These include red kangaroos, kinkajous, cougars, Barbados sheep, peacocks, the giraffe and the only lemurs born and bred on Long Island. The Long Island Game Farm also has various breeds of monkeys, buffalo, colorful parrots, zebras, aoudads, camels, ostrich, alligators and much more. Visitors can also explore nature trails that lead to places such as “Bambiland,” “The Nursery” and “Old McDonald’s Farmyard.” They can also pet, cuddle and — unlike most zoos — feed the baby animals such as pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits and ponies. For the children, there are carnival-style rides such as the Spinning Teacups, the Rio Grande Mini Train and the Antique Carousel. Pony rides are

also available on weekends during the off-season. In addition, children can watch shows and animal activities that are offered every day. In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was

payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care

what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

Each year, as fall approaches, I catch myself reflecting upon the past year. 2014 was a huge one for me, as it marked the beginning of the next chapter in my academic career. This year, I started at Villanova University. From what I can tell, Villanova is the right place for me. I’ve already gotten pretty involved, and I feel very welcome here. From the renowned orientation process, I was able to garner an understanding of the qualities that Villanova was founded upon - Caritas, Veritas, Unitas. These Latin words translate to mean Charity, Truth and Unity.

For nearly two centuries, Villanova has been producing bright minds using those three values. I’m proud to say that I have the opportunity to experience everything this university has to offer. As important as the transition to school was for me, this year wasn’t all about college. Over the summer, I strengthened bonds with friends and family. I’ve never felt tighter with my coworkers, because they finally stopped viewing me as a kid. My years on Fire Island have afforded me many things, including new employment opportunities and a unique outlook on life.

A few months ago, I graduated high school. This was a big marker in my life. My grandfather passed away in August. He was very important to me, and I think about him all the time. I went to the National Championships for Rowing this year. As the culmination of four years of hard work, it was something I will be forever proud of. On a less personal note, my community grew. We welcomed new neighbors, businesses and opportunities. In just a few short months, my life has changed dramatically. I guess you can say it has been a big year.

The Town’s popular Fall fitness programs are returning this autumn for residents seeking to stay maintain or improve their levels of fitness heading into the cooler months, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone. The Fall fitness classes will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center “These fitness programs are for individuals 18 years of age or older who want to increase flexibility, tone muscles and build strength,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Participants will be introduced to Zumba, yoga, and cardio kickboxing. The session will be carefully tailored to the physical condition of the individual and systematically scheduled to gain the best results.” Registration for the Fall Fitness programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center (167 Broadway, Hicksville) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23rd and Thursday September 25th, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday September 27th. After these dates, registration will continue at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, based on availability. Each twelve week program is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Zumba classes will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays (starting October 6th), and 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays (starting October 1st). Bradstock A Success On August 30th-31st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck hosted Bradstock XXI, a two-day music festival featuring live music from the best musical acts performing Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz. A singer/songwriter stage entertained the attendees with 30 acoustic acts and, on Sunday, 14 poets read from their works on the Poetry Porch. Approximately 750 people attended the event. It was the fourth consecutive year that the camp hosted Bradstock. Part of the ticket sales will go to benefit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Over the past four years, Bradstock has raised over $30,000 for the camp.

Among the bands who performed included Cassandra House, Gerry McKevney, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to Dayton, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, David Amram, Funkin’A, Jelly Band, Falco Brothers and The Electrix. All of the musicians and poets donated their time, energy and talent to the festival in support of the various not-forprofits that benefit from Bradstock. Long Island Heart Walk Set More than four thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 21st to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia is pleased to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay, Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division, is seeking submissions for its 41st Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. This program allows local artists to display their work at new venues in libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. “Novice and experienced artists are encouraged to enter a Preview on

Sunday, November 2nd,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “The work is judged for acceptability into this program by professional artists and teachers. Awards will be presented at a later date in the fields of photography, brush work and other media.” The Town invites local businesses to join in supporting these local artists. “Each business selects the artists for their facility at the Artists Showcase on November 13th,” Councilwoman Alesia explained. “Local businesses have the unique opportunity to support

local artists, in addition to offering their patrons the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t.” This program is FREE to both artists and businesses. The application deadline for artists is October 10th, and for venues interested in displaying artwork, the application deadline is October 30th. Staff Gathering Teachers, administrators and board of education members in the Hicksville Union Free School District convened for Superintendent ‘s Conference Day prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Students who graduated from Hicksville Union Free School District’s six elementary schools in June were welcomed with open arms by Hicksville Middle School at its orientation. The students came to school with their parents and received their schedules, agendas and words of encouragement from Principal Mara Jorisch. Students were divided into three teams and the district’s code of conduct

and expectations for the new school year were discussed as they eagerly awaited their schedules. They also took a tour of their new school along with their parents to locate their classrooms and become familiar with their new school. Ms. Jorisch told them it’s the job of every teacher in the building to make children feel safe and comfortable, and encouraged students to ask for help whenever they

need it. She also advised that students should take advantage of all the middle school has to offer, get involved and try their best in order to reach their potential. “Even if you don’t come up to us, we will come up to you and ask you if you need help,” Ms. Jorisch said. “We will make you feel as though the middle school is as small as your elementary school.”

Less than one-third of sudden cardiac arrest victims do not receive pre-hospital CPR, a vital step that can save a life. That startling American Heart Association statistic is one reason Stony Brook

Medicine held a handsonly CPR training day at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium on September 7th. Nearly 1,000 individuals, from children to seniors, attended to learn CPR.

Assembled long rows around the entire football field were 258 mannequins, devices participants used to learn hands-only CPR. This technique involves pushing hard and fast in

rhythmic motion in the center of a victim’s chest. A large video screen on the field provided instruction for those learning the technique. “The chance of someone’s survival is tripled when hands-only CPR is administered quickly and effectively,” said Edward Stapleton, Associate Professor and Director of Pre-hospital Education, Department of Emergency Medicine in the School of Medicine, and Director of the hands-only CPR event. “Our event has given so many in our community the opportunity to learn this life-saving skill.” Organized by Stony Brook Medicine, the hands-only CPR training day received support from the Suffolk County Fire,

Rescue, and Emergency Services; the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corp. The Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation, and Cardiac Science which provided the mannequins. “The more people who know how to perform CPR, the safer our communities will become,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “My family and I participated in a training session as it was extremely important for us to practice this lifesaving skill. I encourage all Suffolk County residents, including children, to learn CPR as it could make the difference between life or death. I also advise our residents to download the county’s Pulse Point

mobile application on their smartphones to help improve emergency response times for residents who may experience sudden cardiac arrest.” James Gaughran, Chair of the Suffolk County Water Authority, also participated in the CPR training. He hopes to work with the county and other organizations to develop a similar program for Water Authority employees. Tahira Farooque, of Bayport, a home health aide, came to the Stony Brook event to be more prepared for her job in case there is a cardiac arrest. That’s why CAPS is inviting the community to support CAPS at its 2nd Annual Stand Up, Don’t Stand By 5K Walk/Run to End Bullying on October 5th, as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. Check-in starts at 8 a.m. at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park; the race and walk will follow at 9 a.m. A Kiddie Fun Run for children under 8 is scheduled for 8:45. The entry fee is $25 per person, $40 for family (up to 4 participants). Arrive before 8 AM for free parking. Participants who are pre-registered by September 26th will receive a complimentary

T-shirt. Pre-registered families will receive two t-shirts. Walkers, runners, families, schools and corporate teams are invited to participate. All ages and skill levels are welcome. State Grant Procured Nassau BOCES has procured a $300,000 grant to help eight local school districts reevaluate their current assessments. The “Teaching is the Core” grant funds a yearlong initiative for 2014-2015 that includes scientific analysis, strategic planning and professional development. As part of the grant, Nassau BOCES will use a longitudinal study aimed at reducing or eliminating unnecessary preassessments. The agency will work closely with each district, conducting a comprehensive review of assessment and strategies, with the goal of determining which local assessments best serve the district’s instructional goals, supporting the use of high-quality assessments and eliminating assessments where possible. An essential tool to achieving this goal is professional development. To that end, Nassau BOCES will hold seven

professional development days throughout the school year, for a minimum of 32 educators per session (including both teachers and administrators). Educators will evaluate the various types of assessment in use, determine their effectiveness and value, and refine the assessments to better measure student performance. Assessments will be reviewed to ensure they meet the rigorous requirements of the Common Core Learning Standards, as well as fundamental educational benchmarks, such as Bloom’s Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge.

“The grant is aimed at reducing and eliminating non-essential testing,” said Dr. Valerie D’Aguanno, Assistant Director for the Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. “The goal is to analyze testing to identify what works and eliminate what doesn’t. Professional development is a big part of it. Educators are constantly assessing their students using a variety of methods. We want to engage in a dialogue about the various ways to help students achieve and positively progress forward.”

He was playing softball and collapsed on a field. A nurse and a former EMT rushed to his side and performed CPR. Their action proved vital before EMTs arrived and shocked Tannenbaum three times before he was revived. He had two vessel blockages of 95 and 99 percent that required stents. “CPR saved my life, and still in our country surviving a cardiac arrest can be a matter of luck,” said Tannenbaum.“We want to change that and increase survival rates exponentially. This training at Stony Brook is a big step to doing that for our communities right here on Long Island.”
