For the second time in less than a month, the Syosset Central School District is being recognized by the online rating service Niche.com. This week, Niche.com identified 36 Long Island elementary schools among the “100 Best Elementary Schools in New York State,” including all seven of Syosset’s elementary schools. Niche.com’s 2018 Best Public Elementary Schools ranking is based on analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents using data from the U.S. Department of Education. Ranking factors include state test scores, studentteacher ratio, student

diversity, teacher quality, grade-school ratings and the overall quality of the school district. In August, Niche.com ranked the Syosset CSD fourth overall in New York State for 2018, moving up one spot from last year. Syosset received an overall grade of A+ based on various analyses of data from the U.S. Department of Education as well as test scores, graduation rates, college readiness, SAT/ACT scores and more. Niche. com also ranked both H.B. Thompson and South Woods middle schools in the Syosset CSD in the top 10 in New York State. Through the years, Syosset schools have been recognized in other

Generous Donation The Westbury-based credit union NEFCU has donated $20,000 to help those directly affected by the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. The announcement was made today by Edward Paternostro, president and CEO of the credit union. Working with the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) and

its online disaster relief system, CUAid (www. cuaid.coop), NEFCU made the donation to help provide critical funds for immediate and long-term recovery needs to those in eastern Texas and the surrounding area. “Witnessing the destruction of Hurricane Harvey, and the unimaginable toll it has

exacted on those in its path, we as a credit union need to do whatever part we can play in helping others face this calamitous event,” said NEFCU’s Paternostro. “We, along with other credit unions, must come forward to help our colleagues and their members who have experienced the worst of this hurricane.”

installed it at Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay. The “Little Free Library” is a wooden box on a post filled with donated books that can be read and returned. It is a great service to local residents, who can now enjoy reading in the great outdoors. “Many people enjoy relaxing and reading a book in the sunshine and the Little Library at our Town facilities will offer residents a convenient option to find a good book to read,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This first Little Library will serve as an excellent template for Scouts to replicate additional libraries.” Supervisor Saladino extends an open invitation to local scouting groups to create “Little Libraries” at Town parks, pools and beaches as part of their community service projects. Local scouts will construct the Little Library and oversee its installation along with Town crews. “They will also maintain the box and its literary contents in cooperation with their local library,” Supervisor Saladino said. “It is a project that teaches the scouts construction skills and requires the responsibility of their ongoing oversight. Life’s rewards come in many forms But for me, it’s far from the norm As a nurse, my job allows me to help Make a difference in someone’s life Whether it’s a parent, child, friend, mother or father, husband or wife Serious situations, some not fun No time to waste, but get the job done As you look into a patient’s eyes, you know they’re scared Comfort them, reassure them you’re there Just knowing this, they’re glad Time passes quickly, and does not stand still We work hard to get the patient better And no longer ill The day nears an end, the patients did well They’re on the mend A feeling of greatness is felt All in a day’s work, oh what the heck It’s just another paycheck! But not for me, it’s life’s rewards The patient recovered and is doing well They returned to follow up to report, “life is swell” So that you know Life’s rewards come in Many forms “It’s not always about the dough”

All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

Mr. Weiss’s television credits include Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Gossip Girls, and his album credits include Fantasy with the internationally renowned Audubon String Quartet and Giving Voice with famous Broadway baritone David Edwards. Mr. Weiss is an esteemed graduate of The Juilliard School.

Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto announced today that the Town will continue its partnership with Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest Food Bank, to collect food and supplies to support the urgent relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Irma, the second consecutive catastrophic storm to hit our nation in recent weeks. “Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane, forcing thousands of people to seek food and temporary shelter, as the storm, which grew to be the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, continued to deliver unprecedented amounts of rain and high winds in the impacted area,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I’m amazed and awed by the response of our Town residents over the past few weeks as we’ve worked to support the recent victims of Hurricane Harvey. Hempstead Bay Power Squadron, a Unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will present the new AMERICA’S BOATING COURSE Version 3 at Nassau County Wantagh Park starting Wednesday, September 20th, at 7:30 p.m. AMERICA’S BOATING COURSE, Third Edition, a boating safety course from the United States Power Squadrons®, incorporates the newest material and covers boat terms and types, personal watercraft, boat handling, required equipment, safety standards, federal, state & local regulations, aids to navigation, navigation rules, emergencies and

marine radiotelephone. The course is approved by New York State to fulfill the requirement for formal training to operate Boats and Personal Water Craft (PWC). Youngsters 18 years of age and younger are welcome in order to fulfill the New York State Boating Education requirements, but must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited so please register in advance to insure your spot. AMERICA’S BOATING COURSE will run for five sessions on Tuesday evenings. The course is designed to be useful for all boaters, from the person operating a

personal watercraft to the skipper of a family cruiser or sailing enthusiast. The course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. The 2017-2018 school year started off without a hitch for students in the Bethpage School District, as they returned ready to hit the books on September 5th. Administrators, teachers

and faculty were on hand to guide the students to their classes after welcoming them off the buses. The hallways at all five schools teemed with enthusiasm and excitement as students

reconnected with friends and became acquainted with their teachers. The district wishes all students and staff a very successful year.
