Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Group ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors will be holding a free virtual meeting on the Zoom platform on Sunday, October 11 from 1:00 pm 3:00 pm. Justin Yowzawitz, MD, a Northwell Health affiliated Endocrine surgeon will be the guest speaker. Dr. Yowzawitz will be discussing hyperparathyroidism. We will continue to meet online until the shelter-in-place order has been lifted. ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors, is affiliated with ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc.; a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization of thyroid cancer survivors, family members, and health care professionals. We are dedicated to support, education, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends. We also sponsor Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, yearround awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.

With a large number of new adoptions taking place as COVID-19 impacted our region in March, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca today invited residents who have not done so already to utilize the Town Clerk’s Office to properly license their dog. In the Town of Oyster Bay, once a dog reaches four months of age, the owner is required by Town Code to obtain a dog license and verification tag. Licenses are valid for one year. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “With the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic over the last 6 months, there have been reports of large increases in the adoption rates of pets for companionship, especially dogs. If you have recently adopted a dog, now is the time to license it to ensure its safety and identification in case it gets lost! Each year, hundreds of beloved family dogs are lost because these animals do not have identification tags and cannot be identified and returned to

The Oyster Bay Town Board will host a public hearing on Thursday, September 17th at 7pm at Town Hall in Oyster Bay. To ensure social distancing and accommodate all residents, the Hicksville Athletic Center, Hicksville Community Center and Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage will also offer citizens an ability to view the presentation through video conferencing which will allow for questions to be asked in real time. Space is limited at all facilities and Hicksville residents will be given priority. At the meeting, the developer will present an overview of the 26.4-
acre project and the Town Board will listen to comments from the public. To ensure all residents have an opportunity to comment, three minutes will be afforded to each speaker. Seritage, a real estate investment trust spun off by Sears Holdings, has proposed demolition of the former Sears department store and Auto Center at 195 North Broadway. Under their proposal, the site would become home to 425 rental apartments, retail and office space, restaurants, a grocery store, cinema, fitness center and food-service kiosks. The existing TD Bank and Chipotle
restaurant would remain on the site. The proposed development includes approximately 5 acres of green space. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) of the site is available online at http://oysterbaytown. com/seritage. Hard copies of the DEIS are available at Town of Oyster Bay Town Clerk’s Office, Hicksville Public Library, and Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.
WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. County Executive Curran Launches Save Lives While Staying In Nassau Smart Sprinkler The American Heart Association’s Long Island Reimbursement Program Heart Walk a Digital Experience In an effort to promote long-term water conservation, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Legislator Siela A. Bynoe kicked off the “Smart Sprinkler” Reimbursement Program. Through the new County initiative, eligible Nassau County homeowners can apply for a partial reimbursement for the cost of installing weatherbased irrigation controller technology - commonly referred to as smart sprinkler systems - at their home. “This summer, as we go through an abnormally dry season, we are reminded of how important it is to conserve our precious water,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “Each summer, water usage goes up 400%. We can make a difference by changing our habits, and embracing technology to do the job for us. I hope this reimbursement encourages people to upgrade to a smarter lawn watering system, which will save water — and help
residents save money on their water bills.” “By incentivizing the use of proven water-saving technology, the Smart Sprinkler Reimbursement Program puts money back into the pockets of residents while supporting Nassau County’s ongoing efforts to conserve and protect our most precious natural resource,” said Nassau County Legislator Siela A. Bynoe. “I urge every eligible homeowner to take full advantage of this initiative - one that bolsters regional efforts to preserve our single-source aquifer as a reliable supply of clean, safe, and plentiful drinking water for future generations.” Qualified homeowners can receive up to a $150 credit toward the cost of installing a smart sprinkler system. The reimbursement program does not apply to residents who are already eligible through their water supplier for financial assistance in purchasing smart sprinkler technology. Rebates are drawn from a
$100,000 allocation and will be provided on a firstcome, first-served basis. Residents can apply for the reimbursement by visiting www. nassaucountyny.gov/1547/ consumer-affairs Weather-based irrigation controllers are equipped with smart water sensors that detect rainfall and prevent over-watering. Smart sprinkler systems supplement this data with a variety of metrics and data provided by the user to determine how fast water will evaporate from soil in a yard. Based on this information, smart sprinkler systems can break up watering times into smaller segments automatically to maximize efficiency, help water soak in, and reduce runoff. Smart sprinklers also monitor temperature, keep track of previous weather and adjust irrigation levels to meet the needs of each zone. These smart adaptations help save water and in turn save the homeowner money on their water bill.

With the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic keeping more Americans at home, the American Heart Association (AHA), the leading voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health for all, is embracing the new normal and moving it’s iconic Long Island Heart Walk into a week-long digital experience. The Long Island Heart Walk is a fun and meaningful way to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, raise lifesaving funds and encourage physical activity. “Now, more than ever, we’re all looking for ways to connect with others, stay active and stay encouraged,” said Randy DeYulio, Managing Partner Deloitte & Touche LLP and Chair of the 2020 Long Island Heart Walk Digital Experience. “Our week-long digital experience allows everyone to continue to have fun and support our lifesaving mission, while adapting to spending more time at home. 5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement
1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.
When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that historic Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will continue to offer ‘virtual field trips’ for classes for many schools in the area to continue to highlight the stories of resiliency during the Revolutionary War from Robert Townsend and his compatriots as members of George Washington’s spy ring. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Raynham Hall Museum has presented more than 100 virtual programs, and reached over 3,000 students across Long Island. Supervisor Saladino said, “Oyster Bay Hamlet’s history is chock full of historical importance that many of our younger residents may not be aware of, and that is
why I am so delighted to see that Raynham Hall Museum has found a creative solution in virtual field trips to still be able to fulfill their important mission to preserve our history and educate our children on the past. Virtual field trips will be held throughout the school year and will serve as an important educational supplement as faculty and students alike adapt to the ‘new normal’ we all find ourselves in!” Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay is currently offering virtual field trips for $4 per student for each program, with no more than 2 classes per virtual program. Virtual field trips have become a proven commodity to help ease educators burden coping with new distance learning options. The program is available to
libraries as well, and is designed for youngsters from grades 2-11. The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation. Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down. Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeowners to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement. • Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. However, many industry professionals now install gutters with hanger brackets. Why the change? Spikes loosen over time, leading to the gutters hanging off the home. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. Spalling is the wearing

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently honored Juliana Terian with the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Leadership Award in recognition of her achievements that have inspired countless women. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were influential leaders who made a true difference. As President and CEO of the Long Island-based Rallye Motor Company, Juliana Terian is a successful leader in her
industry as she manages an 600-employee company that has consistently ranked among the top dealerships in the tristate region, as well as the nation.” Juliana Terian took the reins as President and CEO in 2002. As anyone can imagine, this was no easy feat, as she navigated through what many would consider to be a non-traditional role. But Juliana found the balance. She worked tirelessly to
overcome all obstacles. She took the legacy left behind by her husband and she built on that legacy – putting her own stamp on it and paving her own way. She set on a mission, and she has been directing this company to new heights – showing women everywhere that even in what many would consider a nonconventional role, if you want to get it done right, you put a woman in charge.
An architect by training, she has put her background to good use when it comes to designing new facilities, including one dealership that was made completely environmentally-friendly. In fact, she makes environmental initiatives a priority in planning facilities and encourages designers and architects to always look for sustainable ways to protect Mother Nature. As she continued to grow the business, she
