It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

Following a day of faculty and staff preparation, the Syosset Central School District welcomed back students for the 2016-2017 school year on September 1st. Throughout the district, students met their new teachers and classmates and were given an overview of the topics they will be learning this year, the procedures each class follows, and some new and exciting activities they can

look forward to. At Berry Hill Elementary School, students arriving on the first day were greeted with signs held by their teachers, as the school song was played on a piano placed just outside at the front entrance. Among the new beginnings at the school was newly appointed Principal Mary Kolkhorst. At South Grove Elementary School teachers, students and parents alike welcomed

Mi Jung An as their new principal. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers was delighted with opening day. “The feeling of positive energy on our opening day visits was infectious; radiating from smiles on the faces of children and grown-ups alike,” he said. “We wish everyone a healthy, productive and successful school year!” SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE - The Dolan Family Health Center held its 12th annual school supply drive on August 25th, providing backpacks and school supplies to 180 children who are patients at the health center. Funds for the drive are raised by employees at the health center and donations were provided by Astoria Bank, BAE Systems, the Meadowbrook Women’s Initiative, Park Shore Country Day Camp and individual donors.

The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Fire Prevention Open House on Sunday October 9th, at its headquarters, 1000 Broadway, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 42nd annual Children’s Rag-AMuffin Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 30th. The Children’s RagA-Muffin Costume Parade will start at 12 noon at the corner of North Nassau Avenue, process north on Broadway and conclude behind Fire Department Headquarters. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered so they will be eligible for free prizes. “The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Fred Ferrara. “For more than four decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young

people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to many more years of the Rag-A-Muffin parade.” The event is always held the day before Halloween, which provides some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Ferrara said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trick-ortreating. After the costume parade they’re sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the award ceremony.” Registration will be held on Sunday, October 9th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during Fire Prevention Open House at Fire Department headquarters and Sunday, September 25th at the Fire Department Booth at the Annual

In the late-night hours of the Independence Day holiday last year, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to an initial report of smoke coming from an apartment on Old Mill Road in Baldwin, where police officers on the fire scene reported that people were trapped in a second-floor apartment. Ex-Captain Kopf performed a search and rescue and located a victim in a rear bedroom, past the fire room (the living room), then carried from the building a 56 year-old man suffering from severe smoke inhalation. Baldwin Fire Department’s then-Chief, Karen Bendel, who was the first to arrive on the scene of the “uncontrolled fire” and transmitted the “Signal 10” (working fire) nominated Kopf for FASNY’s Firefighter of the Year Award. Bendel noted, “…Ex-Captain Frederick Kopf arrived in his personal vehicle…and

conducted a search. Kopf located a 56-year-old male in the fire apartment and successfully removed him with assistance to awaiting EMS personnel outside… For his actions at this scene, we are pleased to nominate Frederick Kopf for the FASNY Firefighter of the Year Award.” For his actions on this fire call, Kopf will also receive the Baldwin Fire Department’s Distinguished Service Award at the department’s headquarters later this year. Captain Frederick Dirmeir, Ladder Company 2 recommended Kopf with this summary, “Firefighter Fred Kopf negotiated the fire apartment in zero visibility, blistering heat and without the benefit of a partner to carry out this successful rescue. Due to the imminent life threat to the victim he knowingly passed the fire room without the protection of a hand line, in a rapidly deteriorating environment. During the course of this rescue Fred Kopf exhibited remarkable courage, determination and skill to ensure the successful solution which directly resulted in the saving of a human life. Fred Kopf acted in the highest traditions of the Fire Service and without regard to his own personal safety. For his actions

above and beyond the call of duty we submit that he be recognized and awarded the highest honor.” Ex-Captain Fred Kopf, a life-long Baldwin resident is a 29 year-veteran of the Baldwin Fire Department, with all 29 years assigned to Hook and Ladder Company 2. He is also an 18-year career firefighter with the FDNY, holding the rank of Lieutenant for the past 11 years with a Queens engine company. Kopf’s son, along with about a dozen volunteer firefighters from Baldwin Fire Department’s Ladder 2 Company were on hand to congratulate Fred at the FASNY Firefighter of the Year Award presentation ceremony in Albany at The Desmond Hotel in August. Several members of the Baldwin Fire Department served as an Honor Color Guard. “It gives me great pleasure to present FASNY’s 2016 Firefighter of the Year to Frederick Kopf for demonstrating outstanding heroism and risking his own life to save another. It is gratifying to recognize and celebrate that sacrifice in the presence of our FASNY family and friends,” said FASNY President Robert McConville upon presentation of the FASNY Firefighter of the Year Award to Fred Kopf.

The Troop 5 Alumni group celebrated its 100 years at Marjorie Post Park on August 27th. with a BBQ organized by Ken Gay, former Scout and Scoutmaster of Troop 5. Alumni in attendance included many former Scouts and Scout Leaders with their families. Some came from as far away as Canada and Florida. The Town of Oyster Bay’s Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA) of the Department of Community and Youth Services is offering a Workshop Enrichment Program for residents this fall. Registration for all applicants is currently underway with a deadline of September 23rd, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced. “The Fall Workshop Enrichment Program offers several excellent and educational programs that provide residents with the chance to pick up useful new talents and hobbies,” Councilman Pinto said. “Categories available for residents in the Fall Workshop Enrichment Program include courses in art, education, entertainment, fitness, music and more.” Councilman Pinto also advised residents to take careful notice of the locations of every workshop program listed on the Fall Workshop Enrichment Program brochure. There will be a wide range of courses for adults and children held at the Marjorie Post Park Community Center in Massapequa, the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community

Center in Hicksville, and the Syosset-Woodbury Community Center throughout the season. While some workshops are held separately for children and adults, the Town will once again be offering special ‘Children and Caregiver’ workshops so that they can be enjoyed together. Workshops for adults include watercolor, oil & acrylic painting, drawing fundamentals, Zumba fitness, and more. Making Their Mark As part of International Dot Day, students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District were encouraged to make their mark and reach new heights using their creativity and imagination. Dot Day, held globally on September 15th each

year, is comprised of students and teachers first reading “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, and then participating in any activity that encourages them to make their mark. At Lee Avenue, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso visited Nicole D’Antonio’s second-grade class, and

read “The Dot” aloud to students prior to a dotrelated classroom art activity. In honor of Dot Day, the school’s front windows were also decorated with the motivational words, “Make Your Mark, See Where It Takes You.”

Named as Beneficiary It was recently announced that the Gold Coast Arts Center will be one of the beneficiaries for this year’s Neiman Marcus “Love to Give” collection, available online beginning October 19th and in stores on November 3rd. The collection will feature “dozens of perfectly priced items for gift giving” from which each store will give ten percent of the proceeds to benefit youth arts education in Neiman Marcus communities across the country. In anticipation of St. John the Baptist’s 50th anniversary St. John’s has received the approval of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the support of their alumni and benefactors to proceed with a grand Library renovation to be completed in 2016. This facility will keep St. John’s on the cutting edge of advancements in education and will benefit the entire St. John’s community with its support for all academic and co-curricular programs. The new library will be a 21st century, stateof-the-art learning hub.
