Gene Silverman, Executive Director of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs at Nassau BOCES.

Say What? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, will be hosting its “DDI Walk, Run and Ride for Autism,” on Sunday, October 12th, at the Holtsville Ecology Center. The walk, run and motorcycle/classic car rally will help to promote community support for individuals with Autism and other developmental

So Far, So Good College is unlike anything I’ve ever gone through. High school was four years of academic grinding, while college has proven to be pretty awesome. The workload isn’t too bad so far, which has allowed me to get involved on campus. I’m on the rugby team, I’ve joined a few clubs, and I’m writing for the school newspaper. College has not been all work and no play. The unfortunate moniker “Villanofun” has proven false, and I’m having the time of my life. I miss home, however. The new friends I’ve made here

are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.

The kids on my floor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

SHARING SCRAPBOOKS - In order to keep students reading and writing over the summer, Theresa Torti’s asked her kindergarteners Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District to maintain a scrapbook of all of their adventures during the summer. Those who return as first-graders with a completed scrapbook are invited to attend her scrapbook party, where the students share their scrapbooks, enjoy some snacks with their former teacher and receive a small goody bag for their extra effort.

BACK TO SCHOOL - On September 2nd, students at Syosset’s Village Elementary were all smiles as they stepped off their buses ready to start the new school year. While the near 90 degree temperature and high humidity may have made the first Tuesday in September seem more like a beach day than a school day, the children were still so excited to connect with their friends, meet their teachers and check out their new classrooms. Mr. Kasper and other Village staff were on hand to welcome the students back and ease any first-day jitters. It is sure to be a spectacular school year!

Hicksville Honors Heroes As part of an annual tradition, Hicksville High School honored the fallen heroes of September 11th by placing a wreath alongside its memorial in front of the school. On the 13th anniversary of the tragic day, the American flag was lowered to half-mast and Principal Raymond Williams, along with National Honor Society President Priya Mishra, carried the wreath to the memorial at 8:30 a.m. At 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. - the times when the

North and South Towers were hit, respectively - the school observed moments of silence and three bell tolls in remembrance of the attacks and all of the lives lost. Mishra addressed all of her fellow students in the morning. “I suppose many of us remember where we were, what we were doing that day,” she said. “9/11 was a tragic day, rooted in our history and in our hearts. However, on that day, we grew, both as individuals

and closer as a nation. We saw others helping others, regardless of any difference. Never forget.” “Let today be a day of reflection, where we remember that extraordinary people are often disguised as ordinary people, for on that day, many sacrificed to save the lives of their brethren,” Williams said. “Their sacrifices reflected courage, kindness and unity. Let us never forget.”

A forecast for steady rain did not deter hundreds of children, students, faculty family members and community residents from attending Hicksville’s Homecoming on September 13th at Hicksville High School. The day was full of festivities for everyone, including the High School’s traditional family fair, which was held across the backfield before the hometown Comets’ game against the Levittown Macarthur Generals. The fair featured a variety of foods, games, a bouncy house and booths for various school clubs and many other attractions. A half-hour before the big game, the Hicksville cheerleaders, the Starlets, the marching band and representatives from the Classes of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 showed their school spirit during a parade that started around the perimeter of the fair and culminated on the track adjacent to the football field. Prior to kickoff, the Comets were introduced to a enthusiastic home crowd that filled the bleachers. At halftime, the Starlets and marching band took the field and showcased their talents despite the rainfall. The energized home team played a great game but eventually fell short to the Generals,

Although the Comets did not win, their efforts, along with the masterful performances of the marching band and Starlets, and the many displays of school pride gave community members reasons to smile. “It’s not only just about the football team,” Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso said, “That’s one part of it. It’s also about all the other teams that have put so much hard work and practice into today the band, cheerleaders, teachers and the students. Bethpage High School senior Harshil Garg has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2015. His score of 233 (out of 240) is among the highest scores that the Bethpage School District has ever had. In addition to this latest recognition, Garg was also named to the top 50 in the Nassau County Interscholastic Math League and has worked at Sloan Kettering, Stony Brook and the Cold Spring Harbor cancer research centers. He also plays the

violin and is a member of the school’s Mathletes and robotics teams. Semifinalists represent the top one-third, or about 16,000, of approximately 50,000 high scorers who took the PSAT/NMSQT, which has a total of 1.5 million entrants, according to the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students are ranked with a selection index score based on their combined scores in critical reading, writing and math. Semifinalists can compete to be named a finalist and continue in the

process to receive corporate and college-sponsored scholarships, as well as the esteemed National Merit Scholarship. Those advancing to the finalist stage will be notified in February of their standing. Fall Arts & Crafts This fall, the Town of Oyster Bay is offering a Toddler’s Arts &Crafts program for residents and their children at two Town facilities, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. The programs serve as a great bonding experience between parents and children, also helping to develop a child’s sense of creativity. “The arts and crafts program is a wonderful opportunity for your child to be introduced to art while, at the same time, providing a great chance to spend quality time with your child,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Toddlers can enjoy a fun-filled class of arts and crafts that will help enhance your child’s creative mind and skills.” Registration for the Toddler Arts & Crafts program will take place beginning Monday,

September 22nd at the Town of Oyster Parks Department recreation office, Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Rd, Massapequa) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please bear in mind that space is limited. All applicants must provide a tax bill and/or utility bill to validate proof of residency along with a birth certificate.
