Casting Away Sins

Tashlicht means “casting off,” and the ritual included throwing bread into the water to dismiss sins. Just as the water carries away the bread, so too are sins carried away. Prep Before Painting Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank. Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin. • Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities. • Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding

a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint. • Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake. • Prepare your paint. Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl,

and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can. • Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter. Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

another can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs. • Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned. • Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.

• Remove dead limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning. • Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who

Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms. How To Prepare Your Lawn For The Colder Weather Changing seasons can be tough on a lawn. Always exposed to the elements, lawns can fare especially poorly upon the arrival of winter, a season known for its harsh and unforgiving weather. Even the most perfectly manicured lawn can suffer at the hands of winter weather, causing homeowners to sit idly by and hope spring arrives that much sooner. But as punishing as winter weather can be on a lawn, homeowners are not without recourse. Much like homeowners can take steps to help their lawns survive sizzling summer heat waves during the warmer months of the year, they also can take steps to help their lawns make it through the often stormy weather synonymous with winter.

• Don’t procrastinate. Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy. Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result. Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come. • Treat trouble spots. Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions where heat waves and drought are common. In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil’s pH

Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier. • Aerate the property. Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul. Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration. • Take steps to strengthen the roots. Aerating promotes stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property. • Remove debris from the lawn. Debris left on a lawn over the winter can prove very harmful. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can suffocate the blades of grass, leading to long-term damage and a potentially unsightly lawn come the spring. In addition, piles of debris might make good homes for organisms that can damage the lawn. As fall moves into winter, periodically remove all debris, including leaves and branches fallen from trees. • Make the lawn off-limits once the temperatures dip below freezing. A lawn should be off-limits once the ground freezes. Stepping on grass that has frozen will leave noticeable footprints, and walking on frozen grass can kill the turf. When winter arrives, people should avoid using the lawn as a shortcut into and out of your home and stick to driveways and sidewalks instead.

For the fifth year in a row, Nassau BOCES has been awarded funds to help school districts improve their records management. This year’s $150,000 grant from New York State will go towards projects for the Baldwin, Elmont, Hempstead, Long Beach, Syosset and Valley Stream school districts. Thanks to this project, many of these school districts’ records will be scanned and saved in a secure Web-based environment featuring direct online access. “This project is extremely important and timely given the damage to district documents caused

by Superstorm Sandy last year,” said Paul Duignan, senior manager in the Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. In addition to safeguarding these materials during emergency situations, the document imaging process provides school district personnel with quick access to vital information. Walk For Autism Set Councilwoman Johnson said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have surfaced since the disorder has grown more visible in the mainstream press, but reputable doctors have yet to agree on any that will reverse the diagnosis. The answer lies in additional research.” Now in its sixth year, the Town’s walk has help to spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “Ultimately, the center helps families obtain comprehensive assessments, family support and information

on the latest research,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It also focusses on building awareness to the issue of Autism.” Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the tailgate party. As school is now in full swing, it is time for many high school seniors to shift their minds into gear; college gear that is. Now is the most crucial point in any high schoolers career. Essays should be close to finalized, the Common App should be filled out, standardized testing should be in order and a list of schools should be in hand. If you are a little behind in this process, do not fret. The college process is truly daunting, but you have an “ace up your sleeve.” Your guidance counselor is a trained expert and is there to simply guide you. Take advantage of them! Getting into a great

university is the culmination of your work this far. This means that it is what you have been working for since day one. If you have someone that is well versed in something you are not, it just makes sense to sit down and talk with them. They can pass valuable insight to you that would have otherwise gone unknown. Your guidance counselor is also given the task of writing a recommendation letter for you, so the more interaction you have, the better. You undoubtably want to stand out in the mind of your counselor so he or she feels compelled to write a unique essay.

Tell your guidance counselor about your extracurricular activities, hopes and goals. Tell them anything that you think sets you apart from the crowd. Feel free to ask them whatever questions you have because it’s what they are paid to do. Choosing a college will certainly be the biggest decision you’ve made this far, so it goes without saying to proceed with both caution and ferocity. Make the most out of your final year of high school, make the most out of your application and don’t forget to make the most out of your guidance counselor.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson announced that the Town will host its Sixth Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 22nd, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Winterizing Your Lawn Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead. Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season. • Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort. Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead

spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers. Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well. Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives. • Cut your lawn short. Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives

Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal diseases like snow mold. • Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil. • Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula designed for winterizing that will feed the lawn all winter long. • Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slow-growing grass to re-edge around flower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring. • Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services. • Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth. Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them set and packed away for the spring.

Scholarship Funding Secured For each of the next three years, 50 fortunate Stony Brook students will be eligible to take advantage of the AmeriCorps Education Award, which enables them to receive a $1,175 scholarship. In return they must complete 300 hours of service work for local nonprofit organizations addressing unmet health community needs in disease prevention, health promotion and hunger initiatives. The Career Center offers the program, which is a federally funded threeyear grant with support from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Students may use the scholarship to pay for education costs at any college, university, or approved post-secondary institution or school-towork program. A voucher may also be applied to pay back qualified student loans already incurred by the students. In the process AmeriCorps members learn new skills, acquire leadership experience and

gain a sense of satisfaction from positively impacting the lives of others. “The application process this year was very competitive because of the high interest in community engagement programs among higher education institutions,” said Urszula Zalewski, Assistant Director of Experiential Programs and Project Director, Stony Brook AmeriCorps Program at the Career Center. “Stony Brook University’s AmeriCorps Program has a long history of outstanding achievements, and this past success helped us receive the additional funding for the new threeyear cycle. We have 100 percent enrollment and 97-100 percent retention rates since 2004, which is a huge accomplishment.” Since 2004 the Career Center has secured $777,054 in federal dollars to support SBU students and community partners through AmeriCorps community outreach programming at Stony Brook. The Career Center

reaches out to students through other departments, utilizing ZebraNet — the Community Service and Service-Learning website — to promote available positions and provide extensive details about the application process. Stony Brook students have served the following organizations: Response of Suffolk County, The Elsie Owens Health Center, Four Seasons Nursing Home, Montefiore Hospital NYC, Oxfam America, Suffolk County Perinatal Coalition, Sunshine Prevention Center, the City Bar Justice Center, Town of Oyster Bay/G.A.P. Program, Hope House Ministries, Brooklyn Community Housing and Services, Sunrise on Wheels, and more. Participating students address community needs in health, homelessness, hunger and poverty, performing tasks such as leading community health campaigns, conducting food collections and responding to natural disasters by providing relief for victims.

This September, residents of Rockville Centre can renew its commitment to curing childhood cancer and offers support to the brave young people who are fighting this disease. Village of Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray issued a proclamation designating the month of September as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” within the Village. “We hate to think that something like cancer can happen to children,” commented Mayor Francis

X. Murray. “It’s a cause near and dear to my heart. However, I am lucky to say my niece is a survivor. But all parents should be aware that early symptoms for cancer in children are usually nonspecific. It is important that children have regular medical checkups and that parents address any unusual symptoms that persist.” Thousands are diagnosed with pediatric cancer each year, and it remains the leading cause of death by disease for American children under 15. For

those children and their families, and in memory of every young person lost to cancer, we unite behind improved treatment, advanced research, and brighter futures for young people everywhere. The proclamation recognizes the courage and compassion of children and families affected by cancer in the Village of Rockville Centre and the nation. These teens are part of a pioneering educational program — Long Island’s first science-centered high school — and come from districts across the island, including Baldwin, Hicksville, Malverne, Oyster Bay-East Norwich, Uniondale and Westbury. While stationed in Western Afghanistan in 2012, Staff Sgt. Edwin Caba of Long Beach, NY; Sgt. Alex Rotondi of Syracuse, NY; Sgt. Travis Burton of Cincinnati, OH; Sgt. Kevin Singer of Freeport, NY; Capt. Clinton Green of Staten Island, NY; and 1st Lt. Joseph Lapenta of Staten Island, NY grew to care for a stray dog that started following their unit around. She soon began to go on missions with them and protect them from other wild dogs in the area. They named her “Sheba,” Hebrew for “promise.” From then on, the soldiers made a promise to Sheba to always keep her safe. On March 23rd, Sheba gave birth to seven puppies. Cadence, Rocky, Sarah, Jack, Buckeye, Breezy and Harris were dubbed “The Magnificent Seven.” The soldiers and their medic

cared for both Sheba and all seven puppies to ensure their survival. Once the soldiers returned home, they could not bear to think of Sheba and her pups still in Afghanistan. To that end, they reached out to Save-APet Founder/President and Guardians of Rescue Vice President, Dori Scofield, who was able to help get all the dogs safely to America via Guardians of Rescue’s “Paws of War – No Buddy Left Behind” program. Once Ms. Scofield was notified the base would be closing, she contacted Nowzad Dogs, another nonprofit organization that rescues stray and abandoned animals in Afghanistan. In mid-June, a mission was implemented that allowed Sheba and all seven of her pups to arrive safely at Nowzad’s shelter in Kabul.

Through a FundRazr. com campaign set up by Ms. Scofield, SaveA-Pet and Guardians of Rescue were able to raise more than $15,000 for the dogs’ transport to the United States. Slightly short of their goal, the campaign is still running, yet the organizations pooled additional funds and donations to get the dogs to the United States on September 4th for a heartfelt reunion between five soldiers and eight dogs — all of whom have gone home with soldiers. Sheba is currently being assessed to see if she would make a good companion service dog for a veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
