The students qualified for this distinction by scoring among the highest in the state on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 16,000 high school students nationwide were named Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. The semifinalists have
qualified to compete for approximately 7,600 National Merit scholarships worth more than $31 million. Finalists will be announced in February 2020, with the winners to be named in the spring. “We are very proud of the 13 Syosset students named National Merit Semifinalists and their incredible academic achievements,” said Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante. “We wish them continued success in their futures.”

Vets BBQ, POW-MIA Remembrance Ceremony Nassau County Executive Laura Curran today reminded residents of an upcoming POW-MIA Remembrance Ceremony and invited all Veterans and their families to a BBQ Picnic to be held Thursday, September 19th at Eisenhower Park. Hicksville Public Schools opened its doors to new and returning students on Wednesday, Sept. 4 for the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Students at Hicksville’s seven elementary schools participated in various activities to become acclimated to their new classrooms and get to know
one another and their new teachers. Meanwhile, secondary students at the middle and high school began the hustle and bustle of navigating their new schedule of courses and extracurricular activities that will keep them busy throughout the year. Students entering new schools for the first
time also enjoyed a smooth transition into their new surroundings. Principals helped to make it a memorable start, with messaging draped throughout the buildings to welcome students to what they anticipate will be another fun, productive and rewarding year.

The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and
