• Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any
that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should
keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

Town Dedicates Historical Marker For Famed 1800’S Oyster Sloop, The Christeen
Students Return To Bethpage
The Bethpage School District welcomed students back for the 20202021 school year on Sept. 8. The district has adopted a full in-person plan, with students in grades K-12 attending school five days a week. Social distancing, mask wearing, alternative instructional
rooms and the use of protective barriers will be implemented in each building. In a letter to the community, Superintendent of Schools David Schneider warmly welcomed students back to school, while stressing the importance of
collaboration and patience during this unprecedented year. “Our plans for a safe and healthy return will require everyone to work together both in our schools and in our community,” he said. “We know that Bethpage is ready for that challenge.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board joined with representatives of the Waterfront Center, Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation, Friends of the Bay, and numerous volunteers in dedicating a new historical marker in Oyster Bay Harbor for The Christeen - a fully restored 38-foot gaff rigged oyster sloop, the oldest oyster sloop in America and National Historic Landmark. The new historical marker was graciously donated by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation under their Historic Signage Grant Program, which has provided over 600 historic markers throughout New York State since 2006, spanning the time frame of 1740-1920. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Since the founding of the Town of Oyster Bay
in 1653, Oyster Bay hamlet and the surrounding harbor have played an important role in history, and an important role in the development of trade and commerce in New York State. Originally built in Glenwood Landing in 1883, The Christeen is an amazing and historical vessel that has served a number of roles over the years, from oyster sloop to cargo carrier. Its story of survival is an incredible one, and I am proud to dedicate this historical marker today to bring more attention to this incredible vessel.” Originally built in 1883 in Glenwood Landing for harvesting oysters in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor, over her 125 years the Christeen survived 16 major hurricanes, numerous nor’easters, two sinkings, and severe neglect to be fully restored by master shipwrights from
the Christeen Oyster Sloop Restoration Foundation. Upon her completion and relaunch in 1999, the Christeen was gifted to the Waterfront Center where she now serves as a floating classroom educating passengers about maritime history, marine science, coastal ecology, the oyster industry, and aquaculture.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness.
As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. DIY Projects That Can Conserve Energy Around The House Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. But the scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

Imbroto Announces Return of Recreational Badminton Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto invites residents to take part in Fall Co-Ed Recreational Programs for badminton, beginning the first week of October 2020 at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Registration for this program is ongoing at
the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Imbroto stated, “To protect your health, extra precautions and safety protocols have been put in place to make sure that this exciting Badminton program can return safely and provide our residents
with a great outlet for physical fitness.” Badminton will feature two sessions available for registrants to choose from. Session 1 will be held Tuesdays from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Fridays from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and Sundays from 7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Session 2 will be held

Curran Announces Nassau To Host Sleepy Hollow’s Iconic 16th Annual Great Jack O’lantern Blaze Halloween season will be more magical than ever in Nassau County this year, with County Executive Laura Curran announcing that the Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) will host the iconic Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze for the first time. The original location, The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze® Hudson Valley, will run for a record 53 select evenings through November 21. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze® Long Island will run for 23 nights from October 2 through November 1. Both locations feature all-ages, outdoor walk-through experiences through the wooded pathways, orchards, and gardens of these historic sites. A small team of local artists hand-carved more than 7,000 Jack O’Lanterns and elaborate pumpkin sculptures at each site. Nassau’s location will feature pumpkin sculptures that celebrate icons of Long Island culture - from the Apollo Lunar Module to the Montauk Lighthouse to the windmills of the East End. With a large number of new adoptions taking place as COVID-19 impacted our region in March, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca today invited residents who have not done so already to utilize the Town Clerk’s Office to properly license their dog.
